Don't let the resemblance to your typical high school-romance anime fool you: CLANNAD has a surprisingly literary bent to it that reassembles the genre's tropes into something transcendent. Each route is itself a tightly written, layered story with immense emotional payoff, and the recurrent themes, situations and symbols spread among them lend this 80-hour, branching narrative a remarkable coherence. All these threads culminate in the gorgeous After Story, a deeply moving coming-of-age story shot through with an unblinking, compassionate spirit. Subtly yet emotionally written and impeccably voice acted, CLANNAD left a deep impression on me, and I cannot recommend it enough.
