Exploitative design makes the game frustrating to play without spending money, but the amount of money required to have fun goes above reasonable limits.

The gameplay was basically nonexistant, which would be the issue if the story was good, but it isn't. The main plot is an unsatisfying shaggy dog story. The writing is usually decent, but just hamfisted enough that I couldn't get into it. No replayability. I don't want to claim that Firewatch is a terrible game... but it isn't very good.
