Yes, I played Civ 4 Gold and really liked it. However, I found that I really like this game too. Enough, ironically, that I try not to play it since I can easily focus on it to the exclusion of the stuff that I am supposed to be focused on. I did that with Alpha Centauri. So tempted to play a game right now.

I have only played a little bit. However, I really liked the characters and the innovative gameplay. The intro is absolutely hilarious. I watched it multiple times, it is so good. So far, I am not very good at the game. However, the characters make me want to play.
