Introduction
The Return of the Obra Dinn
A Catalogue of Misery and Misfortune

Welcome to my guide, I will take you through this 'Insurance Adventure' with as little hand holding as possible, if you are really stuck, check the hidden spoilers as you go along. The main point of this walkthrough, is to generally help you by nudging you in the right direction. The more you are stuck, the more hidden info you can reveal until you can work it out for yourself. Why? Because this game is pretty tough, and not unfairly so either. Even if you complete this game in your first run, you can guarantee there are things you will miss, just like I did!

So, as you go through this guide, I will be describing each memory in the order you would most likely come across them. You can miss some events and experience the game differently on each play through. These memories will be described as is obvious, and any further hints and tips will be hidden in spoilers, the most obscure ones being last. You can unveil them as you need to.

It may be optimal for you to play the game as you want until you go through each memory. When you have seen all of them for the first time, it will start to rain and the ferryman on the rowing boat will call for you.
General Tips and Starting Scene
Some general tips for you though:

- Take your time. The game doesn't hold your hand but it does hurry you a long as you go from connecting memories. Don't be afraid to carry that shaking pocket watch as you keep investigating every little bit you can see.
- Explore Everywhere. In some memories, you can go up and down stairs between decks. Lots of things can be easily missed if you don’t explore. Doors can be opened with more info potentially inside.
- Use the book completely. Don't forget the book has a lot of info. A map noting each room, a numbered crew manifest with ranks and nationalities. Sketches of the crew. Transcripts of things spoken, and more.
- Anything can be a clue. Clothes, voices, names, items on the ship, where people are, who they're with.

Anyway, let's being and start a new game.

You can skip this section as it's pretty impossible to fail here, but just in case...

You are traveling to the Obra Dinn, a ship that set sail in 1803. Yet it only just re-appeared 4 years later in 1807, in Falmouth, England. You will learn that you are the Chief Inspector for the East India Company, required to assess the ship for insurance purposes. After gaining control, turn to your right, move forward and left click to begin climbing onto the main deck.

Once on the boat, you cannot really do much but have a look around, do so, familiarize yourself. You will be given a bit of time before the bloke on the rowboat yells for you. It will feel like a long time, but like the game in general, you'll need to take your time to soak up all the information in this game to make the correct decision.

HOY! IT'S TOO HEAVY!

You'll notice a skeleton on the top deck and soon after the guy in the rowboat will call you over. Go back down onto the boat, just like how you climbed onto the Obra Dinn and collect your book from your box by left clicking the box. You'll have to skim through it, so just hold D to do so and then left click again to collect your pocket watch. There is a reason the game wants you to skim through the book, though. You'll see what's inside, how the chapters are blank and that some pages have a location on the boat circled around. For example, In the Lazarette on page 103. These will lead you to the corpses on the ship that start memory chains.

Memento Mori, Remember Death

Now you can start the game proper, climb back onto the boat and head for that skeleton, your pocket watch will appear in your hand. As you left click, you'll hear a little tune before heading into the memory. You can left click again to cancel before it ends should you wish.
Chapter X - The End. Part 1
"Captain!"

X "Open the Door..."

"Kick it in!"

X "...lest we break it down"

X "...and take more than those shells."

"You bastards may take..."

"Exactly what I give you!"

Your first memory starts with looking at someone, you'll see they are firing a flintlock pistol. If you turn around, you will see someone being shot, and someone next to them recoiling. First of all, don't get too hasty. There is nothing you can really do right now but take a good look around and see what's going on. If you are observant enough and explore, you will notice a fourth chap in this scene. Eventually your vision will close, and the book you picked up will appear to show you the scene. Now the fun really starts. As you play, you will learn the next few mechanics, but still...

Top left you will see "Who is this? How did they die?" alongside a (for now) blurred photo. If you click this, and select: "This unknown soul", you'll be given info on how you don't have the info needed to identify this person just yet. If you click on "1 Memory" you'll be told about how you can view the memories this person was in and how to navigate to each one as well as bookmarking them.

For now, we can at least put in the book how they died, so chose "Shot" and then "Gun". Pressing escape to go back to the book, we have the option to revisit the log of what was said in the bottom left, if you do so, notice that there’s an 'X' to the left of some lines, this will tell you that it was spoken by the one who dies in this scene.

