It's Half-Life 2. But it looks moderately worse. Sacrifices that Source engine forward rendered visual clarity for blurry TAA / upscaling madness. For what benefit? I don't know, it's about on par visually with a game from 2004.

But oh, it DOES do something. It runs exponentially worse. Which I'd typically be fine with, if the game actually looked good. Which it doesn't.

Then you get to the actual game, where they've somehow managed to just make the feel of everything worse. Your shotgun doesn't cycle like it should. Enemies hit with the Gravity Gun (or any physics object) don't fly in a satisfying way. Physics objects don't get thrown with enough force. And wow those new sounds are bad!

Some guy wrote good code for the player movement 5 - 7 years ago and it's just about the only thing that feels like Half Life 2 at this point. The rest is a mockery. Like a what if scenario with the stated goal of "what if Half Life 2 was worse in just about every way?"

This is the perfect 5/10 game. It has some aspects it does well (story, cutscenes) and some aspects it falters on really hard (gameplay, progression, still the story)

It passes that "good enough" threshold for me. If you're expecting a worthy continuation to the Arkham series, you'll be disappointed. But you can do much, much worse for $5.

Do not under any circumstances try to grind out the endgame.

Early Access Review
It's a little ways off from being ready for full games, but it's astonishing in the ways this engine matches and even surpasses RPG Maker in its power.

Anyone who has made a maker project has been there. You start making your game, and start running into limitations. Maybe you want to change the UI. Maybe you don't like tile movement. Whereas a decent engine would allow you to change this yourself, the RPG Maker experience is stacking plugins upon plugins to do the simplest things. God help you if you want a custom UI, for you'll have to delve into the engine's bare javascript to render a square.

The contrast when moving over to RPGA is immense. Want to turn off tile movement? Sure. Want custom UIs that display literally anything? Of Course. Want to make a 3D first person shooter with your own custom character controller? Okay, you kinda can't. But you can get 75% of the way there. And that's what's so impressive.

In all the ways RPG Maker is limited, RPGA is free. But it's not perfect.

If you're not an experienced user of RPG Maker, this isn't particularly user friendly. All the stuff that's done for you by default has to be remade almost from scratch. UIs in particular would be overwhelming for a beginner. But this is for a good reason.

Things are still in very active development, updates are pushed constantly. New features come semi frequently. It's good to have support, but it's very hard currently to learn a consistent workflow when you're given new and better ways to accomplish tasks.

A good example of this is the implementation of 3D models. I'm making a 3D game and want heavy use of models... but models lack a lot of features. They don't have true collision meshes. There aren't actual materials in engine. So should I make things at a lower spec, or wait until support improves? Does the developer even think the engine is right for truly full 3D games?

In that way I'd say you should hold off from purchasing this if you want to make a game right here and right now. It's not ready for that at all, as I said at the start of this review. But if you want to get in early and support the best competitor to RPG maker that will ever exist? There isn't a better time than now.
