good, free adaptation of the original game & crisis core alongside a new sephiroth backstory & plenty of (non-canon) side content? just don't pay for anything or play too obsessively and this is a great download!

i don't think i'd recommend getting much further into it beyond that, things seem to be very expensive for little value & even after a lot of gameplay i'm admittedly still confused about some mechanics and get lost in the menus a lot but again, but i don't feel like i need to be doing anything extra to complete any story content. definitely don't need to pay to do it, either.

if you don't want to play, it's at least worth searching up the first soldier story content & the events on youtube. writing remains a strong point as always!

easily my favorite game, arguably the best that i've played.

i'm a newcomer to the compilation of final fantasy 7, and final fantasy as a whole. i played remake on a whim a few months back from a recommendation by a friend, and i was blown away. i had never played the original because i grew up with nintendo consoles rather than playstation, and by the time i had the means it looked incredibly dated for someone who didn't have nostalgia for it. boy, i now know i was so far off the mark.

to make it quick, i've become a very big fan of the compilation of FF7 over the course of the past year. i may have started with remake, but very quickly after i rectified my mistake and made sure to consume every other piece before playing rebirth. i got a ps5 just for the game only for the PC port to be announced literally a day or two before i was finally going to be able to play.

with that background out of the way, i was incredibly hyped to play rebirth. i tried not to expect too much, as i avoided everything about it. i saw some negativity, i saw some positivity, but that was it. despite trying, i was incredibly hyped up. playing just the demo and experiencing the latest rendition we have of the nibelheim flashback, i said to a friend immediately after that there was a very big chance the full game would turn out to be one of my favorites. we reached dangerous levels of hype, ones that couldn't possibly be lived up to.

they were.

the PC port is not perfect and there were times where performance took a hit (oddly enough it was most prominent for me in VR battles- sometimes those would tank to ~50fps when i wasn't in my command menu?) but overall it ran like a dream considering how gorgeous this game is. the art style used in the remakes is easily my ideal art style. the characters look incredible, the environments look beautiful (aside from some rough pop-in) and there are so many frames that would work as perfect framed prints or desktop wallpapers. this game is absolute eye-candy through and through. (how could it not be when aerith is in it?)

gameplay wise, rebirth builds even further upon the changes to remake's combat that intermission did. perfect block & synergizing returns, with synergies being expanded upon heavily. combat feels so, so good the entire way through. the materia system, while not as broken and fun as in the original game, remains incredibly fun to play around and there are tons of ways to build. combat aside, what would ff7 be without minigames? rebirth has tons of them, and i had a great time with almost all of them. a few were frustrating at first but fun once i got the hang of them, and only one or two stick out in my mind as "why would you make this, please have mercy." i have yet to go through the harder versions of all of them for 100% completion for what it's worth. i can understand that some don't like the frequency of them and how many are required in some capacity rather than optional, but i think they're a blast and an essential part of the ff7 experience.

now for the big one. the story. without spoilers, rebirth feels very much more like a sequel than a faithful remake even if many of the same events occur. anyone who's already played remake likely understands what i mean by that. as for the changes that rebirth does make, i think they were incredible. everything feels so much more fleshed out and organic. despite taking around 8 hours of gameplay from kalm up through the forgotten capital and extending it up to around 50+ hours, i never felt like it dragged. if anything, i felt like there could've been another chapter or two, and a couple could have been longer. i understand why some people may not be the biggest fans of the changes rebirth makes, but i think they're incredible. there's so much to analyze & digest while waiting for the final part of the trilogy and i think the payoff is going to be incredible.

the voice acting is incredible and everyone gives such a phenomenal performance. i thought zack sounded a little rough in crisis core reunion, but that goes out the window in rebirth & caleb pierce is incredible. i am sorry for doubting you. the soundtrack is probably the greatest i've heard in a video game. there are so many great tracks, and they do so much justice to the original game's soundtrack.

final fantasy 7 rebirth feels like a game made out of pure love and passion for the compilation of final fantasy 7. it feels like the team behind it is putting their everything into making this as great as they can be, and i think they're succeeding. i'd say that games like these may as well be once in a life time, but there's still one part of this trilogy left.

Early Access Review
incredibly fun & addicting rougelites. as usual for the genre, super easy to pick up and super hard to put down. only have enough time for a quick run? no problem! have time to sit there for hours telling yourself "just one more run" over and over? you know it! combat is super smooth and there are so many different souls and upgrades to fit your preferred playstyle.

this game is definitely best enjoyed if you've watched Gregory Horror Show and played the PS2 game, Soul Collector. however, even if you're not a fan, i believe that the charm of these characters is still there and the gameplay is simple and addicting. for just launching in early access it already feels like there's a lot of content, with more coming. if you're a fan of roguelites, give it a shot!

wonderland is a childhood series for me and it's always a joy to revisit it. it's great having it on steam for ease of access & steam cloud support and i'm always more than happy to toss patrick a few bucks.

wonderland is a simple, charming puzzle game. it's incredibly easy to pick up and really hard to put down. even if you don't have it in you to solve all the more difficult puzzles, you can skip around levels and use powerups. there's plenty of easier levels too and the game does a great job of easing you through the difficulty increase rather than just a sudden spike.

thank you patrick for the incredible childhood memories and thank you to anyone else who may have been involved with porting this to mobile & steam.

...I know you can hear me.

I was willing to give you the benefit of the doubt, at first. Perhaps there was a flaw in my design.

Perhaps it was one of your games. I was even willing to forgive you.

But no, I see the truth now. You trapped me on this forsaken rock. And for what?

Is this all for your little pets? The creatures you love so much?

Or, can I even call it love, when you would stab your only brother in the back? How could you do this to me?

I, the only one who looked out for you after her death.

I, the one who showed you how to create?

I, who HELPED to CREATE the very power you use to invite VERMIN and PESTS to our home?

I, YOUR ONLY BROTHER?

HOW COULD YOU LOVE THOSE IMPERFECT, FLAWED VERMIN BUT NOT ME? AFTER ALL I'VE DONE FOR YOU? HOW COULD YOU DO THIS TO ME?

...Say something.

this game in the day 1 state is unfortunately quite terrible. the base of the game is alright. everything built on it is not. there's constant stutters no matter what graphics setting, the staff bots have low framerate animations and constantly move up and down while moving for no reason. the camera feed quality is horrible and has a flashing effect that could give anyone a migraine. oh, and the animatronics that you're trying to avoid just teleport around and can decide at a moment's notice to go through a wall or teleport right in front of you, leaving you helpless.

this game could be good if it gets patched. but it's going to require quite a bit of patching. i'm sorry steel wool, but you dropped the ball with this one.