Back to the book, in the top right this time, you will see the deck plan. The X is the location of the corpse, and the footprints are where you are standing and facing right now.

In the bottom right of the book, you will see who is in this scene, the relevant people will be highlighted in the sketch. You will be looking at this an awful lot throughout the game. You will notice that here, all the faces are blurred except one. (Move all the way up and down, you don't want to miss the dude at the top!)
You will have enough info by now to identify who this is... but if not, don't fret, you will soon find out.

Exit the book, and you will hear a noise, which is the sound of a door unlocking. This is the door behind you where you will exit the memory. You will hear this a fair bit throughout the game too.

Get a good look around here, do this in every scene, as it's fairly easy to miss info in some memories. In some you can miss that there’s another deck you can move to as well.

You will find that the door in front of you, into the captain's quarters is now open to you. Head inside, and find the next corpse to enter your second memory. You may notice that this door is blurred, this will also happen a lot too, to indicate that the memories have unlocked it.
Chapter X - The End. Part 2
X "Where are they? Must be in here someplace"

"They're at..."

"...the bottom of the sea."

X "That's a lie"

The second memory shows you looking at a fight between two men, you'll soon see that the chap on the left as had his throat cut by the chap on the right. Have a look around, don't worry about finding everything, you need to wait for the scene to close and for the book to appear before we can really have a good look about.

You may notice, that this chap's portrait is still blurred. Nothing difficult so far, you know how this guy has died, so enter it into the book. Once you are done, head for the door. Make sure you have explored every nook and cranny, this is essential in the game in general. Although there isn’t anything else here of note, be sure to get into the habit of it.

What you may have missed: Not really a spoiler, but a nice intro into how I intend to write this guide. Head outside the ship, out the back from either the left or right side of the captain's quarters to see the earlier guy with a knife in his teeth, taking another route. We won't know who he is until quite a bit later on. I've seen some people miss this guy, so just making sure you don't either!

Once you have left the memory, you can see another corpse here in the captain's quarters, this is your third memory which continues from the second. By all means though, explore the boat (although there is really nothing to see that you haven't seen already) if you wish. If you check your book you might see something unusual, but as it's very unlikely you won't, I've put the following behind some spoilers. Please consider only checking them after you've unlocked all the memories if you want the full experience for yourself.

Go to the book and check the sketch... If you look at everyone’s faces, you might see two of them now not blurred who we haven't even seen yet in any memory! Under the "Justice at Sea" sketch look at the chap in the top middle who has his left hand on top of the huge steering wheel. Why do you suppose we can tell who he is?

The next one we can identify right away... are from the initial’s "E.S", at the very bottom left of the sketch. Who would do that? There’s only one person on the boat with these initials
Chapter X - The End. Part 3
This third memory shows someone hitting another crew member with the spear the last guy thrusted into his shoulder. Even after being stabbed with a knife! Again, have a good look around, you have plenty of time to do so before the scene closes and the book fills.

When you do regain control, you will see a door has opened to a room where you can see a woman in bed. All you need to do here is enter how the bloke died and we can move on, there’s nothing of note here otherwise.

When you have left this memory, go into the new room that has now opened. You will see two corpses, one on the floor and one in the bed. You can chose any at this point, but for the purpose of this guide, I will detail the next memory of the skeleton on the floor. Especially since going to the corpse in the bed will lead you through a chain of memories which are part of another chapter entirely.
Chapter X - The End. Part 4
X "Abigail."

X "Your brother. My Friend. I shot him..."

X "...dead. I'll be with you..."

X "...soon, my love."

X "Please forgive me. For Everything"

You will see a guy, sat on a chair who seems to have shot himself. Though even before that, you will probably still be thinking more of the audio you just heard. This scene will clear any doubts you had about what has happened so far. Have a look around, and let the book fill itself in.

You should now be very positive that the death in this scene is… that of the captain

You should be able to work out who the woman in the bed is by using the transcript and a bit of common sense, one thing to note is her… Double-Barrelled surname.
The one dying here will also admit to shooting her brother, as will happen a lot in this game, those that die won’t be identifiable until later on, when memories like this give vital clues. Make sure, that when you come across something like this that you go back and fill in what you now know.
Identifying the woman will help identify our very first corpse. This will potentially give us our very first filled in guess. Once you have done so, the game will give a short tutorial letting you know that the fates of the crew will only be confirmed in sets of three. you can also keep fates that you are very sure about incomplete so that if you have one or two events you are unsure about. Make your best guess, then complete the fate you’re sure about. If you are right, you'll find out!

