Although I might just be nostalgia tripping, it felt like Battle for Bikini Bottom played better, while this one was a better crafted experience.

Gameplaywise, they removed a lot of player agency, Spongebob only has 4 moves in this game (2 of them variants of a ground pound, and 1 is a parachuting mechanic, so really it's 2 attacks) versus the 5 in BFBB that don't rely on objects placed within the map outside of the player. While the levels were crafted in a fun way, it still definitely feels like a step down from its predecessor, but I guess lowering player agency scales with how much life they can give to the world.

And the show references were definitely on point, it seemed like there was always a reference I was noticing between the environment art, the voice lines, and the skins. Was very impressed the amount of care that obviously went into this game, despite having grown up and becoming the jaded cynic that I am. A fun buy for everyone.

As a Dynasty Warriors fan having never played a previous Warriors Orochi title, it's a great game that lets me explore the other half of Koei Tecmo's alternate franchise. Great casually for a fun time, at least until you've tried all the characters you've wanted to. Swinging the game into mystical/god elements in the Orochi characters becomes a crazy trip too, until you've realized eventually that the balance between the majority of the characters is extremely out of whack. Characters like Gaia, and Magoichi are overwhelmingly powerful even with the most basic weapon element upgrades, compared to some of your previous favorites within either DW or SW series characters.

But even the balance issues pale in comparison to the ridiculous endgame grinding they've stuck in with the weapon crafting system. Once you've finished everything in Story mode, Infinite mode endgame is just grinding item materials, gems, and crystals in order to craft the Ultimate weapon for your favorite characters. Or 100 of them, if you're into achievements. With some stages in the game giving you a full hour timer, doing this must take 10x longer if you were actually playing the game the way it was originally intended (with your favorite characters, despite however weak they are). It's a ridiculous timesink for no real apparent reason, not to mention it's an entirely separate grind for golden weapon elements, as you have to do those on Pandemonium difficulty within the Story mode, and not Infinite mode.

Overall, fun, but with questionable character balance issues and a ridiculously designed endgame.

Early Access Review
My best use of 30 bucks this year so far.

Well worth the purchase per competitive interest as well as messing around with some friends. Basically it's like going on a road trip with your friends if that road trip involved guns and a magical death circle.

A solid entry into the series in terms of gameplay possibilities. The seafaring of AC3 mixed with the renovations and money system of Brotherhood. The story ends up being somewhat lackluster, and Shay's betrayal is based over the classic soap opera gig where main characters don't give each other enough time to explain everything, so it all goes to hell.

Also, I hate Shay's voice actor.

A fantastic narrative experience condensed within an hour. The story tackles on themes of parental obligation, disability, and depression and crafts them into a very real, believable experience. The ambiguity of the story overall makes it very relatable.
