Update: 11 months later.
There are a ton of awesome mods. The game - for me - is already 100% what I would ever need. Asset editor is still missing, but they've found ways to add lots of assets and props to the game so that isn't really a problem anymore (unless you want to seriously deep dive into asset heavy gameplay - like traditional japanese houses etc. - but that's beside the point).
With the new free creator assets it's easy to create very diverse cities.


Much better than the original as a vanilla experience. The AI is much better, but needs improvement. It's at times hard to notice but the graphics have improved a lot as well, in a weird way. Looks very samey until you spot the differences.

They've made lots of improvements with the patches but there's still more to do. Eagerly waiting.
Mine's running fine at about 100k population at the time of writing.
edit: My first city was about 300k and started to slow down, but it has a lot to do with how you build your city.
