I sadly cannot recommend the game in its current state. I experience crashes straight to desktop far more often than i would like, and with the way the save system works I often lose entire hours worth of progress due to this. If you are willing to put up with potential hours lost to game crashes, then you will have an absolute blast playing it because the game is extremely fun baring this issue! But knowing that this could be an extreme annoyance to someone and absolutely ruin their experience, I think you might want to wait a bit before picking it up.

Short and Skinny -
The game is really enjoyable, albeit I feel like it might even be a bit too easy. The game is either terribly optimized, or just has something currently broken (and I mean terribly broken) because the frame rate is absolutely buggered. Reports of people getting increased frame rates by changing audio settings etc. leaves me to believe its not just an optimization problem. I'm giving it a recommended now despite two things: First no idea why its 70 bucks. 60 would be fine for the content IF the game was working. Secondly there is no actual guarantee it will ever be fixed. If you are going to buy it, then buy it at your own risk.

Slightly More Meat -
Most of the weapons are a lot more simplistic than those found in the monster hunter series. There is no need to hit both attack buttons at once, and the move sets are much more streamlined. one button for light attacks, one for medium, and one for heavy commitment. There is some mixing between them, for instance if you press the heavy attack button on the katana while in the middle of a light attack, it shortcuts to a multi hit move, while hitting it during the medium attack gives you an i-frame move that moves your character rather far for repositioning.

Most of the complexity during combat comes from making use of the building mechanic. You can build objects one top of each other (up to 3 objects high) and then to the side of them. Differently organized objects can create more advanced structures. An example of this would be 3 springs on top of one another creates a large hammer that swings down and hits a monster. Managing your building resources mid combat to maximize damage and interrupts is an enjoyable experience that was a breath of fresh air for the monster hunting genre.

In terms of exploration, the game has many ways to get around the map that even the most recent monster hunter game, rise, would probably find ridiculous. From giant traversal wires that you can place just about anywhere, ala death stranding towers style, to wind vortexes for maximizing height gained. You can even place your own camps around, a much welcome addition to some of the static camp placements in monster hunter. All of these mentioned buildables are semi-permanent, meaning they will stay up until you tear them down (Or if a monster walks through them I believe they will disappear for a bit until the monster has finished walking through it). There are non permanent buildables as well mentioned above in the combat section. Most of the non permanent buildables will stay around though until something destroys them.

I think that overall this game falls a bit short when it comes to the complexness that monster hunter now presents with its monster's ai and combat. It succeeds over monster hunter though in its map design by giving players the traversal tools to make moving around the large maps enjoyable, and while trusting the player with the decision on where to best place those tools for themselves. I feel that if these tools were implemented into a monster hunter game, the teams would be so restrictive with either placement or implementation that they would be far to useless or boring.

So as a recap: The building is interesting, a breath of fresh air, complements the combat well, and makes traversing the large maps much more enjoyable. The weapon combat itself falls a bit short compared to monster hunter. The monster AI, movesets, etc. also falls a bit short. The 70 dollar price tag makes no sense even before all of the issues with the game. The game DOES have a lot of issues with frame rate, to the point that many consider it unplayable, and these issues might not be optimization (might be an underlying bug). While I am recommending the game based off of how much fun I am having, try getting it for less than 70, and don't buy it with the expectation of it being fixed.

A fantastically rewarding speed-running game. Worth the asking price and definitely worth it if on sale!

As of right now I just completed the DLC on Nightmare difficulty. This was an unenjoyable experience and a grind. None of the demons in particular feel tough except for the spirit demons, which are tough by making the demon that you are fighting unfair. In fact, there were two encounters on the final level that I would not have been able to beat except for the fact that I had BFG ammo. This DLC is brutally punishing and not in the fun way. Every single new feature that I encountered in the level design did not awe me, it simple made me stop and think "Who the ♥♥♥♥ designed this? Who thought this was a good idea? Who had fun with this?" I highly recommend that you stay away from this DLC, and if your interested in the little story to be had, then view it online.

PS. Anyone who defends the need for using the microwave beam to kill an enemy is dumb.

Early Access Review
A fantastic toy that falls short in quality of life features.

Townscaper is, as many have called it, a fun toy. Sadly, with the state that Townscaper is currently in, I can not recommend the purchase of the game. The gameplay of Townscaper consists of clicking to place blocks of land. If land is already in place, then a building will arise. While this may sound boring, I believe there is a calm pleasure to be found here. I enjoyed my beginning moments with the game, shaping a landmass and bringing life to a town. The main problem with the game is the speed at which you can build. There are currently no tools to assist in massive land placement or sculpting. This means that creating a large city will mostly be dominated by the slow process of placing land. To me this slows the pace of the game down immensely and prevents me from wanting to put in the effort to get a large enough landmass to make a town. The slow methodical approach of block placement and building does lend itself perfectly to making the minute changes to the landscapes and buildings that one would want however, making the game ideal for sketching out small plots of land. Sadly, a lot of these intricacies are statically generated, and as such a player can not pick out certain designs for buildings, sometimes causing buildings placed far enough apart to have a samey feel to them.

TLDR; The game is fun for small scale sculpting, but in its current state is far too tedious for large scale sculpting. I would wait for possibly the addition of more sculpting tools or finer control over the looks of placed buildings before purchase.

An adorable and fun 3D-Platformer, with so much character and such good level design. A recommended buy no matter what type of game you like.
