This game ain't what it used to be.

I wish I could write so much more, but for sake of brevity, I've excluded mentioning things other reviews will.

TL;DR summary: 2013-2016 Tanki were this game's golden years.

Fast forward to today and it is now filled with new concepts that don't make sense in the context of the game's style/aesthetic (drones? augments? protection modules?). Drug use meta is still rampant, P2W too. All of these cascade unto each other to make gameplay worse than it was.

New Additions

Don't misunderstand me; the new concepts added are simple enough to learn under 5 minutes, although I doubt 9 year old me would've fully comprehended their intricacies. In and of itself, not a bad thing. Rather, the new additions are great!

From a strategic standpoint, they allow for a lot of variation in play-styles and encourage players to kit out against certain builds. That'd make for outstanding eSports gameplay, given the strategy element... except this game is more casual than sports. Oh right, what happened to the Tanki Online eSports?

Pay-to-Win

Drug use is the same as it was right around the time I stopped playing Tanki. I remember matches in 2017 or so being fun when I drug abused (slang for using 'supplies' that give you powerups, e.g. speed).

Here's the funny part: wanna know how long that lasted? 5 days. A YEAR or so of stocking supplies from missions (free method of getting supplies that otherwise can be purchased) only for it to get used up in less than a week. I might be biased and/or exaggerating here, so take it with a grain of salt.

Drugs? Let's do some math:
6 USD = 400 'Tankoins' = 16,000 crystals: so ~45x each supply including repair kits (which is 3x other supplies) totalling 275. Ignoring repair kits? ~80x of each supply for a total of 320. Ridiculous.

An overly generous estimate of 5 of each supply used or 25 per match results in 6 USD lasting 11 matches. Keep in mind people use WAY more than 25, and most don't keep track at all since it's almost habitual to spam repair/defence/damage supplies right before you die.

Supplies are addictive. You steamroll non-druggie players --> lot's of kills --> dopamine --> repeat

Oh and, TANK UPGRADES THAT FREE PLAYERS CANNOT UNLOCK. 2,000 'Tankoins' or ~20 USD to upgrade tank components to higher levels (Mk.3 --> Mk.6) that F2P players cannot. And you'll still be playing in the same ranks. This is no different from a Global Elite player playing against a Master Guardian Elite in CS:GO, except instead of skill it's damage and stats that's vastly far apart.
You have no chance.

Conclusion

All in all: a system whose devs don't care enough to balance or even try to hide how P2W it is. I understand that they have to make money, but look at it this way: TO used to have 100k daily players during peak hours back then, now you can't even see the stats on their website. Make of that what you will.

I'm sad.

I have incredibly fond memories of this game: coming back from school to play this every evening, meeting friends who would all gradually go on to leave, that friend who was last online 8 years ago (I teared up when I was younger), or that guy in chat who enlightened my 10 year old self saying "religion is simply a tool to control", or the countless flame wars which ended with making more friends.

The community vlogs lost their charm after that Russian with the accent left (Semyon, we miss you). And the redesign; I didn't realise it then, but now I do: it shed more than just the old, charming UI.

Maybe I'm sadder that we'll never get the old internet back, than at Alternativa's ultra-capitalist decisions. Maybe it's because there is no longer a community surrounding it as vibrant as it used to be. It evokes the same melancholy as watching your childhood play-area, full of trees and people, turn into a wasteland

Despite its flaws back then, we loved it.

Then we grew up

Fun game. It's a must buy if you like trucks and driving. Multiplayer (TruckersMP) is fun as well.
