From the very first steps into the vast open world, I was overcome with a sense of nostalgia and awe. Final Fantasy VII Rebirth doesn’t just honor its legacy; it builds upon it masterfully, delivering an emotional and thrilling adventure that exceeds all expectations.

Positive
  1. World Design: The world is breathtakingly detailed, inviting players to slow down and soak in every moment. From bustling towns to serene natural vistas, every corner feels alive, brimming with character and stories to uncover.

  2. Emotional Impact: The game masterfully reimagines the beloved cast, transforming our low-poly childhood friends into vibrant, relatable individuals. Every interaction deepens their bonds, making us laugh, cry, and cheer. It's a fate-defying, god-challenging epic that captures the magic of the PS1 original while pushing the narrative to new heights.

  3. Combat Evolution: The battle system reaches new levels of excellence, building on Remake’s foundation. It’s a dynamic mix of strategy and real-time action, encouraging experimentation with character synergy. Every battle feels rewarding, keeping players engaged and invested.

  4. Music: Another stellar soundtrack that reinterprets classic tracks while introducing unforgettable new pieces. Each composition enhances the atmosphere, whether it’s the intensity of a boss battle or the tranquility of exploring a new region.

  5. Narrative Boldness: Rebirth takes bold steps to expand and reinterpret the original story while remaining respectful of its roots. The twists are surprising yet logical, pulling players deeper into the mystery and heightening the excitement for Part 3.

  6. MiniGames: I won’t spoil anything, but the sheer number of MiniGames is as surprising and entertaining as it was in the original. Each one adds charm and variety, keeping the experience fresh and exciting throughout the adventure.

  7. Technical Excellence: A smooth PC release with outstanding performance, proving that Square Enix is listening to fans who want quicker ports. Thank you for making this accessible to more players worldwide.

Negative
  1. Exclusivity Frustrations: While I appreciate the fast PC port, the initial PlayStation exclusivity remains a sore point. Final Fantasy fans shouldn’t feel forced to buy a specific console just to experience this incredible series.

  2. Overwhelming Spectacle: Some moments feel overindulgent in their grandeur, slightly detracting from their emotional impact. A touch more restraint in key scenes could elevate the experience even further.

  3. Audio Quality Issues: It’s disappointing to encounter “low quality” or compressed sound files, especially noticeable in weapon sound effects. This issue was known during the PS5 release and later patched, so seeing the same problem reappear in the PC re-release is simply unacceptable.

  4. DLSS Dependency Issues: It seems that players using AMD or Intel GPUs are facing significant visual problems due to the lack of proper DLSS support. This is a 100% no-go for a game of this caliber. While the community has reacted quickly and provided some workarounds (as seen in several Reddit posts), this should have been addressed by the developers prior to release.

Final Thoughts
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is a triumph in every sense of the word. It’s a love letter to fans of the original while also welcoming new players into its grand, beautifully realized world. Every moment of this journey is packed with heart, and I can’t wait to see how this trilogy concludes in Part 3.

Score: 10/10

Why this game is special to me:
Even though I initially played this through Steam Family Share from my son, I couldn’t resist buying my own copy after just 10 hours. As a lifelong Final Fantasy fan, I was disappointed by the PlayStation exclusivity deals but grateful for the fast port to PC. This game reminded me why I fell in love with the series decades ago.

I’ve also set a personal goal to 100% every Final Fantasy game, including unlocking all achievements.

My FF7 Original Review (PS1, in German): Read it here

"I’m ready for Part 3. Nostalgia perfected."

I want to take a moment to express how incredibly grateful I am to be able to relive a cherished part of my childhood in a modern way, now alongside with my son. Sharing this journey with him, experiencing the "same" emotions, has been magical. Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is more than just a game - it’s a bridge between generations, allowing me to connect my past with the present in such a heartfelt way.

After playing First Descendants, this game shows me what F2P truly can be. I love it.

Sorry, but I have to leave for "Once Human." It made me realize what free-to-play truly can be. Don't get me wrong, "First Descendants," we had a blast together. I farmed 5 Descendants, soloed every interceptor, and finished the story. But honestly, grinding for prestige started to feel like a chore. It's not you, it's me... I just need something more exciting. Let's still be friends?

The game is awesome, but needing a PSN Account sucks.
I remember playing PlayStation 1; it was such a cool time as a kid.
To be honest, everything Sony is doing today has been angering me since the PS3.

I purchased the game on release for 2x100€, one copy for my wife and one for myself. Unfortunately, the review I wrote got deleted. Interestingly, I found more enjoyment in Lost Ark, having spent 1000 hours playing it, than I did with this game.

Fallout but in space and I love it.
I'm just a small star in the universe, but let me tell you this: Starfield is absolutely an awesome Bethesda RPG. After the disappointment of Fallout 76, I had no expectations. Strangely, I even miss those entertaining Bethesda bugs; that's how bug-free it is.

Starfield is very immersive and has become quite addictive for me: God, I love the shipbuilding system.

In terms of performance:
...it's running smoothly on my system. I'm playing it on a 2080S with an i5 9600k at "4k" resolution (62% FSR) and sometimes at WQHD (80% FSR) everything at high. When using a controller, it feels incredibly smooth. My loading times are fast.

I'm having a blast. Enough letters; space is waiting for me.

Progress:
  • I've completed the main story (for the first time in a Bethesda game)
  • United Colonies ☑
  • Crimson Fleet ☑
  • Ryujin ☑
  • Explored the universe for; 20 hours
  • Achievement Progress; 40 of 50

Mods I prefer:
  • Starfield Script Extender (SFSE)
  • SFSE ASI Loader
  • Baka Achievement Enabler (SFSE)
  • Upscaling Fix - FSR - DLSS - XeSS
  • StarUI Inventory
  • Neutral LUTs - No Color Filters (DARK SPACE)
  • Compact Mission UI (60FPS)
  • Cleanfield - A No-Intro Videos and Clean Menu Fix
