i do think it's fun, but there's just way too many technical issues from being horribly unoptimized that often enough make the game genuinely unplayable for me. frame drops (fairly consistently down to sub-0 fps in big teamfights, especially on newer maps), memory leaks, crashing, and none of this has gotten better, only worse, every subsequent patch. it's unlikely any of this will be addressed for quite some time, since the devs seem more keen on adding newer and newer content (thus making these issues worse and worse).

this is just one of those games that sticks with you after you play it, and it's kinda hard to describe exactly why.

but, the way i see it, this game is a gorgeously grotesque cacophony of one's worst anxieties and fears. everything about the game is stunningly perfect, and the sum of its parts each contribute on their own to achieving a whole that is terrifyingly bleak, existential, and erratic.

each part is perfect, and in my mind, go as follows:

the visual design in the unique art style and blend of colouring are done in a way that is wonderfully unique - in no small part because we're to view the world through our protagonist's eyes. we are a part of her, but we are not her. we're a passenger, but not one without influence.

the ost in this game particularly is just as beautiful as it is existentially horrifying. a lot of it is just uncomfortable. some tracks are just this distorted white noise - a spiraling of harsh sounds that makes you feel empty. at other times it's almost eerily peaceful; in no small part due to the chords or synths or the whole arrangement just, having a rare sense of order.

and the writing.. the way this game is written? is perfect. milk-chan's thoughts, the way she talks, the way we talk? it is all perfect. it's engaging, it makes us concerned, it makes us anxious, and sometimes even when it feels borderline nonsensical, the wording is treated with such care and precision, that the most incoherent of thoughts can begin to make sense and resonate with you in your mind if you let yourself just take it all in. it's hard to do the writing itself justice, but that i think is to be said about every single part of this game.

each part that goes into this game is an experience i cannot understate. i think this is the most passionate i've been about reviewing a game in quite a long while, but it's for good reason. games like this are hard to come by. because every single part of it feels so heartfelt. even amidst all the horrors and anxiety - you get the sense that everyone involved was so passionate.

i can't really recommend this game enough. there's nothing else really quite like it, and i'm not sure there ever will be.

this has quickly become one of if not my favourite game of all time. i heard a lot about omori before i decided to pick it up, and i was even familiar with the artist (omocat) for actually way before i heard anything about the game - buying a bunch of their stuff since way back in 2016. so naturally when i heard they'd made a game it came as a bit of a shock, but i've never been much into RPGs or anything like it so i put it off, until i decided to just give it a shot a couple years past release.

and my god, this game is just about flawless. from start to finish. everything from the art style, the storytelling and character building, to even the combat and entire soundtrack, is carried with so much care and finesse, it actually still blows my mind just thinking about how much of it is pulled off so perfectly. it has i think a few minor flaws and stumbles a bit as it makes its way toward the finish line (particularly when it comes to the good ending) but it's very minor stuff all things considered.

long story short, with as little spoiling as possible, this is an absolute must play. my first playthrough took me a full 24 hours of playtime, but i was doing a bunch of side-content, reading every bit of dialogue, and struggled a bit on a few bosses. which i'd entirely recommend doing as the side content is so charming and fun to do and figure out. but you could just as easily breeze through the game in i'd say about 18-19 hours maybe less if you were insistent on finishing it asap, but this game at least in my opinion, deserves your time.

TL;DR this game is an indie masterpiece. it will make you cry at certain points and you will so easily fall in love with the characters and this lovely world that omocat and her team has created.

one of the most fun games i've played. it's pretty flawed in some aspects, but if u can forgive those flaws then u have a really great game here. post-iceborne this game became somehow 10x better. even though it's a bit old now i still can't recommend it enough.
