Probably the most heartbreaking review I will ever write:

Overall Subnautica: Below Zero (BZ) is a decent game. Unfortunately, I can't rate it without comparing it to the original Subnautica. And in comparison, BZ is worse than the original in every aspect.

Pros:
  • It's still a nice exploration game,
  • the design of alien flora and fauna is still awesome.

Cons:
  • The world is rather small,
  • the world feels empty,
  • the sea truck falls short compared to the seamoth,
  • the gameplay on land feels clunky, (why does the game in huge parts take place on land? It's called subnautica!)
  • the overall atmosphere is not as intense as in the original game, (mostly because you aren't alone on the planet, hear many voicelogs and your character can speak)
  • overall there isn't much development compared to the original game.

Do not get me wrong, I love Subnautica. But I think everyone would agree if I say: We had different expectations for BZ. Overall it feels more like a DLC rather than a standalone game. In my honest opinion, in it's current state it is not worth 30 โ‚ฌ.

Let us all hope Unknown Worlds will make a sequel worthy of being called Subnautica.
