Like others said: It's a combination of Metal Slug + Metroidvania. Has that ol' SNES feel. Sure the pixel art is great, but the music is where it's at.

Was pleasantly surprised at how this game combines Minecraft, Terraria, and Stardew Valley. Highly recommended!

Definitely gotta check this one out if you like Metroid style games and puzzles (the puzzles are not that hard), but it feels like so much effort and little details went into this game that you probably won't regret your purchase.

Early Access Review
I wanted to like this game.. But perhaps it just isn't ready yet. I wanted a decent Multiplayer experience with my friend, and upon seeing the 'mostly positive' score and reviews, I thought it would be at least a decent experience.. But what we found was..

[Location]
You start randomly in the map.. You don't even know where your friend is, so you spend a very long time trying to find each other by saying "let's meet at the edge of the map" (by a given direction).

[Enemies]
Wolves take you down in 2 hits. So even starting with an axe, they are fast, and attack you and you're done. Now you're in a new random place and see a death marker on the map, and that wolf has levelled up.. You can't level up btw. Even on easy there are way too many wolves and bears around! I'm always hearing that 'growl' sound when you get near one and hey look at that, gotta change direction because they'll take me down before I can even get a couple hits in with the axe. Yes, it takes many hits.

[Gun Damage]
Even with the gun, my friend unloaded quite a few bullets on a wolf and barely even made a dent in it's health.. In real life you shoot a wolf I'm pretty sure it's either down, or running away limping real fast.

[Getting Damaged]
If you managed to survive a wolf, you probably have what I can guess is rabies (poisoned?). So your stamina doesn't refill past 59, and your hp stays at 59? My char died from a wolf attack got poisoned, and since there's a bug my next char even had the poison!

[Food]
Since there is no real food around (can only get berries and such from randomly spawned crates around the map which are also hard to find), you try to set up a trap it also needs bait! Which you'd have to be lucky to find in a crate and not have eaten it because your character would probably be starving at that point, or dying of 'malnutrition' because you need fruits/veggies, meat, and water.

[Items]
The only way to find scraps and other items is to look around to find those random bags / crates that probably only have nails in them, with the odd electronic.

*** Recommendations to the Developer ***

+ Have a steady upgrade path at the beginning: You have a checklist, but currently it takes way too long to build something by having to randomly find something first. You shouldn't have to rely on random mechanics to pave your way to the initial milestone, especially when there's many threats around you that can take you down way faster and easier than you could take them down.
+ More food: Your main concern at the beginning shouldn't be food. Any person can survive many many days with just water alone, and wouldn't die of malnutrition. Berries on bushes, apples in trees.
+ Start co-op players beside each other: My friend and I spent wayyyy too long trying to go up to a fence to try and locate each other by the extreme directions of the map.. You should be able to at least see your friend's marker in a co-op game, and have a separate game if you want 'PvP', or at least register a friend/party at the beginning then be able to see them.
+ With an axe, a person could take down a wolf quite easily.. If I were in real life with an animal and I had an axe, it would be trying to bite at my leg, but a few good swings I could take down the wolf (the problem is when wolves are in packs). With a gun? A single bullet should either kill it or send it running.
+ Mini-map: This would be very handy too.
+ Important foliage excluded in draw distance: I have a pretty low end PC, so I need the draw distance the lowest, but it makes it very difficult to find fibers as they pop up quite suddenly. Please at least put a priority on fibers so they'll render farther away, and everything else limited to the draw distance.

This game is actually really good! I was quite surprised. It's fun, and reminds me of the ol' castlevania games! It's designed to feel like a NES game, down to some emulated flickering graphics just like a NES game! (like the water in one area)

Wow.. Much wow. If you love 16-bit style RPG's you will love this.. But so much polish, animation, awesome smooth controls, real-time combat..