There’s nothing left to do here, so leave the memory by the same door as the previous ones. The book will take you to the beginning of Chapter X. You will see 4 X's appear. They show how many people died in this chapter. When you see '/' this will mean they disappeared, but you will see this later.

The 'tutorial' is over at this point and the game will open up more. You should have been informed of many of the mechanics. But I've listed these and some other things below:

Blurred photo's mean that you don't know enough to identify the person. Visit more memories or look for more clues in existing memories.

Below their name and above their portrait, you will see triangles, either 1 or 2 or 3. These indicate how difficult it will be to identify. Leave the 3 triangle ones for later, though some can be identified if you are very, very observant and knowledgeable.

If you zoom in on someone, and press tab, you will jump to the sketch and where they are on it.

Outside of a memory, when you have your pocket watch open, you will jump to the scene they died in within the book, by pressing Tab.

An interesting note on the pocket watch. After you have viewed a memory, if you go back to the relevant corpse, you will see the pocket watch clock show you which chapter, and part, the memory is about. For example, if you go back to the very first corpse at the beginning of the game, you will notices the hour hand on the 10th hour (Chapter X - The End) and the minute hand over the 1st hour (Part 1).

Some corpses you will see skeleton's for, which are most obvious. Other deaths you will 'unlock' and see their 'ghosts' which will be blurred. All corpses are not easy to find, in these cases, there will be flies flying around part of the corpse. This will guide you to the location of a mostly or completely hidden corpse. (Such as in the cargo deck for chapter 1, or at the window of the first mates cabin). Remember the pages in the book that are blank but have "In the Lazarette" Circled? Those are where these skeletons are found.

In the sketches, people in similar roles tend be grouped together. Such as the topmen, seamen, officers and their mates and so forth, but not 100% of the time. This will also tend to occur in memories as well.

As events are played out in reverse order as you go through the memories, you will re-visit memories a lot. Especially as some conversations would be better placed in other memories, but that's all part of the fun!

Thoroughly explore each memory as you can, it is very easy to miss information as you are dragged through each one.

Back to the game, and we already have our next memory, the woman in the bed. This will start the next chapter.
Chapter VII - The Doom. Part 8
X "Martin!"

X "Where is the captain?"

"Have you lost your mind?"

"Get Back inside!"

X "I want my Husband"

X "Where is he?"

"He's below deck"

"Come here!"

This is a very busy scene. You'll see our victim here, whose death looks pretty brutal. This person’s cause of death will be one of many in the game where there are multiple answers accepted, look at what is hitting her is your main clue.
Have a look around and observe what you can until the book fills out with this scene. The text here is important in identifying someone… Martin, who she is talking to. Who do you think it is?

When you leave the book, you will encounter the first time your pocket watch starts shaking, left click and you will find a corpse that stands out brightly among the scene to lead you to the next memory. Be careful, as this mechanic can lead you though memory after memory quickly. Be sure to do what you can before heading into the next memory. Though you can always go back, you may forget some things as you go along.

Before you go to the next memory, back towards the captain's quarters, you will see a man looking on in horror next to two females. This is the first time you see these people. The two females are very hard to deduce their identity so make a note of them now. They are two of the only 4 females on board. One we know of already, one we will later (As Formosan royalty) so you may be able to tell who these two are already by their names in the manifest... more on this later

Please also note the two chaps that are tangling with the kraken near the middle of the scene, a chap in the hat has his arm coiled around by one of the kraken's tentacles and another is sticking a spear into it. Make a note of this, as it is how one these people will die, and one disappears. It's the last scene we see one of these people in chronologically.

On the opposite side of the ship, you will see one chap dragging another, in half. This is where we are taken to in the next memory.

