CS:GO Review
The core gameplay of this game is absolutely amazing.

I see a lot of people with thousands of hours in games like LoL or Overwatch constantly complaining about how much the game pisses them off. Often these people seem to only play due to addiction and not because they truly enjoy the core gameplay. Not to say that this isn't true for some people for CS:GO, but I see a lot less of that in CS:GO than other competitive games.

Most people I see with lots of time in those games regret their time spent, and often they don't know why they even still play. Personally, I have a ridiculous amount of hours on CS:GO (some afk of course), and I don't regret spending any of them. This game is really, really fun, and I think it stacks up very well to other competitive games in this regard.

That being said, CS:GO has a lot of problems that some other competitive games don't have:

  • Probably the most cheaters of any competitive game you will play (never played PUBG, that game could have more cheaters). If you play for a while, or even buy a third-party subscription service, you can end up seeing almost no cheaters (or at least almost no one you can tell is cheating), but it's a definite flaw in the game, especially for new players, and especially in comparison to a lot of other competitive games who have that issue more controlled

  • It's especially difficult to get into for new players. This is partially because of the cheaters problem above, but it's also because the game modes outside of competitive are very different than competitive and aren't as fun, and if you try to immediately hop into competitive as someone new to FPS you might get destroyed even in silver. It would be easier to get into a game like Valorant, for example, with the downside being ultimately less interesting gameplay (in my opinion)

  • Communication is pretty critical in this game, which means you often get stuck with angry teenagers and such in voice comms and leaving makes the game much more difficult

If you can get past these flaws, you'll find a consistently fun game for thousands of hours, especially to play with friends. This game also has one of the most interesting eSports scenes to follow, if that's the sort of thing you're into.

In 2014, when this game was just a kickstarter idea based on a comic strip, OMOCAT (the person) said the following:

Originally posted by OMOCAT:
"Having gone through art school, I’ve always felt that games were viewed as money-making products instead of art; but just because it is commercial doesn’t mean that it’s not good: in fact, I would argue the exact opposite. Games do everything that art is supposed to do and beyond. It mixes visuals, writing, music and sound, storytelling, and interaction and puts it all in one package. Games are so successful at what it does that there is a whole culture (and then cultures within cultures) based on them. As creating games becomes easier in the future, I want to get across the idea that game-making is an art medium. I am creating an art piece called OMORI and my medium is a video game. This game is going to be about my expression, and with the help of the OMORI team, it will become realized. I can’t wait to show you all the final result of our labor of love."

OMOCAT set out to make a piece of art, and she succeeded.

OMORI is one of the best games I've ever played. It is worth buying if you like any kind of RPG or story-driven game. The story, gameplay mechanics, atmosphere, music, art style, and characters are all phenomenal.

The review system of Steam can sometimes leave a bit to be desired in its all-or-nothing nature. People will click recommend if the game is "good enough," which can lead to many decidedly mediocre games having good looking reviews. This is not one of those games.

If this style of game is even remotely in your area of interest, I strongly recommend trying out OMORI.
