Early Access Review
I am a player of the OG NMRIH and decided to play it for the free weekend. here are my thoughts on the game. TLDR: the mixed review is deserved. It is NOT worth full price, but I really hope it ends up being so. I am giving a positive review over a negative review because I want to like it and want it to succeed.

Pros
Atmosphere. The game looks, feels, and sounds pretty gritty just like the OG. the maps look good and the dialogue isn't cringe which i was worried about. At the second stage of infection you start hearing whisper to krill yourself and not trust your friends which was pretty freaky. The game has good atmosphere.

Gameplay. Honestly the game is fun. Seems to have a nice gameplay loop. Feels very similar to the old NMRIH, with some added bonuses. Movement is still slow and heavy (good). Stamina runs out quickly and running out of the stamina to sprint after fighting zombies will get you graped.. Characters have a system where you can upgrade them by successfully extracting, but you lose them if you die. Similar to Hunt: Showdown. Albeit a bit barebones, it does make me try harder to win the round as to not lose my perked-up character. Live-customizing your weapon with scopes and grips and such you find around the map is cool too. Often does this game recapture the moments of panic and chaos of realizing you're in a bad position and are getting closed in by zombies with not enough resources to escape, or frantically rummaging through shelves for infection pills.

Cons
Optimization. Game struggles to hit 60fps on a 2080 super, even getting as low as 30fps. Honestly just runs bad. Not much else to it. I think I averaged like 45 FPS.

Polish. Game is very unpolished and you can feel it. Way too often do zombies simply tank a heavy swing shovel to the head and attack you anyway or straight up just keep walking normally. Ammo and med crates sometimes have an item that can't be grabbed. Movement feels real jank at times, especially with the vaulting. Zombie ragdolls are sometimes comically bad.

Lack of content. The game has three maps, and although large and with different (similar) objectives depending on your match, there is not much else. Will likely start feeling repetitive after a dozen hours if not less. Needs more maps and more variety of mission types.

my fortress champion, "Holewrecker McBigbicep the Axe Lord", trekked 3 days on foot in order to solo genocide an entire goblin village, walked back, got sloshed on mushroom booze, tore the arms off a small child having a schizophrenic breakdown, ♥♥♥♥♥♥ his wife, and passed out on the floor feeling satisfied. gigachad.

Free, easy, grindable. Not a bad time sink game at all.
