Headstart guide: Ok, got this but what should I do?
By gty and 1 collaborators
This guide will help most players to get into the game and have a better first experience. It's not just focused on new players, it provides a good overview of the game for everyone. I'm one of the devs of the game so I believe this will be of incredible help to everyone. I hope you like it.

Menu/Settings

The main menu is quite simple, you can only start a new game or get into the settings.
  • New Game: Head into your adventure and start a new game.
  • Load Game: Head back to your adventure that you were playing previously (you have 3 save slots)
  • Settings: You may change sfx/music options, change language options or redeem gold codes (which will eventually can posted over our facebook[facebook.com] or here at Knights of Pen and Paper Community Hub).

Achievements
The game has 46 achievements and a few of them are currently a secret. Most of them you will probably earn by just playing the game.

But some of them you'll have to push your way too hard to do it.

New Game
Whenever you start a new game you are required to choose from a few characters and classes to start your adventure. You will be needed to choose 2 new characters. If you have enough gold, you may buy a few more characters as well, it's really up to you. You may only have 5 characters at a time.

Characters and Classes is one of the sections for this head start guide, so if you have any doubts about this, make sure to visit the section.
Characters and Classes
Characters are related to the person playing the RPG, it's more like the person you invite to play with you and will be sat on the table. Each character has 1 different ability that will help you to start the game. The character is the first option (the player ability is the first square at the left) and you may change them by clicking the left/right arrows.

Classes are related to the role that character will have in your adventure. It's more like a "job" with specific spells. Each class has 4 different spells that will help you through your adventure. Once you level up, you'll choose which spell to raise its power by 1 and then it goes on and on. The class is the second option (the class ability are the other four squares) and you may change them by clicking the left/right arrows.

Remember that you may combo abilities with spells. For example, you will prefer to choose a character with a bonus attack to the Rogue class instead of choosing an extra health, it'll strike harder at the beginning.
Blacksmith
The Blacksmith is available at some certain maps. It works in a specific condition, once you give him Grindstones, he'll earn more and more XP (experience points). While he earns XP he will raise his level and raise his Success Rate.

This is the Blacksmith interface:

It can be accessed by this icon:

This is the Grindstone:

You may choose if the Blacksmith is going to upgrade your armor or weapon and the price is the same for each of them. The higher the level of the items, the higher the cost of that item. The higher the Blacksmith level, the more upgrades will be available. And the higher the Blacksmith level, the higher your Success Rate will be.

If the Blacksmith fails to craft your item, your gold is lost. Be careful, the items are powerful but it comes at a high price.
Items
Items are upgrades that are found by finishing quests or after battles, they can also be bought at the Enchanter store. These are instantly moved to your inventory but watch out! There's a limit of 20 items that you may carry, it's better not to keep your inventory full.

Each character has 4 slots of items that can be equipped as you'd like by drag & drop into the item slot.

You may sell the items for a few golds when you're in a town/village by drag & drop into the opened stash. If you're not in a village, you will just drop the item by drag & drop it to the trash can.
Map
There are currently 2 kind of maps in Knights of Pen and Paper.

The first one is related to the world and has lots of places to go:

The second one is related to the dungeon and there are a few different maps but they work in the same way, you move and discover what happens in that point. After finding the key, you may proceed to the boss and then you may go back to the world map.

Things kept between games
A few things are kept after you start a new game or change games between saves. These things are:
  • Gold

  • Classes unlocked
  • Shop items (table items)
Walkthrough at first quests
This is a walkthrough of my own personal opinion of one of the too many strategies to play. I'll choose the first characters and classes based on what the standard game has and all the options you might have as well.

By the start of the game you may only choose your friends (characters) that will start the adventure with you. The two first characters are for free and you have to choose them to move on.

As my personal opinion and I was an addicted to MMO's, I prefer to start the game with a good combination of tank/heal roles to keep everyone safe and focus the damage on whoever has more mitigation or higher hp.

So I got the Grandma Paladin as my tank role because of her extra threat (the higher the threat, the higher your character is meant to be focused in combat). Her threat is not yet calculated because she is the unique character sat.

And also I got the ET Cleric as my heal role because of her (her, it's a female et) awesome spells support spells.

Ok, characters set up? Here we go! Click on the flash exclamation icon. It flashes when a quest requires an update (when you're ready to deliver, or when you're ready for the next stage, etc).

By doing that you'll provide the initial of the storyline and I encourage you to read and have fun. Then the last dialogue is shown with the quest objective.

So let's go, first quest, I'm ready! You'll be asked to battle ~at least~ 2 soldiers as listed in the quest objective. You may battle as many soldiers you feel like but once 2 are beaten you may proceed with your quest. Remember, you may battle 1 at a time or you may do it in the same time. Be careful! That's where the difficulty goes.

As you finish that battle, you'll be prompted with a victory screen like this:

And then, proceed with the rest of the storyline until you reach Default Village. You'll finish the quest and woorray! Good job. You're almost with enough money to handle your third character and the more characters you have, the better experience you'll get. I encourage you to get all 5 by the time you can.

