Beautifully Wrong in All the Right Ways
I was minding my own business, sipping emotional apathy, when a friend sneak-attacked me with this game like some benevolent nostalgia dispenser. Didn’t even see it coming. One minute I’m scrolling some NSFW Reddit, the next I’m being lovingly body-slammed by a pixelated thingum straight outta Cronenberg’s weirdest acid trip.

And listen—it booped my dopamine receptors directly. No foreplay. Just wham, EarthBound-inspired combat, gross-out visuals that squelch in just the right way, and the tastiest retro-horror-inspired soundtrack I think I've ever encountered. There’s weird humor. There’s body horror. There’s a talking meat thing (probably). I don’t know. It’s gross and beautiful. Like a Flesh-Horror Construct in a Ball Gown Made of Stolen Skin and Glitter.

The secrets are NASTY. Miss a side path? That could’ve been a whole subplot. That weird NPC? Literal god-tier lore dump if you talk to them 5 times at 3 AM during a blood moon. This game doesn’t just reward curiosity—it gives you a kiss on the forehead for being a nosy little freak. You will miss things. You must go back. It’s the kind of game that crawls into your brain and lays eggs labeled “New Game.”

Also—don’t not be friendly. The game softly but firmly reminds us that shrugging off connection doesn’t protect you. It just hurts differently. It’s like the devs looked into my soul and said, “Being afraid of being hurt is still being hurt, babe.”

Minor bugs? Sure. They exist. But so do patches, and the developer’s actively fixing them and adding content. And in this economy?? That’s love, baby. That’s art. That’s another playthrough.

My love for games was rekindled a couple years ago, but this is why I stayed. To be weird. To be moved. To get booped.

Hard to describe Phoenix Springs. Poetic and surreal, wordy and insubstantial at the same time, it resembles a dream that is growing rapidly around you to prevent you from waking up. A friend I shared the amazement and confusion of playing it with wrote a review that's probably the best description: https://test-steamproxy.haloskins.io/profiles/76561198007098487/recommended/1973310/
