The game itself was promising, but budget cuts and a rushed development delivered an unfinished product, ridled with bugs. Thankfully, the Silent Hunter franchise has a long standing community, that transformed the game to something closer to what it should've been. I've played it very little without mods, and would advise against it, the vanilla game is playable but not to the same extent of enjoyability provided by mods. I personally use TWOS, sprinkled with a few other mods, and get a solid experience with an occasional bug here and there. This game is old, and it shows, but honestly i still think the graphics hold up. Don't buy expecting some super fancy simulator, nor a super laid back arcady "kill em all" style game.
If you are aware of the problems and familliar with modding, i'd recommend picking it up especially when on sale, as long as you're willing to go up the learning curve, especially if you're totally new to the genre. Regarding the ubisoft problems, i've been playing with no issues, but i use a modded version, so that might be the reason, since steam doesn't even log my gameplay hours (wayy more than 3).

It's a full plate for Alien fans.
It follows the original Alien (1979) feeling and creative line, capturing the universe perfectly while creating it's own unique setting. The art department has done an outstanding work on this, CA really stood up for it's name.
In terms of immersion it is undoubtedly unmatched, the audio and graphics provide an thrilling experience.
I love the gameplay mechanics, the AI really takes a huge place here, and it really does a good job on terrifying players (props to the programmers).
The anti aliasing that comes with the game lacks a bit but that's easily fixed with user created content that provides flawless AA.
While it loses a bit of replayability value over time because of the story repeating itself, the experience is never the same, plus there's the survivor mode that pits you in a survival challange against big chap's brother and the clock.
Overall a great experience, a nice story to it and a great treat to Alien fans.
Highly recommend, but i must say that it's necessary to watch the original movie in order to achieve a better experience.