If you are doing well, you can figure out three fates already by this point. The Captain, The first mate and Abigail, the Passenger.
Chapter VII - The Doom. Part 7
When outside of the previous scene, click to send the little guiding cloud towards the next corpse that we just mentioned earlier. This will happen a lot in this game. It took me my third play though, but If you’re not looking at the 'cloud' it stops moving and waits for you, also the song with stop playing. It's a neat touch.

I won’t enter the transcript of this, it's pretty gruesome after you move back and really see what's going on. Therefore the cause of death for this poor chap should be obvious... He's torn apart by the kraken.

The portrait for this guy will become clear as well, how can we tell who this guy is?

Well... He's on the top deck, so he's no ordinary seaman.
Noticed something unusual about him? How about those tattoo's he has? Very unique, no?
Still unsure? Maybe you just want to keep playing? Okay... There's only a certain region of the world where you would get these, this poor bloke is the only one of his nationality on board.
Still stuck? Alright! Those tattoo's you'd only get from a certain part of the world, not in Europe or Africa. But in the Australian continent.

Again, the pocket watch will shake and we will be taken to our next memory. Follow again and let's head into the next one.
Chapter VII - The Doom. Part 6
"Get to the main bitt, quick!"

"Hold On!"

"Hold On!"

"Throw it!"

"Throw the powder!"

Firstly, a bitt is the anvil looking thing on the side of the ship you would wrap mooring lines around to keep it at port. (or google it for a better description!) Still, you’re mostly looking above that, at this wonderful view of how this guy just died. Take a good look around, follow the rope. This is the only thing you really need to know here. Though you may learn more when their portraits become clear They are wearing uniforms, mostly. That's a hint. And by the bang... you might have worked out how they died.

Still, head for the door when you’re ready. The deck below has now opened up for your exploration! So let's go.

The first thing you may notice on this desk are all the cannons scattered around. Once you go closer, you will come across a skeleton underneath one. This is our next memory, but if you walk over and continue, there’s another you can find too in a room. But we will get to that in this guide later as well as other things to note on this deck.
Chapter VII - The Doom. Part 5
"What's Happened Here?"

X "Sir! Loose Cannon!"

"She's Heeling over!"

"Find your Footing!"

First thing you will see, is this poor chap between a wall and a cannon. Lots of stuff going everywhere, some tentacles out of a window and some bodies. Behind you, two chaps on the stairs. No-one can keep on their feet it seems.
You might be able to guess the cause of death here, but that's it.

Your pocket watch will shake in your hand, explore some more if you like and left click when ready. Find the next corpse and click again. Follow the trail and we will head into the next memory. The walls of the ship have taken a hit from something. Hmmm.
Chapter VII - The Doom. Part 4
X "The Fuse!"

Woah! This is one memory where you may be a bit thankful there isn't a more realistic graphic style here. See the tentacle and the cannon firing. Notice how there are three chaps manning another cannon? Where are the three people on this one? Well, one's already dead as you can plainly see... Another is being crushed by the cannon. and... Where’s the other guy? You'll get a hint pretty shortly, as your pocket watch is going off again. A note that some questions in one memory will be hinted at in the next, as is the nature of the game. You can make your deductions in the book as to the manner of their deaths. Shot by cannon, as the dead guy you can't see was behind the one you can, before the cannon went off. The culprit, can either be the beast or the one that lit the fuse.
Chapter VII - The Doom. Part 3
"Load!"

"Move by hands!"

"Aim level!"

"Ready!"

*Screaming*

"No!"

"Belay Spark!"

If you are wondering, to 'Belay', means to stop, or desist from. In this case, not to light the cannon fuse. Now you can understand what happened in the last scene, and why you may not have seen the partially bald guy’s corpse. Also, you may notice the cannon's fuse is already lit, uh oh. Apart from the obvious... One of these guys has a hat, there is a reason he is in uniform more than others, just something to think about There isn't much else here... There are no more unblurred faces in the sketch so we cannot say for certain who any of these are just yet.

We are done with this chain of memories, as instead of seeing your pocket watch shake, you can hear the door unlocking sound, so go through when you are done having a look around.

There’s only one place to go now, which is the corpse in one of the rooms on this deck as mentioned earlier. This is a good time to advise on using the ships map, it will tell you what room is for what purpose. Using the map in certain memories will give clues on who some people are.