Proceed with the next quests, remember, whenever you're choosing a new quest to do, a Star will be pointing out the Campaign questline like this:

Get that quest and handle with all those rats!

Then make sure to do the bat quest:

At first you're only able to place 5 monsters at a time and have 3 characters at a time. You'll need to get items from the shop. These are pretty cheap and you may buy them quite easy with no problem at all. The items are: Crown and Holy Grail. The item shown at the screenshot is the Holy Grail. Once these items are put on the table they will keep even on another saves (like the gold) and you will never need to buy them again:

Once you get that, you'll be able to make battles like this one, 7 at a time! But, WATCH OUT! These battles dangerous so take care.

Get the next quest and head to the Den of Devil to proceed with it.

Make sure to click those shinning stones at the left side to gather Grindstones as well:

Get your new quest and proceed with it:

As you finish this quest, I encourage you to rest yourself at the tent icon.

Once you feel that your health and mana are in a decent value, make sure to continue the quest. A follow up will appears as you were crawling over that dungeon. Your first boss arrives:

Handle with care and make sure to finish the questline at Default Village right after.

There you go, assuming that you've went through this walkthrough you won't get any problems with the rest of the game. There's a lot to see and play but you get the basics and is now ready to move on.

By the way, there are unlockable classes and here's a hint about these 6 unlockable classes. Get this quest and proceed with its storyline to unlock a powerful one:

This is a list of 3 quests, in the third quest you may buy all the carrots from the store to finish it.

Good game everyone!
Threat System and Shield Icon
I can explain how threat system works so you have a better idea how "Shield" icon works.

For example, if you have a 5 characters party setup like this:

1-2-3-4-5

character 1: 2 threat
character 2: 1 threat
character 3: 4 threat
character 4: 1 threat
character 5: 2 threat

This means you have a total of 2+1+4+1+2 (10) threat. In other words, the game has a list of possible targets for the monsters to calculate whoever they are attacking, and the list consists of:

character 1
character 1
character 2
character 3
character 3
character 3
character 3
character 4
character 5
character 5

They have multiples of themselves in that list directly considering their threat. So, whenever the monster will pull 1 result from that list, it'll be whoever the monster is attacking. In other words, a combination of threat like that means:

character 1: 20% chance to be attacked
character 2: 10% chance to be attacked
character 3: 40% chance to be attacked
character 4: 10% chance to be attacked
character 5: 20% chance to be attacked

That means whoever has more threat, its LIKELY to be attacked. And you can control the threat level by using abilities/equippable items that increases/decreases your threat to a minimum of 1, except for the "Shield" icon. Lets suppose your tanky character is the character 3, that has the higher amount of threat of your party and they are 1 hit away from dying. If you use the Shield, which is "hide/defend" mechanically speaking, you're setting that character for their whole round to set their threat level to 1. That means your new threat list would be:

character 1: 2 threat
character 2: 1 threat
character 3: hiding
character 4: 1 threat
character 5: 2 threat

Or, in other words:

character 1: ~28.57% chance to be attacked
character 2: ~14.29% chance to be attacked
character 3: ~14.29% chance to be attacked
character 4: ~14.29% chance to be attacked
character 5: ~28.57% chance to be attacked

If you continue to iterate like that to avoid taking damage and you also shield your characters 1 and 5, your new threat list for the round is:

character 1: hiding
character 2: 1 threat
character 3: hiding
character 4: 1 threat
character 5: hiding

Which means:

character 1: 20% chance to be attacked
character 2: 20% chance to be attacked
character 3: 20% chance to be attacked
character 4: 20% chance to be attacked
character 5: 20% chance to be attacked

Basically, the shield sets that character to 1 threat to the full round, that's why if you shield all of them, you have the last example's outcome and no one is really safe because their threat level is all the same and they all could be hit equally.

I've added a section in the guide for Threat System and Shield Icon if you want to check it out. I explain it with different examples of how it works.

I REALLY wish this game had tool tips and/or explanations of basic things. I've read multiple guides and none of them have explained what hitting the little shield icon does for you. I mean I can make an educated guess that it improves that character's defense that round but does it also lower their threat? How much does it increase it? No one talks about it. Same with how to actually USE the grindstones. Do I double click on them in my inventory? Is there a spot on the blacksmith's screen to put them in? Everyone talks about what they do, no one talks about how to do it. I guess it's obvious to everyone but me?

Can anyone tell me if the magic stat works towards all skills or just the obvious magic skills? I cannot find good information on what each of the stats actually does anywhere online.

About the 20 item limit. This is only true for the variety of them, 'cause you can have more than 1 of the same item and it sums up with a x2/x3/xX.

This guide misses the best advice to new players : Take 100g of your starting gold, and buy a +6500 experience potion for your favorite hero out of the starting items shop. Go into that hero's page and drink it. You'll gain about 6 levels, and be ahead of the curve for the beginning of the game, allowing you to fiddle around and get your feet on the ground.
