Pretty neato, I liked the look of the game UI in the concept art more but what's here is still perfectly fine.

It's a novel concept with cute characters (and I want to see more of them!)

Main criticism is that the witch character's hand looks really weird on the character select screen, its pretty jarring lol

I'll be reviewing the game for the game, here, and not for minor inconveniences. My thoughts on the review bombing are at the bottom.

TLDR: It's great fun, if you see it on sale for $40 or less and it's an easy recommendation. Good times to be had here. Ignore the Steam review score, it's been skewed by sillies.

It's fun, as always. Mostly "more of the same" which isn't totally a bad thing.

Some positive changes/additions..
>Damage number popups to better feel how much damage you're doing, and when the enemy will be ded
>Wing Diver dedicated equipment slot that doesn't draw battery (otherwise most of those things would never be worth using, such as the grenades) -- and other QoL/boosts for other classes
>More visceral effects on enemies as they visibly take damage
>Even moreso "B movie" feels with how AWFUL the voice acting and in-engine 'cutscenes' are. For most games this is a con, but for EDF it is what we expect and love about it.
>Other little QoL changes -- now you can finally bind things to extra mouse buttons.

The negative..

It is, unfortunately, not making any major leaps for the series -- it mostly feels like a gigantic expansion pack for EDF5 to me. Like other EDFs, there is a LOT of game here, many hours of entertainment -- but most of it is recycling content, so it feels like it doesn't justify a $60 asking price. I feel it should have launched at $40, considering the actual production quality and variety of content.
If anyone's on the fence I'd suggest grabbing it on discount. It IS still great fun, though. Eagerly awaiting mods to enhance the experience and address a few of my personal gripes about EDF as a series (grindiness, not getting equal armor upgrades for classes you aren't currently playing, etc.)

The "Epic account drama"..
It is literally a minor inconvenience, at worst. It is not the end of the world, you login/create an Epic account and that's it. Took me three seconds. You don't have to use the Epic Launcher, even. Absolutely nothing worth negative reviews, and it should not affect one's decision to purchase or not - there are factors that actually matter to help you decide that.

Considering all factors -- this game should be sitting comfortably around ~85% positive on Steam, so here's my positive review to nudge it toward that number.

Early Access Review
TOTAL SCORE: 77% - Updated Jan 31
kinda jank and rough, and shamelessly copies things but in a fairly fun and compelling way.
UPDATE: after playing further in, the weaknesses of the game are even more glaring:

>the world feels kind of lacking in things to find and do. it wants to be Breath of the Wild world-wise, but there's not nearly enough neat little things to discover in the map, there's lots of wide stretches with just.. nothing. maybe a pal you've seen a dozen times before already, maybe another lifmunk statue - that's it. No cool little puzzles or environmental things to marvel at.

>the bugs: have had countless bugs, some annoying, some disappointing. too many to list, but pals getting stuck in the base (with a simple base design) is one example.

>the jank: lots of little things add up. placing decorations on the walls for example, or climbing having you hovering 2 feet off the wall you're gripping. also, the grapple gun is jank incarnate lmao.

>the scaling/combat: you feel hard level gated. things above your level just take no damage even when using your pal skills, higher tier weaponry, etc. you're basically forced to grind levels to slowly inch through the game. I'd recommend setting the game to "Hard" preset, but crank up the EXP gain to the max to make progressing less time-wasting.

I still like seeing the seething people are doing over this game tho lmao

Invasion campaign review so far

I went into this with reasonable expectations. I both do, and do not, recommend this, but am going with "Yes" because the score is currently 18% and it should be 50-75%. Read on for more.

First of all, the big problem here is that (as far as I can tell) you cannot buy the Invasion missions standalone. If these were buyable for, say, $5, it would be a fairly reasonable recommendation.

However, it seems the only way is to buy this bundle, which costs $15 - you get the missions, and $10 of premium currency. Effectively, the missions cost $5, but you're forced to buy $10 of coins alongside it. Not ideal.

If you are someone who'd want to buy the battle pass or a skin anyway, then it's a reasonable recommendation. If you're a F2P who just wants some co-op content, maybe not.

Regarding the missions themselves, they're fine. They're only slightly more fun than free event co-op missions (e.g. the Halloween ones) have been, but considerably longer and with a few decent gimmicks and bosses thrown in.

The lore, voicemails, text messages and such do a decent job to flesh out the world and characters, so if you're someone really interested in the world of Overwatch, this part is pretty neato. The cutscenes so far are solid and feel pretty good to watch. However, you could easily just look these up on a wiki, watch a video/stream, etc.

In terms of raw gameplay, it definitely could benefit from more customization or freedom - even just the initially shown "choose 2 variants of abilities for each hero" would go a long way. It does feel rather limited.

There is moderate replayability in replaying as different heroes/comps to hear different voice lines, and unlock new lore records for specific heroes, but I'd say it's not enough to tempt me to play these missions more than two or three times max.

There are also a few brutal difficulty spikes (playing on Expert for my first run-through) where it seems to just become crazy hard suddenly.

There should be permanent checkpoints throughout the mission, or at least, your lives are refilled when you hit a new checkpoint. The current system of "you get 3 retries, when you fail 3 times, you exit the mission and start all over" is pretty tiresome if you fail out of a mission more than once.

All in all, it's okay. I don't feel horribly ripped off, but I also do not "strongly recommend" it. I would say to buy these missions only if you're really big on Overwatch and want more, or if you were gonna buy the battle pass anyway and can benefit from the coins.

If that's not you, skip the PvE and stick to the (free) PvP.

An ACTUAL honest review of Overwatch 2, from someone with 2000+ hours in both TF2 and Overwatch (Updated Apr 2025)

Among a sea of reviewbombing and intellectual dishonesty, look here if you want an objective review to decide to try this game or not.