In one room... Go into the room labelled "Stewards"
There’s a clue... The clothing hanging from the coat hangers.
This will... Help you figure out who the stewards are. Especially the right item, which will be most noticeable I never found out the proper name for this item unfortunately.

If you check each room, you will eventually find the skeleton, but just in case, look for the knife and splotches around the door on the deck floor. Go inside (Which room is this again?) and let's go to the next memory, this one starts a bit of a chain.
Chapter IX - Escape. Part 6
"Och no! You're Cut!"

X "Don't... leave me"

"Bear up, son. I'll stay with you."

X "Tell Pete's mother, I..."

X "I tried my best."

"Aye."

X "to pull him back... to save him"

"You tell her yourself..."

"Brennan! Bring the surgeon's kit!"

Gosh, this guy trailed a lot of blood didn't he? You'll see this guy in the next few memories crawling his way to this room. Why do you suppose that is? Because of his role maybe? You may have a clue to how he died... more will come later. And we got a name! Someone here is called Brennan. I'm assuming this is a common thing everywhere, but someone's holding their hand to their ear to hear well. Not that it really works but still... You may have worked out who the chap is comforting our victim here as well, if not another tip is the accent people speak, if you didn't catch it, check the transcript or you can revisit the memory later to hear the conversation again. Och! Who says that? Speaking of transcripts, what did the victim say? He also mentioned a name and saving him, what could he have referred to? We have already seen the memory! Check the memories the victim was in.
If you can't work it out... He tried to pull him back, with rope. The chap who exploded on the main deck.
This is one memory, where depending on your skills of observation, you can either take a lot from this one, or barely anything (Like I did on my first play through).

Once you are done, let's go to the next memory.

Chapter IX - Escape. Part 5

"What's all this, you damn fool?"

Remember, we are going back in time from the last memory again here. You might be able to pick up a clue relating to the memory we have just come from... The knife in the back of the last victim The death here should be obvious, and you will be drawn to the next memory, when you are ready!

Chapter IX - Escape. Part 4
X "Enough! The Captain cannot be trusted."

"You have a plan?"

X "Yes, we take a ship and sail east."

X "Trade wretched fish and shells for gold."

X "Huh? Who's there?"

"Mutiny! Mutiny!"

X "Fresh Bastard"

"No!"

Yikes! Another grizzly death here. This is a scene where you are best remembering this conversation for later. It's not terribly important as you can always go back and visit this memory again. you'll find you can go up to the main deck this time unlike the two before where someone on the stairs blocked your way. Once you are done, off we go. You can do this too in the next one, which I've seen some people miss.

Also, if you've already gone through all the memories... The Wretched fish and shells being referred to, are the Mermaid's in later memories and the shells in the box where others get their arms burned off from reaching inside. The shells are what all these terrible beasts are after.
Chapter IX - Escape. Part 3
"Let them go!"

Cause of death here is obvious once more. More interestingly are the ones in the little boat. Check the sketch of who is in this scene, some faces will be unblurred You may have noticed these two faces were unblurred on the scene of their previous appearance. Looking on in horror. If you try to identify them this way, you will be given a little tutorial on deduction ratings, showing you how difficult some of the naming of these people can be. Judging by the names in the manifest, there are only 4 females on board. One we know already (Abigail) and one is Formosan, her picture is in the 'Formosan Royalty' Sketch. So that leaves us with the last two... You'll be enticed to move on to the last memory and if you do, you may miss some more goings on. Come back if you like later on, I suggest you do as soon as you can. You can go below deck, this is a big clue! I'll explain why later so for now just see what you can work out.
Chapter IX - Escape. Part 2
X "Last one. Move quick"

"You'll not take the last boat!"

"Paul! Look out!"

"Stop"

"Let them go!"

"No!"

X "Damn."

Another rare occurrence of a name being uttered here, and this time our victim's face is unblurred. Like the previous few memories, not just one deck is available to you and you'll be taken to the next before you can really get a good look about.
I advise to go back to this one again later. This next memory will be the last in this chain.
Chapter IX - Escape. Part 1
X "Put me down! Let Go!"

"Easy now, you're in a bad way."

X "The squid! Where is my Frenchman?"

"The squid's gone. Your mate was torn apart"

X "Verdammt! The beast is dead?"

X "How? How did you kill it?"

