This is retro bliss. It feels distinctly like a NES title, but it's updated with modern game design philosophies abound.
It's just crazy fun. I don't even want to say any anything else, lest I spoil some part of the experience.
Do you like Megaman? Or Ducktales? Or Mario? Or platformers in general? Or videogames? Then you'd probably enjoy Shovel Knight.

All hail the Troupple King!

This is an amazingly designed game. If you like roguelikes and/or pixel shooters, stop reading and buy this game.
Risk of Rain is so, so well designed. The game feels organic, being completely foreign and impossibly difficult when you start playing, but becoming more familiar and easier as the game goes on; but not by virtue of leveling up or any kind of avatar strength. Instead, the player becomes more familiar with the level layouts, the monsters, the items, the bosses, and the characters themselves as they play, gaining a sense of skill along the way.
This is the way roguelikes should feel. Hostile, mysterious, and dangerous. But as you die and die and die, you learn and grow as a player, carving a much easier path for yourself through the game.
Not to mention that the art and music here are both top-notch and unique. If you're a fan of the pixel aesthetic, you'll love the look of the strange alien world.
It's a no-brainer. Highly recommended. You gotta play this.

Do you like adventure games in any capacity? Do you enjoy zombie fiction or the Walking Dead TV show? Do you like your games to tear your heart out in the very best way? Then you have to play this game.

Telltale games have created a love-letter to the genre in this unbelivable action title. Go in knowing as little as possible and forgo walkthroughs; you won't ever need one. The game is well designed enough that anyone can jump into this game and figure it out.

This is an emotionally draining game, but my god, is it ever rewarding. It might even change the way you think about some things.

Like La-Mulana, I like this game, and I think it's very well designed for the most part, but I can't recommend it to most people. While it is a short and simple puzzle platformer, its themes are very bleak, and it relishes in having the player repeat their mistakes over and over again; which could very well be a theme of the game. But themes don't make a game playable; and as an overall experience LIMBO is lacking.

It's also got a nihilistic, expected ending. It's called LIMBO. What did you think was going to happen in this darker than black game?

I can't say it'll be a fun experience for all, but if you like puzzle platformers or are a devotee of Nietzsche, give it a shot.

I think I'm the only zombie fan in the world who can't get behind the Left 4 Dead games. I can't stand the gameplay and the frenetic action aspect of it. It's twitch gaming taken to the extreme, combined with forced social interaction with twits online, who can screw over anything you're trying to do, and will.

If you're going to play this, for the love of Pete, please do so with people you know. Pubbing this game is brutal.

I like this game... but I don't think I can recommend it to most people. It's the most obtuse, intentionally confusing, and ruthless pixel adventure game I've played, and I've played a lot of them. That being said, the art and music are gorgeous and the design feels old-school in all the right ways.

But when I've got to spend hours just trying to figure out how to end the second level, before finally succumbing to a walkthrough and STILL being lost, that's just bad design. There's nintendo hard, and then apparently there's MSX hard.

If you're a hardcore gamer who likes platformers and has already beaten Cave Story, I'd suggest it. But to anyone else, I'd say wait until the sequel.

One of my favorite games.
Everyone should play this ingenious experience.
It's beautiful, awe-inspring, creative, fun, and thought-provoking.

I can't say this game has aged well. It still feels like a Fallout experience, but it's very clunky, very early game design. Getting around is a chore and the graphics look like mud, which is appropriate for the setting, but it's visually muddy and low-res.

If a remake of this game was created in Fallout 2's engine it would probably be wonderful. This was a game-changer when it was released; but it's hard to play in 2014 without getting a little bit frustrated.

Play this game with the lights off and your headphones cranked and you'll have an amazing time. I'd recommend turning off the death moans in the options, though... that can get a bit annoying during the game's more difficult sections.

I used to love this game when I was a little kid. DOOM, Wolfenstein 3D, Blake Stone and crew were the original PC powerhouses for me; but this game blew them all out of the water when it came out. I used to love it for the silly humor, sexy girl sprites, and realistic (for the time) level design, but playing it again as an adult proves that not only is this game still funny, but that it actually holds up well gameplay-wise. This is a very, very well designed game with a crude facade around it.

The expansions, however... well, The Birth is still very good, feeling just like a continuation of the main game, albeit with slightly shoddier design. The other three expansions fall flat, as they favored realism over playability in their level design; resulting in disastrous stages like the gigantic, confusing Smithsonian in "Duke It Out In D.C.", in which after hours searching for key cards in the life-size museum, I had to give up.

That being said, it's worth picking up the atomic edition to play the first four episodes, and to laugh at the absurdity and scale of the DLC. Duke's core game has aged really well, and it holds up even to modern shooters because it's so well designed.
