One die block
Every player in this guide are considered to have same exact stats and skills, unless told otherwise.

This is a very basic one die block situation. Both players have ST3 and the're are no assisting players.

If one of the players had one more strength, they would have two "white" dice block.

When player blocking has equal strength with the defending player, blocking is done with one die.

The two dice block

This is a basic two "white" dice block for the Amazons. It is a two "red" dice block for the humans, if he does block either of the amazons, amazons coach gets to pick which die to use.

This happens because all the players have equal strength (ST3) but the human player is alone and has to face the amazon he's blocking AND one assisting amazon.

Every player assisting adds +1 strength to the defending / blocking player.

So for the humans, he is considered to be blocking a ST 4 player (amazon ST3 + ST1 from assist).

Vise verse for the Amazons, if either one of them blocks the human, they will be considered to have ST 4 because of ST3 of the blocking amazon and + ST1 from the assisting player. Thus, again, they would have two "white" dice.
How to obtain two dice blocks in a line?

Now this is a typical setup when two players line up their players.

Everyone from either of the teams will have one die block EXCEPT for the amazon Player 2 if she blocks the human Player 4.

This is because ASSISTING player cannot be in any OTHER players tacklezone, EXCEPT the player being blocked.

Player 2 will have two "white" dice block on Player 4 because both Player 2 and Player 4 have equal strength (ST3) AND Player 1 is assisting Player 2.

Player 2 will be considered to have ST 4 when making the block.

Remember, tackle zone is the zone of one square surrounding every player (unless they have lost it due to some skill).

Why others have one die blocks then?

Player 4 will not have two dice block to Player 2, because he has no FREE assisting player. Player 5 is in TACKLE ZONE of player 3 and he cannot assist. Player 6 is in TACKLE ZONE of player 3 and he cannot assist.
Why is strength important exactly?
Strength matters when you face opponent with more or less strenght than what you have. ST3 player can two dice block ST2 player in picture 1 situation.

In picture 2, if the lone human player had ST 4 and both amazons had ST 3, amazons would get only one die block. ASSISTING player only ADD +1 ST, no matter what his or her ST is.
Guard
Guard is a skill that can help or bother you a lot. Characters with guard can assist defending a block or blocking even when in other players tacklezones. This complicates your life a lot, so always be aware of your opponents players with a guard and their position.

It's always good to remember that while guarding players help others in their block, player without guard won't help always them. Usually the best tactic is to take out the player with guard to solve blocking puzzles.

Ending words and math(s)
So, loaning from the great site for new and old players alike, http://bbtactics.com/, here's a quick guide showing the chances of a turnover from a failed block, ie. the possibility of epic failure:

Without skills and rerolls:

33.3% with one die
11.1% with two dice
3.7% with three dice

Without skills but with a reroll:
11.1% with one die
1.2 % with two dice
0.13 % with three dice

With block or wrestle skill:

16.7% with one die
2.8% with two dice
0.5% with three dice

So, don't be afraid of one die blocks if you have the block skill. Otherwise, have that reroll or a two dice block (or better) unless every third block you want to give up a turnover.

I hope this help you guys out, and as always, have a great match of blood bowl!

Great advice. I see way too many players try to block with only one die when it is absolutely not necessary.

A rule of thumb is to never block with only one die unless the outcome is worth it (attacking the ball carrier), even if you do have the block skill and a re-roll. Remember, in a 1v1 situtiation and you player goes down, that gives them an apportunity to run over and give +1 to one of their rolls.

The less you gamble, the more you win blood bowl.