"We didn't. It left with the storm."

"Captain came up from the hold."

"Said he chased it off."

"You should rest."

X "A curse like that..."

X "...does not lift for nothing."

Once you leave the book, the door will open to leave the memory. When you do leave, you will reveal the beginning of this chapter in the book. You'll see the 'X' and '/' Symbols. You may know what the X's represent, but the '/' shows those who have disappeared and are in the section of the book at the end of the chapter. We can try to fill in these people’s fates and names, though some will be hard to fill in. Even by the end they may be.

The more observant people will unpack a lot from this scene, but don't worry, go back to them as necessary and try not to tangle your train of thought up into knots. It can be quite easy to do so, for reasons I will try not to give away so easily. The difficulty here comes from the fact that... There are two sets of events happening in this chapter with one on each deck. The escape on the top deck and the mutiny below.

If you have left the memory, I'd advise to go back to it and gather more info. There’s a lot of conversation here to gain info from. Read the transcript. The victim asks for his Frenchman, bingo. There's only one, the Bosun's mate, which makes this bloke the Bosun. Also, 'Verdammt' means 'Damn' in German, there are no Germans on the ship, but there are Austrians.
Speaking of his mate... He was torn apart, so even though we can't find him yet, we know how he died which is worth noting for later.
As for how this guy died, well he is clearly missing an arm... You will need to go back to a previous memory to make sure here, he did have a tentacle wrapped around it.

You won't know this until you check the sketch... but there is now another unblurred portrait, the chap who exploded earlier in part 6 of chapter VII - The Doom. Remember someone saying something about telling Pete's mother he tried to pull him back?

You may want to revisit the other memories again. It will allow you to work out the chain of events, and help you deduce how one guy died.

If not already, go to the one we have just came back from, (Part 1 of The Escape) note where these people are in this scene and then go to part two and part three. Notice in part 1, a chap is coming out of a room? This is more info in case you need it to identify him. Which room is he leaving? This is where you will be going later for a new memory.

The chap emerging from the lower deck... is the one lingering outside of where our Bosun has just died in part two. In part two, make your way below deck to where we were in part 1. See the guy lingering outside? If you've kept tabs on how people have died so far... You'll have him as being knifed, keep this in mind for part three.
In part three, do the same and go below desk inside of the memory. The bodies to go back to parts two and three are on the top deck, remember?
Why is one guy being chased with a knife? This is where part 4 comes in, especially what people are saying as it really relates to this scene below the main deck. In part 4, you see the chap with the hat whose face has been shot off is... The culprit for knifing this, so far unknown, midshipman from part 6 This leads to part 5, and the part 6.

We should have deduced all the info so far that we need. It's actually possible to work out the fates of... 9 people by now. Or, we'll say... 6 actually, because where the escapees from the escape chapter escaped to, would actually need to have been guessed at by most people. Unless your incredibly observant... Remember who gave you the book in the first place? Where did he say you should send it after you are done?

Our first three: The Captain, The first mate, and Abigail.
Maba who was torn apart by the beast, the two female passengers escaping in the Escape chapter.
Where did they escape to? Check the map, or a previous spoiler...
Our torn apart Bosun, the midshipman who exploded and Henry who died in our second memory by the captain

Whew, that was a long segment. The story diverges here depending on which of the next three memories you discover first. Either, you realize that the first mate's room is now open to you (Via the blurry door as you exit the last memory on your right). Or by discovering the cow's skull mid deck to your right. The third memory is back up a deck, through a now open and blurred door and has a skeleton there. I'll start with the cow skull first.
Chapter II - A Bitter Cold. Part 3
"Take him to the carpenter's."

"Get him wrapped and see to the last rites"

"Hit 'er here."

"One Swing."

"Get through the skull and stun 'er brain."

"I'll cut 'er throat when you've done it."

"Here?"

"Yah."

"C'mon. Before she kicks up."

"You all right there, sir?"

"Never been on a farm, Charlie?"

"Mind your shoes now."

This is an interesting scene that kicks off a bit of a chain of memories. It has plenty of info that you can miss that will tie some stuff together. This is where you need to pay attention to what the people here are wearing. Specifically around the slaughtering of the Cow. All but one have scarves. One person refers to another as Sir. You hear a name, and should be able to tell who it is it’s the chap throwing up. There are two Charlies in this list. So the attire should be a tiny hint here. As 'sir' was said. You may assume these chaps may be officers of some sort.

