This game made me feel such raw emotions – throughout my playthrough of the main story I felt the fear, grief and anger that our characters go through. The structure of this game is well thought out, with the perspective shifts allowing you to sympathise with everyone and their motivations. When Ellie becomes filled with rage and beats someone to death, you hear the ringing in your ears, feel the vibration in your controller, and see the red tinge of the screen fill your vision. The distinguishing decision made when writing the game was making Abby, the initial antagonist, act as a mirror for Ellie. By the end of the game, you understand exactly why Abby chooses to act the way she does.

In between my sessions, I felt really down, and I couldn’t stop thinking about the game. Initially, I thought that the gloomy atmosphere of the game was getting to me. It wasn’t until towards the end that I realised why I felt this way – I loved these characters, I’ve known them since I was a teen, and it hurt me to see them suffer. I hated Abby for what she had done to Ellie, but when I played through the same three days from her perspective, I hated myself for what I had done to her as Ellie. I was heartbroken when Ellie called Dina a burden, and when she left Dina and JJ. It was so painful for me to fight Ellie as Abby, and Abby as Ellie – I wanted to pause the game and stop either of them from getting hurt. But this dissonance is exactly what the game wants you to feel. It wants you to understand the blinding nature of hate. To work through the same emotions that you felt earlier on during the game. To learn to let go and forgive, as Ellie and Abby do.

In the best way possible, this game is like watching a car crash in slow motion. That being said, while the story of the game is undoubtedly tragic, the ending is hopeful, at least to me. Maybe somewhere out there, our characters have found peace and will be able to move on. Maybe, Ellie learns to cope with her past, and finds reconciliation with Dina and JJ. And just maybe, if there’s hope for them, there’s hope for us all.

You get to absolutely decimate the environment, and exterminate the local wildlife.
Great modding support, and some of the best gameplay I've ever experienced.

The factory must grow. Be careful not to let it consume your life too.
