SIGNALIS is more a walking sim than a game and I struggle to understand its universal praise.

95% of the gameplay is walking through confusing corridor layouts to bring this key item to this slot to obtain another key item to bring to this other more different slot. Enemies respawn meaning the gunplay is pointless, and even on survival difficulty the enemies lack any semblance of threat. On top of this, the limited 6 slot inventory creates the most meaningless and tedious backtracking experience if you dare to bring a gun or two to have some fun with. This means the best strategy is to just leave everything besides a couple healing items in storage, sprint past every single enemy, and swipe only the necessary key items to progress.

The game wears its inspiration solidly on its sleeve, copying 1:1 scenes from Resident Evil and Silent Hill. Also, while presented in an interesting manner, the story is a fairly generic cyberpunk fare of "capitalist planet colony prints sentient AI's to gather resources but a spooky virus turned them into zombies", complete with an excess of German and Japanese text to sell the Blade Runner fantasy. A couple of the puzzles were decent but there aren't that many in the first place

SIGNALIS' saving grace is its absolutely gorgeous visual presentation. PS1 era pixel graphics and an interesting mix of 2D isometric and 3D CG Anime. The in-your-face visual effects have been done tastefully, and overall is just a very fun thing to look at. If it goes on deep discount, or there are some solid gameplay overhaul mods, it would become worth it just to enjoy the art style and the effort that went into it.
