The game would not even start. BattlEye or whatever wouldn't ever load the game. Plus, it forces you to open Ubisoft Connect... I'm glad I only paid $1 for this trash.

No Man's Sky is revolutionary.

8 years ago, Hello Games released a product that was far from what they'd shown off and almost nothing like what they'd promised. It was a disaster. A nightmare. Its failures were impossible to ignore. Many, many people were rightfully angry and requested refunds; Hello Games suffered greatly at the hands of gamers and media alike. Most developers would have thrown in the towel and abandoned their project, desperate to pretend it never happened.

Hello Games was not that developer. They went radio silent, but not to try and hide from their failures, but to find a way to make it right.

In 2016, I tried to refund the game. I tried too early, though, before they opened up refunds to people who had played more than 2 hours. I'd already played 20 hours by the time I gave up due to disappointment. It was too much for Steam. I accepted my losses and uninstalled.

In 2016, I told everyone to avoid the game. I told my friends that it was an ambitious idea but the developers.. they flew too close to the sun.

In 2024, I give an enthusiastic YES when people ask if they should buy it.

No Man's Sky is not perfect. It still has the odd bug here and there, and changes to the engine have occasionally ruined old bases. The graphics engine is not perfectly optimized, so even on a high-mid or low-high range PC you might still have some performance issues if you try to play it on highest settings. Also, it never quite lived up to a lot of the original hype; a lot of the neat ways things worked and interesting ideas you see in early trailers never quite made it into the game... at least not the way you saw them in the trailers. Instead, however, they have dramatically expanded upon the game's original premise and, year over year, given us more and more. They added (in no particular order) base building, land and water vehicles, underwater exploration and base building, new ship classes and types, expanded lore and story, freighters with base building, pet collecting, pirates and piracy/smuggling/bounty hunting, cooking, working and then improved multiplayer, a pseudo-horror element with the abandoned freighters.. just so much stuff. This isn't anywhere near all of it. Best part? ALL OF THE UPDATES ARE FREE. They have NEVER charged for an update to this game in the whole 8 years it has existed.

No Man's Sky is my go-to game when I just want to relax and veg out for awhile. It puts me into a happy place, even if what I'm doing might seem redundant from the outside. It's a Zen space for me, and I love it for that.

What I'm saying is... if you think this game might be up your alley, it probably is, and you should buy it.

The gameplay is solid and the game is great, but removing all of the original content and making all characters max-level from the very start was a stupid decision and it makes the game no longer worth playing, especially for new players. Good luck knowing what the heck is going on or why you should care!

The battle pass/seasonal story events also ruin the game; story should be always available and not time-limited, especially in such a story-heavy game setting.

Overall, I was optimistic when Bungie was given complete control over Destiny, but they have squandered their good will and devolved into the kind of game studio I have no interest in any longer.

REVIEW EDIT 4/8/2023: I no longer recommend this game due to Funcom decided to resort to the exploitation of FOMO to make money as opposed to continuing to work with traditional DLC as they have for years. DO NOT encourage this behavior from companies; do not buy this game.

Despite the bugs, the modding ability of this game makes it endlessly fun. I never imagined when I bought it years ago that I would be so addicted to it as I have been lately, but a good private server with good friends makes for a great time!

There are some strange design decisions around the clan, ownership, and admin systems but we have figured out awkward ways to work around them. Ultimately, it is a game I suggest you get if you like survival games.

Holy twirly missiles, Fokker! This satisfies my Macross/Robotech urges in ways I didn't even know I could! It makes the anime kid in me squeal like an overeager school girl on Christmas day! I'm still getting used to the controls, but it's smooth and so far everything makes sense. All in all, a great game!

I am in love with Lara Croft. There. I said it. She is a real, believable character and I want to see her succeed. I want to see her reap vengeance upon these evil men. This game is amazing. Yes, it has its problems. It isn't perfect. But it is extremely fun and has a very well-written lead character.

Give it a shot. You won't be sorry.

I am recommending this game. I know I don't really NEED to, but Steam doesn't realize that I've already recommended a game. Stupid badges.

If you enjoyed Portal, then you should play Portal 2. No no, don't spend any time talking about it, just buy it already and get started. The testing chambers await, after all.

And you're not getting any thinner.

You're still reading this? You should be playing already.

I thought you were my friend? Look at how you're distrusting me by not playing Portal 2. This.. this hurts my feelings, you know.
