Adorable, super short little FMV-game love letter to indie action cinema. This had to have been so fun to make.

Great little point-and-click mystery/puzzle game. I see a lot of reviews complaining about the clunkiness of the UI, but I think that's the point. It felt immersive. If you enjoy a good mystery, thought early Homestuck was hilarious, are fascinated by vintage software design, and spent a lot of time growing up in niche online communities, then this is for you.

Didn't expect to be crying over a fictional nu-metal kid from the turn of the millennium tonight but here we are.

Early Access Review
Really fun little fantasy action-RPG, with beautiful world and character design. It's definitely kind of just a casual dungeon-grind game, but I like those, so I'm more than pleased. Skill scrolls and weapons mastery skills bring pleasant variety in character builds to the game; for example, I have a mystic who uses a sword/bell combination, and am experimenting with a classless character.

You can play singleplayer, but it's very fun in multiplayer, too. The community is astoundingly friendly and cooperative; don't be intimidated by the handful of servers with horny titles. Or the "suggestive content" warning, for that matter; there's honestly not much, unless being able to make your character chubby or give them big boobies is 2scary4u. I host multiplayer from time to time, and everyone I've met has been so kind and welcoming; if you're shy to talk on multiplayer games, you don't have to be, on here. Everyone's got a good sense of humor, everyone is a good sport, nobody bites the newbies, and people generally know how to handle the trolls.

The character customization is super fun. Lots of cute haircuts and ear/horn options with every race; eyes are different between them too, so you feel encouraged to check everything out. While the body sliders definitely look better on some races than others, I'm honestly really grateful for them; most of mine are all kind of low, but it helps make every player you encounter look truly unique. Also, you can make your character left-handed!! I haven't seen many other MMOs with that option.

It's an incredibly fun game already, and feels pretty complete despite there being far more to come. I feel silly singing the praises of a game that everyone else already has, but good god, if there is a game that deserves it, it's this one. Kiseff is an amazingly talented individual, with incredible taste in video games.

I wish Steam had a neutral button. I don't want to give it a "not recommended" but I wouldn't particularly recommend it unless you've played the original and are a superfan.

To put it bluntly: despite being made for an improved engine, it feels less polished than the original game. Some of the new touches are cute, like the stool from the yellow area, or the newspaper girl in the white area, but other changes feel weaker than the original puzzles. For what it's worth, I think some of it is to reduce difficulty for new players, which is fine.

I think the real issue comes with the visuals. Some of the new sprites are beautiful. Some of the new portraits are stiff as hell. Ib's dad looks very weird, though I'll admit that no one would probably notice unless they played the original game as much as I did. The new lighting is acceptable in the gallery, but it looks downright terrible in the sketchbook; the original sketchbook area is neon crayon art, that's the point. The new lighting system does not match the design at all. It should be bright, it should clash.

Despite everything, I think I'm marking this as recommended. I still had fun, it's still the game I knew and loved, even if I do think the original version is still better. I appreciate all of the new dialogue between the characters a lot, even if it is just padding. This is effectively a donation button for fans of the original game, with a cute little remake attached.

I probably have like 200+ hours for this game off of Steam. The Phantasmagoria games have always been some of my favorite installments in this series and still hold up even now. If you're looking to get into Touhou, PoFV is a great starting point, being probably the easiest installment in the series.

Here's to hoping Perfect Cherry Blossom will be released on Steam someday
