Orc (eng. orc) é un nome inspirado na palabra do inglés antigo orcneas. Na épica de Beowulf, orcneas descríbese como un dos descendentes de Caín no capítulo onde se presenta a Grendel ("Þanon untydras ealle onwocon,/eotenas ond ylfe, ond orcneas", ll. 111-112). Nunha carta que escribiu en 1954, Tolkien utilizou a palabra orco no sentido de "diaño", e citou a semellanza da pronuncia con outras palabras con significados similares -nas linguas da Terra Media que el construíu- como motivo de preferindo este significado.[1] Nun artigo sobre as linguas élficas en 1954, Tolkien dá a palabra "orco" como "espírito maligno ou coco", mentres que a palabra en inglés antigo provén do latín - deus do inframundo - Orcus. tomou a forma dun ogro en 1954. a súa linguaxe e utilizouse para describir unha criatura parecida a un xigante).
