After finishing the GDF campaign and 1/3 the way into DYN campaign, here's something I feel about the story - I don't really know what we (as in, the in game factions, or individuals associated with them) are fighting for. The story really comes down to "hey you are GDF, over there is DYN which is the bad guy, now go and fight them".

But... why? What's behind all the fighting? You really gotta have something higher than money so people would be willing to support you. For the Red alert and General factions, ideology. For the Starctaft factions, repel zerg invasion. For the Empire of rising sun, add in destiny. For Yuri, his vision and his .. persuasive .. abilities. For GDI, see America/NATO. And for NOD it's because one man said so - which doesn't really make sense - not if that one man isn't the mysterious, charismatic, absolute leader that is Kane.

And that's where the problem is - DYN is NOD without Kane. If you've played C&C for 5 hours you know what NOD would be like without Kane. It never would have existed in the first place. That's what the story is like. There's no clash between ideologies, no 'what do we fight for', no 'we bring freedom to those oppressed', no legacy or vision ... no 'peace through power!'; only 'they took this from us so we need it back'. It's like two 6yo's are fighting over some toy.

i love it when i issue a move command and an unskippable cutscene plays, and right after said cutscene my units end up right in the face of enemies. i mean its certainly very nice during cutscenes you dont take damage (?) but clearly someone didnt think about right after the cutscene?? if you are gonna take control away from me, maybe just freeze everything ion the map lest someone ends up somewhere i dont want them to be???

speaking of which, these in-mission cutscenes themselves are so bad. unskippable, intrusive, often of no significant importance, and the game would be no worse without them. i'm totally a 5yo that each time there is a enemy convoy coming you need to hold my hands and let me look at them for half a minute????? just letting the npc announce it would have worked.

in-campaign upgrades is kinda fun, but why make it nigh impossible to reset upgrades? just, whats the rationale behind this? lemme guess, "we poured so much effort into these upgrades, that you should not be able to try them all out in one single playthru, and if you find out something isnt what you expected, well shame on you"? yeah, starcraft 2 did that too, nice job our 2025 game is doing as good as a 2010 game??

speaking of sc2, here's something sc2 has and tempest doesnt - where's my beloved add unit to control group hotkey? commonly known as shift+1-9? sc2 has this; cnc3 has this; aoe4 has this; coh3 has this. having to select units, then shift+1-9, then ctrl+1-9, is so red alert 2 (oooh, we comparing ourselves to a 2000 game now...)

also, skirmish supports 4(four) players max. honestly wtf. i cant tell if this is because theres *currently* no 6p or 8p map, admittedly making them takes more effort; or because they never intended for the game to be played with 6 or 8 players. kills a lot of the fun if it's the latter case.

visuals nice, bosses bad. stage 2 boss is a hard check on mobility abilities. got no mobility abilities dropped along the way leading up to stage 2 boss? well good luck dodging AoE attacks the size of ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ Australia... 3 5(five) times in a row. Either bosses are balanced with a fully levelled skill tree in mind or with multiplayer in mind - idgaf; for solo play these attacks are just not fun.

okay survivor game for the first 30 hours or so, but unnecessarily grindy** and extremely repetitive. combos are really restrictive if you want to go any deeper after the end of the 2nd~3rd loop. lazy difficulty level (higher difficulty=more bullet sponge). Too much dependence is put on out-of-run progression (skill tree, weapon upgrade, runes to a lesser extent, etc). The first 30 or so hours is honestly pretty fun as you are gradually introduced to new stuff (for example, character-specific skill trees only unlock after you max out the shared skill tree), but after that you start to realize that the game is just a mega grind fest. Still, worth the price especially at a discount. Game is still being actively updated so thats a plus.

**more on 'unnecessarily grindy': each character has a unique mechanic locked behind their character skill tree that unlocks at lv20. for example, beastmaster's beasts, ghost captain's ghost ship. It makes little sense that you need to unlock these features for a character which are an integral part of their gameplay. Don't forget that character skill trees are locked behind the shared skill tree, so for the first handful of hours you simply don't get to unlock these. The character skill tree proceeds to be an absolute nightmare of a grind, requiring character level AND resources. even with a build and a strategy optimized towards gathering money and resources, you'll still need many hours of active gameplay. Oh did I mention you can't idle this? it's because enemy hits hard as fk - at the optimal difficulty for resources - but player healing is nerfed into the ground, so to stay alive you need to actively dash.

fun little game to have a few hours of fun with a friend, but once you up the difficulty it essentially becomes 95% dependent on the RNG to give you a good weapon/upgrade combo. Player's skill really doesn't matter.

Game lacks real replayability. because doing the same run over and over again isn't called replayability. It has 3 maps which indeed feels different, except mobs are the same across all maps. 'higher difficulty' follows the laziest design - double enemy damage and hp (maybe increased density too?), same everything else, done. All that really does is slowing down the game pace exponentially, because if you kill mobs slower then you level up slower .. and if you level up slower, guess what, you kill mobs slower. Should have learnt that bullet sponge isn't a good way to crank difficulty up.

Also lacks any meaningful combo depth, every weapon/spell pretty much plays on its own. Vampire Survivors mitigates this by introducing items that boost certain aspects of weapons, for example one that boosts all AoE area, which creates a pseudo-combo between all the AoE weapons. Also there isn't even interactions between elements in terms of mechanics, if your spell is fire+ice then literally all it does is it applies the fire effect (DoT) and the ice effect (slow), which is quite a disappointment when we found that out. Why would you call it an element and not just call it an 'additional effect' instead? something along the lines 'give this spell slow fx' instead of 'infuse this spell with ice'. because as far as i remember there is no in game mention of what the elements exactly do anyways.

There is also a huge imbalance between.. everything. Take spells, some of them becomes irrelevant as soon as you get another, or requires 3 augments and 2 elements to *almost* match the usefulness/damage of another with 1 augment and 1 element. Which by the way makes the replayability even worse because you shoot yourself in the toes if you pick a 'bad' spell. I hate to say it but it really feels like whoever designed these decided to add the most common 'spells' archetypes and called it a day. Defensive stats also suck if you dare touch the higher difficulties, because you probably need 20 in-run level ups on defense to tank 1 more hit from the weakest mob, and until you reach that breakpoint, everything you invest into defense stats is effectively useless.

Grind is also unreasonably long. The first few unlocks is where reason ends. please enlighten me on why there is a playable character unlock that requires levelling up a total of 1,111 times in-run (one of our full easiest difficulty run nets about 40 levels so you only need to repeat that 27 times?????)

Multiplayer experience also feels actively frustrating. because for the love of god there is friendly fire. Like, wow, what? Considering that you can't aim your projectiles, the safer way to not kill your friend in coop is you and your friend try to never see each other on screen. Which bares the question - how is that any different than two people on single player separately? With two players we already can't sometimes manage, what's the mayhem gonna look like with a full 4 man squad?

As it stands currently, I really can't recommend this game.