One of the crew on the ship has to cut the cow's throat, this is the scene to identify him. Check the job titles of the crew manifest for the answer here

If you've been getting everything right so far, you can identify all the... midshipman at this point because... Charlie just threw up. Pete exploded earlier, which leaves Thomas as the chap who got knifed earlier and tried to pull Pete back before he exploded.

When you are ready, off to the next one.
Chapter II - A Bitter Cold. Part 2
"Some lung disease."

"Not consumption."

"Made worse by the cold."

"Will it spread?"

"If so, we'd all have it"

"They must've picked it up at the lascar house."

"I checked all hands just now, and everyone is healthy."

"And him?"

"What are his chances?"

"I gave him some laudanum."

"We'll see."

What good that laudanum did for him... Anyway, short scene here but the room we are in is a help here. All but the victim in this room are identifiable. You can argue which one is the mate and who isn't judging by their positions. Is the one on the chair the superior since the other guy is doing the work? Or is the other guy by the bed? Does the name of the Surgeon remind you about anything? Through the memories they are in you will work out which is which but... One of them gives you the book at the very beginning, so he must be alive. The other dude is also identifiable because... He was called out by name earlier, near the beginning of the game in the death of Abigail Not that you need to worry about identifying him here as he hasn't yet has his death or disappearance shown to you yet. With the people outside there are two groups. The two in the far corner who resemble part of the sketch in the book which will hint to their identities. The two surrounding a dead body. It's a good time to hint that people near each other can often be relatable to each other, they may be similar rank, role, or nationality, or something else. Have a look to your hearts content, and when you’re ready, let's move on.
Chapter II - A Bitter Cold. Part 1
"Stop your cheating!"

"Worry about yourself."

"Syed!"

"Syed, get up!"

"Drink something!"

Now, this is a another scene that as a lot of info in it depending on how observant you are, as a good few people can now be identified here and their portraits become unblurred. However, most have a high deduction rating meaning that they aren't easy. So don't worry if you need to focus on these people in other memories for more clues, or see if they appear in later ones. Especially if their fates are not available for input yet. Still, have a good look about before you read any further. Try and find them yourself.

Okay, done? Let's see then. First thing you will notice are languages spoken. The Russian and the Hindi (?). The Russians can be identified by them talking about... cheating and that they are playing a card game The big clue to a lot of detail in this scene are the hammocks. Get a good look at them, there are items near some too which are also clues. There are three people playing cards, and three hammocks nearby. One has a pipe in a bag hanging from it too Speaking of pipe's... He has it with him in an earlier scene, which is why his portrait is unblurred at this point and not the other two.

As for the four chaps surrounding our death here, one clue in particular will help you identify them all as their portraits are now unblurred. The tags on the hammocks. First we can identify the dead and the dying here. The one holding the lantern owns the empty hammock, which leaves the hardest one for last... You may have noticed that all four of these chaps are Indian’s of the same rank, of which there are only four of them on the manifest.

There is one last clue to be found and finding this clue will assist in a similar memory involving hammocks later. Someone's limb is poking out with a distinguishable feature.

The next memory is in the First Mate's room by the window where you can see the flies outside.
Chapter III Murder - Part 3
"On your toes, boys"

"Load 'er up! We best Push off!"

"(in Chinese)Let me go!"

""(in Chinese)Captain!"

"Slack the lifts, and lower the boats!"

"The whole crew will be on us!"

X "Give it up"

You can easily tell this person's death and how he died. There is a clue here to identify who this is, but you will have needed to view an earlier memory first and then had the observation to identify them from it as well. It's the one we have just came from.Also... You might recognise a female voice here... one that isn’t English... There is a chap here with a spear in his leg His face is unblurred, and has been since the very beginning. If you don't know who he is, what is he next to in the sketch? This is the second memory he is in.Also...You can identify a steward here, but only for the observant... If you don't know why... then you need to go to the steward room after this memory, then see the clothes hanging up. One of the people here is wearing such clothing. Last little nugget... The officer they serve might just be here, no?