QUICK UPDATE FOR 2025:
Basically all of the changes and new content in the past year has made the game even better. Perks are fun, most of the new maps/modes are fun, etc. The soon-to-release "MOBA-like" Stadium mode looks like a ton of fun and I'm only sad that it will be ranked only - a casual mode to play around with builds would be appreciated. In general, the game has continued to expand and improve and now it's even better than ever, IMO. Read on for the original review of OW2.

Gameplay
- 8/10

It's a 5v5 hero-based shooter with objectives. All three roles can be fun to play, impactful and skill expressive. Heroes are very diverse gameplay wise. Time to kill is not too long, not too short. Sustain is powerful but not ridiculously so, which allows teamfights to go on for longer before you're doing the walk back from spawn as a team. Teamwork is rewarded, yet as an individual, you can definitely carry games.

They've introduced a 6v6 queue for the people who really prefer that (though I still firmly believe that 2 tanks results in more boring, spongy & shield-heavy gameplay, as well as unfair combos that are more annoying to play against) so that's a win for 6v6 enjoyers.

Performance, visuals, sound
- 9/10

Mostly, this game runs great and looks pretty good doing it. I get above 240FPS with an RTX3070, a mid-range, last gen GPU, on max settings at 1440p. Friend plays on an old laptop and stays above 60fps.

The art style and character design are great (and yes, this is why there's so much Overwatch p*rn out there), and the folks on the staff who design, voice, model and animate these characters all do a fantastic job at bringing the world to life.

Sound design wise -- in general, Overwatch has THE best sound design in gaming - it's all very thoughtfully done, feeding you all the information you need to play--even small choices like having ultimate voicelines be in a different language depending if its you, an ally, or an enemy, go a long way to giving a strong understanding of whats happening around you. I could write an entire steam review JUST on the sound design in the game and why it's so good - maybe I'll make a YouTube video someday.

Playerbase
- 7/10

Being completely honest - OW2's playerbase is good. The actual playerbase, the people in the game that you will play with.

People are often willing to have fun moments, like both teams pausing the game to emote spam and chat around the objective, or players (like me!) who will find a vulnerable enemy Mercy, wave hello, and let her walk away to her team.

In general, OW2 remains, in my experience the most friendly and least-toxic community to play with - especially toward women - of any PvP game out there.

Overall
- 8/10
This is a game worth trying. It'll cost you nothing to try, so give it a download and judge for yourself, and leave your own review based on your own individual opinion just like I have. It is free, it is fun, it is not pay2win even a tiny bit.

Compared to Marvel Rivals
I think both games are good. They're both fun. You should try both and see which you like more.

For me, personally, OW2 remains the better game. It runs and performs far, far better (I get 240 fps at 1440p just fine in OW2 -- in Rivals, I struggle to hit 120fps, even with DLSS upscaling from 720p and everything on low.)

I also don't like Rivals' "team up mechanics", which ultimately means part of your hero's kit is locked behind 'another ally picking the right hero to allow you to use it'. It's a fun novelty, but to me, purely a gimmick that's fun in the short term, and detrimental to the game in the long term. You may feel differently and that's valid.

I also don't like Rivals' hero roster being "only Marvel super heroes", as it's very limiting as to what potential upcoming characters can be.

Rivals does do a lot of fun and interesting things though, so again, I think you should try both free games and decide for yourself. Competition is good and benefits everyone.

About that rampant review bombing, and why it should be ignored

I don't think there has ever been, or will ever be, "good" review bombing. Even when it comes to games/businesses/people I dislike, review bombing is the total opposite of "based".
It's basically throwing a temper tantrum and becoming a loud minority, artificially inflating or deflating a product's score, and defeating the whole purpose of reviews.

I did have a long list of common review bomb 'points' and why they're not valid, but there's just not enough room for that anymore with my updated review. Just keep in mind: reviews are for reviewing the game, not the things outside of the game. It's for reviewing what's there and playable, not "what could be" or "what could've been". It's not a place to flex your bias to drive up/down a game's score, it's a place to be objective and fair. And this is a free game that is fun to play with a great community, no matter how much loud negative nancies wish otherwise.

Game was great, I've always voiced how I wished for co-op games that actually flex the co-op aspect at every turn and it's good to see one that does it justice. Things are constantly changing so even ADHD players can get through this. Like Mario levels, new gimmicks or mechanics are introduced, used a bit, and then thrown away before they have time to get too stale. Very creative scenarios always cropping up.

My only complaint is that the difficulty is overall pretty low, auto-aim is too generous (an option to turn it off would be great), etc. It'd be great to have a hard mode or at least some extra-challenging post-credits content to try to do, to really push your teamwork to its limit.

Overall a strong 8/10 despite those issues for me, and the best co-op experience to date.

It's sorta cute, but ultimately it's just a diceroll/RNG simulator. There's basically zero skill, your interaction consists of clicking the diceroll button and everything else is fluff.

Just boring and not fun IMO, but to each their own

Cool roguelike/roguelite game, replayable with that "one more run" mentality because you could always get better items/printers/etc on the next go around.

Fair amount of challenges to go for and things to do, which will only expand with future updates (can't wait for Artifacts to be involved, that'll help a lot!)

They really need to do something about Prismatic Trials tho - Mul-T is always the optimal character, or almost always at least. Maybe start making Trials be locked to certain characters or something, idk. The lack of interesting rewards for Trials also kinda disappoints.

Each character also only has 1 unlockable skin currently which is just a paletteswap, they really should add more, maybe cycling out as Prismatic Trial top10% rewards.

Overall an 8/10 game, definitely worth playing
