Early Access Review
So the basic rundown is this: everybody is dead, and you are a machine fueled by blood. You descend deeper into Christian Hell as you beat levels. Pretty simple premise.

Skip the spoilers if you want to find out about your arsenal ingame. Currently, the game has 4 weapons: the revolver, shotgun, nailgun, and the railgun. Each weapon has two alternate-fire modes (at this time).

The revolver has a charge beam, and also a coinflip alternate fire. With the coinflip, you can shoot or punch the coin for it to deal damage to enemies' weakspots, such as their head. If you fire a shot at the coin at the apex of its curve, your shots will split into two. If you're cool enough, you can actually switch to the railgun during the coinflip and shoot the coin, splitting the railgun beam into two beams.

The shotgun has a grenade launcher that you can charge, or a "pump" mode, with each pump increasing the damage of your next shot, but decreasing accuracy (increasing spread). However, if you overpump the shotgun, it will explode on the next shot, dealing damage to both you and the enemy. You can actually use the like a rocket jump, it's pretty neat.

The nailgun is a minigun that fires nails. It has a magnetize alt-fire, and a burst alt fire. The magnetize alt-fire will immediately pull nails fired from the nailgun towards it, including ones stuck to enemies. You can pull enemies into shredders or crushers this way. You can also have multiple magnets stuck in different places, causing the nails to orbit back and forth between magnets. However, keep in mind that the nails can't damage another enemy if they're stuck in one already. The burst fire lets you, as its name implies, release an ungodly amount of nails in a short span of time. Big damage.

Finally, the railgun. This weapon is meant to be used in conjunction with your other weapons, since it has an incredibly high wind-up time after you fire it, since it does so much damage. This one has THREE alt-fires. The first is your standard rail cannon, big damage, big piercing, yadda yadda. The second alt-fire is a drill that does large damage on initial hit, then does damage over time. The third is an instant explosion at your reticle.

So why did I spend this much time explaining how your arsenal works? Because the gunplay in this game is so satisfying and simple, I can remember exactly what the guns do without even having to look at the game. Everything you do in this game feels incredible. The sounds and the impact of shooting make you feel like you're a bulldozer barreling through a building. This game has a ton of mobility to dodge anything thrown at you. You can strafe mid-air, you can wall jump, you can ground slam, and you can slide around. Combined with the extra skill test of "style" (extra points for being cool), such as shooting enemies while in the air, or parrying projectiles with your punch, this game makes you feel amazing. It gives you a ton of options to avoid dying, so when you see the death screen, you understand that it was YOU who ♥♥♥♥♥♥ up, not the game. It's not frustrating whatsoever. Killing stuff hasn't been this fun in ages. Dying is even a blessing, since you know you get to obliterate the enemies in the room again once you restart. Please, PLEASE buy this game. You will not regret this decision.

PS: This game is currently in Early Access. If that turns you off, that's fine. Just know that the game already beats out many AAA games in terms of fun even before it's complete. I am more than happy to part with my money, even when the game isn't finished yet. When this game fully releases, I am absolutely certain it will be a masterpiece.

PoE is a black hole. At first, if you're far away enough from the core concepts, you will feel little to no pull. However, sometimes you might come back to the black hole to investigate what the fuss is all about. You might try and quit dozens of times, like I did, just to figure out the hype and see if it clicks. You might make inklings of progress: I didn't beat the campaign until my fourth character, and with plenty of deaths (due to flicker strike combined with my then incompetency).

But suddenly, as you approach, you'll reach the event horizon, the point of no return. If you continue on, the game will have dug its hooks in you like Pinhead from Hellraiser, you will never turn back, the game's pull will be too strong for you to look at another ARPG the same way again.

PoE is incredible because of its variety. I don't mean just the builds, but the massive array of endgame content. If you like certain content, you can focus it. If you don't like it, you can ignore it or possibly even actively avoid it using the atlas tree. It has no shortage of dopamine rushes either; one good drop, one good craft, one good gamble, and your day or even week has been made. Sure, the game has its ups and downs (3.15, 3.19, and 3.21 for me), but ultimately, like climate change, the line trends up and up.

If at first you don't like the game, come back to it in the next league, the next year, hell, maybe even when PoE 2 comes out. Maybe one of these times, something will click, and you'll understand the allure. But at the very least, please give the game a chance. I promise you won't regret it.

Man oh man do I love this game. Although it appears I don't have much time on this game (I had to leave it open for five minutes so that I could make this review, I have been using the client "Forged Alliance Forever," a fan-made client for Forged Alliance multiplayer, that I highly suggest you download and play through in case you want to enjoy this game to the fullest. Unfortunately, FAF doesn't display on Steam when you've launched the program. (It does now!!) This client comes with balance patches made lovingly by fans of the game for fans of the game, continuing even after the difficult death of Gas Powered Games, which resulted in the multiplayer dying, which is where FAF picks up. (The Steam version and FAF are different games entirely, allowing you to play either one. FAF just legally requires you to own a copy of the game so that you may play FAF.) Although I might be a newcomer to this game (around 30-50 hours), I can assure my love for this game is genuine and with good reason.

