I cannot fathom why the game doesn't have a full screen option, nor why it makes you press two additional buttons when exiting the game in order to quit completely, instead of adding an additional button. Despite that, it's ok

Absurdily short. With only one level and no units to unlock, it has no replay value. Just... don't.

Cool pixel art, pretty fun even without being a game.

No comprendo a quien le puede parecer una buena idea comenzar a eliminar y censurar contenido una década después de lanzar el juego. Si no lo habeis comprado ya a estas alturas, ni se os ocurra hacerlo ya.

tl;dr: It's fun, it's remaster is good enough, and it's dirty cheap on sale. If you think you could like the game, grab it. The rest is an expanded opinion.

Well, first of all. It is not a review per se. It's more of a commentary about the game, so first things first.

If you're intrigued by the game, and do you keep in mind that the game and it's new remaster comes from data from more than twenty years ago, go and grab it. For reals, when it's on sale is just 1€ or $1. It's hard to feel disappointed if you end it not liking it after paying that kind of price.

If you remember the original game and just want to give it a go, grab it, of course. The remaster is kinda hit or miss, but it's still a nice job. For example, I totally despise the blue circles that were added to help in the inevitably pixel hunting stuff this game goes into sometimes. But the new portraits, and of course, the achievements, made me play the game again and finish what I couldn't finish twenty years prior.

So, that being said. The first time I got Broken Sword 2 was in a promo that came with the newspaper (I think it was El Mundo?). The thing was that if you got the paper on sunday and paid a little more, every week it came with a game. That promo ran for a few years. One of them, they put Broken Sword 1 in it, and I liked it. Sure, some puzzles were "hard" or came out of nowhere, but the style, and the sense of greatness once the plot starts to spin around itself with the templars and all that... it was quite a ride.

So, the next year, they put Broken Sword II in the promo. And for some reason, I remember getting to the two old ladies house and never finishing it. So, for some reason, a notification appeared on my Steam Deck telling me the game have been remastered specifically for the Steam Deck and I said, hey. Maybe it's time to revisit this game and finish it once a for all.

As I said earlier, the remaster is good. Do not expect any miracles, but since the developers let you download the original game if you got the remaster, comparing them is quite easy. The videos are so less compressed now, and the pictures look somewhat better. Also, they kept the original spanish voiceover, so it was really nice (although I didn't really want to hear Tomás Rubio again with his monotone voice, lol).

So... I was hooked. A lot of time has passed since the first time I played it, so I remember enough of the game to know what is it about, but not enough to actually know what to do at any given time. And it was smooth sailing until I got to Quaramonte. It was the first time in the entire game I was really puzzled about what to do. Ok, the map looked suspicious, but I don't really saw a plot or a reason connecting all the things I was doing. Then, the jungle hut, the revelation about the obsidian stones, for some reason I have to retrieve them... and then the game turns into a quite rushed job. Nico and George split, but for some reason, George's parts are so long and, again, with lots of puzzles without any kind of reasoning behind them. Why should I feel suspicious of the architect? Why will that guide me inside the museum? Why won't the net stick until I combine it with the markers and some plants? Is the film crew that stupid to not decide for looking for a new cave and using a handycam by themselves?

Nico's part was better layed out, but it was so short. Ok, get to the museum, see how the stone is stolen, escape, get magically to the docks, find a way to get inside the boat. But then, again, the south american village is burned because who knows? The little man from the beginning have a lighter that is needed for everything for some reason. And the final part... just a simple puzzle about levers and moving between rooms without any sense. Seriously, the ending got me by surprise. I didn't expect the game to end that way, that quickly and that... disappointingly!

I don't really know what I expected of the game, but I read somewhere else after this that I'm not the only one that find the game's ending a bit underwhelming. It looks like the original game was made in under a year after the success of the first one, you know, strike it while it's hot kinda thing. So I don't know if they run out of money, or time, but I don't know... maybe my younger self stopped playing just before ruining it?

Still, It's nice to have finished the game after so many years. And I repeat, the remaster won't raise some eyebrows, but given the "ancient" nature of the game, is really ok. It gives anyone a reason to actually sit down and play again this game (or for a first time). So good job, people.

I hear they're remastering the first one too. I guess if it has achievements too (and maybe trading cards?) I'll revisit that game too in the future. For now, it's nice to know the ending at least.

If you are expecting what everyone would be expecting out of a Monkey Island game, you won't find it. It may look like it at the beginning, after all the game have good production values, but trust me, in the end, it is not what you are expecting.

If you are just looking for some closure and a trip down memory lane, one that doesn't overstay it's welcome, go all out for it.

Voting no because I'm more of the prior kind of guy that the latter, and maybe my opinion will be more useful that way.

Also, this guy does a better job than me at resuming what the game makes you feel when you finish it. Only in spanish, and just if you want to know exactly what to expect in the game.

Update: After finishing the trivial cards (i hated making them appear randomly) and finding Cogg Island... seriously, you ran out of time? On a prequel fans like me have been awaiting for more than 12+ years in the best case, 30 in the worst? I think we could have managed to wait a couple more months for Cogg Island to be finished!

Oh, well. At least it's over.