This game is incredibly difficult for newcomers, with a large skill floor and an even higher skill ceiling, which Supreme Commander 2 decided to fix by lowering the skill ceiling entirely, removing much of the complexity of the game; not to mention the fact that the game itself was made with consoles in mind, which was a result of a port to the Xbox melting the machine from the performance. So what makes it difficult?

People who know how to play this game will dumpster you. Completely and absolutely, no matter how good your talent for RTS is. You will learn from your mistakes, and have to tutor yourself in order to get better at the game. The variety of strategy and maps absolutely astounds me for a game that is one and a half decades old. You are your own greatest enemy when you are a newcomer. If you mess up your economy early, more proficient players will easily take advantage of the time and resources you have wasted to mount an attack and absolutely massacre you. Economy is no laughing matter, and very heavily punishing if not managed correctly. Stalling should be avoided in almost all cases, because the build times grow exponentially larger as you have less and less resources to put into build orders, which leads to a cascade effect on your economy; you lose time, which means you lose resources, losing you your ability to expand your economy, losing resources which you could've gained if you hadn't stalled, and the cycle repeats itself. I cannot stress enough how important your start is in this game.

In addition to economy being very difficult to manage for newcomers in this game, strategy is also key and difficult to learn. Of course, there are many rush and heavy offensive strategies, but how about defense? As a newcomer, the most likely tactic to pick would be to hunker down and turtle, using strong point-defense, anti-air, and shields to stop enemy fire. If this strategy, the so-called "You-Shall-Not-Pass" defense is employed, I can 100% guarantee that you will lose, spectacularly. Not only are your protections stagnant and not moving, allowing for an easy target, but point defenses and anti-air can be easily countered through ranged artillery, high health units, and/or experimentals. They do not move, and are sitting ducks for any kind of counterplay. Your utmost priority when it comes to defense is simply to create better units. This game is a shining example of "Offense is the best defense." How is a newcomer supposed to know that one of the main strategies for one faction is to do nothing but bolster resource generation so that they may rush a T3 Assault Bot? Just like any other game, you don't learn strategies by just intuition, you have to learn the meta of the game so that you know what to do and what your opponent is going to do.

So now that you've read through why this game is so difficult for newcomers, you might be asking, "Okay, so why do you like this game so much?" For starters, this game is so difficult for newcomers because it is there are so many options and strategies. The game is so open-ended that it makes it compelling to learn. It tells you, "So you think you're hot stuff huh? Alright, let me just drop a textbook on you about the strategy in this game, so daunting that it might turn you away." That might sound pretty awful, but learning is part of the fun when it comes to Forged Alliance. When you do well in this game, you feel like an absolute genius. When you do good in this game, you know that it wasn't luck (mostly), but pure skill on your end, you are absolutely sure that you did something right. When you can counter the opponent and end their ACU, the death nuke is just so absolutely satisfying. This game isn't for everybody, just like RTS isn't for everybody.

My two gripes with this game is the learning curve and the other being my own fear that there will never be another RTS that will ever top this. Those in itself isn't so bad, though. I enjoy the fact that I actually have to learn about the game in a deeper sense to understand how to win. Oh, and also, on a smaller note, the AI isn't very good. The best way to practice is against other players, which might seem daunting, given that I just told you that older players will steamroll you, but there are many helpful, active players in the community, and also videos and guides to help you along the way.

Good luck, Commander, and don't power stall.

For those who read or have experienced losing their save due to killing Xeno'Jiiva, from Reddit:

There is no Xeno save corruption bug.

We can all stop posting about this and please go into your negative reviews mentioning this and remove it.

There is no save corruption bug from the final boss. It is now confirmed.

The issue is somehow the PC's affected by the "bug" are missing required standard codecs to play the cutscene.

Once the game autosaves after the boss has been defeated, it attempts to load the cutscene and crashes.

The autosave's next call is to load that cutscene, so it appears "corrupted" when you load because your game will crash.

This can be tested by viewing the palico tool video's in your house. If you have a "corrupted save" from the xeno fight, you will crash when viewing the palico tool videos.

If you crash, you are missing or have corrupted codecs.

You need to download and install this:

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/mediafeaturepack

or

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/p/web-media-extensions/9n5tdp8vcmhs?activetab=pivot:overviewtab

Apparently windows 7 gets pointed to this version. It lists different versions of XP as the required type so mileage may vary. Including it up here as u/zAmplifyyy passed it along below :

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=16546

*update* From u/BellerophonM and u/eihen below

Not all editions of windows ship with these codecs (N and KN), which marks them as optional and requiring handling if absent.

Euro bro's with the issue or anyone in Korea apparently with a N or KN version of the OS is not technically equipped to run MHW. You need to install the media packs.

If you are affected by this lack of codec's, Please update them using the above links.

If anyone finds any better links, feel free to share them or DM me and I'll add them above.

And please, for everyone's sake, the developers, and the overall health and wellness of the game and the related Subs:

Stop. Perpetuating. A. Falsehood.