Either way, you are dragged to the next memory. so when you are ready...
Chapter III Murder - Part 2
"Hok-Seng Lau"

"...you have been found guilty by self confession..."

"...of the murder of Nunzio Pasqua."

"No! He has done nothing wrong!"

"Miss Lim It is too Late."

"Quiet!"

"As Captain of This ship..."

"...and by the authority of the East India Company..."

"...and thus the Crown of England..."

"...I sentence you to death by firing line."

"Mr Wolff. When you are ready."

"Right sir"

"Ready men."

"Aim."

"Fire!"

Okay, so the first thing you see is someone being shot at. Have a look around before the scene closes and the book fills in. I've watched a lot of people play this game and they all see different things. This scene is a major jackpot for info.

What you may not notice is... the bullet trails from each gun... only one person actually hit's him

What you will notice, from the what is spoken is, that The Captain gives Mr Wolff the order to fire. Who is he? He might be giving out a hand signal of some sort perhaps?

You will need to come back to this scene later, especially if you visit this scene first before the one with the cow skull. Which is the alternative to going into the First mate's room first. As described after the Chapter IX - Escape. Part 1 memory in this guide. This is because a scene in that chain will reveal info to help you identify people in this scene.

When you are done, we will go to the next memory
Chapter III Murder - Part 1
X "Hello?"

X "Who is there?"

X "Who is that?"

X "Is Someone hurt?"

"Eh?"

X "Signor Nichols, is that you?"

X "What are you doing down here?"

"Hello, yes!""

"All fine here"

"Just, ah, sorting some things"

"Watch your step."

"Here, let me help you"

So, first view is key here, and the transcript will give you a good idea what's going on. Get a good look at these two men as the cause of death should be obvious. You can't see the weapon but it should be obvious.

As for the victim, check the transcript once the book fills out. What language is 'Signor'? As there is only one speaker of his language, his identity is simple.

Who is he addressing? This will tell you his attacker.

If you have been keeping up in this memory and the last, all three people here should be identifiable and the deaths should be straight forward. Remember this memory occurs before the one you have just come from.

If you have checked the Passenger cargo room, you'll see an odd effect from an item in a drawer here. This is your first opportunity to realise that... The similar effect in the distance when on the main deck is the same as this... Why? You may discover this later... This isn’t important to completing the game, but just helps to explain the events of the story.

Right now, there are two corpses available to us, they are easy to miss as they are tucked away. One is at the port walk, which is on the Orlop deck. The other is on the bow of the gun deck, this is where we are going to go next to finish the rest of The Doom Chapter.
Chapter VII - The Doom. Part 2
No transcript here, but you don't need words to help understand what killed this poor guy. His portrait is unblurred, if you can call it that. There's a reason you just see his initials here, it's not hard to deduce his name here either. He's signed the sketch so he must be...? He's also... The only one with those initials

There is more info here as you can see you have access to two decks here, so take your time if you like. A good few pictures now become unblurred here and you can identify a few more people. A warning though, they are nearly all a 3/3 on the deduction rating. You need to check the manifest, the sketch showing who is in this memory and realize something about the hammocks.

Firstly there are two chap's at the other end of the boat, if you have identified the one in the hat, you may be able to have a good guess on who this other person is.His clothing is also a big clue here, and a room you will find it hanging up in on the ship

Another is one of the Russians who is the only Russian in this memory, this is where you need to really check the Hammocks... and the tags on them and check who is in this scene which means a lot of book flipping. There is a reason he has a high deduction rating. If you check the tag numbers and come across 46, there's your guy. If you have a good memory... Didn’t' this guy kill someone in another memory?

There are two chap's sat at a table whose faces are now unblurred in the sketch, this time the hammock is only helpful for one of these people.

The next unblurred picture is of a person at the top of the sketch we have seen in so many memories. He dies at the beginning of the game nearly. To be able to identify him here, you will need a very good understanding of everything that has occurred until this point. He is sleeping in one of the hammocks here. They count as being present in the memory like our earlier Russian friend. He will be... the last guy in the hammock sleeping who you wont have an answer for at this point, hence the only option available. The guy in the hammock marked X we would have also already figured out in a previous memory.

Finally, there are some empty hammocks with a sword dangling from them, you may have a good inkling of who one of them may be but as they're faces are not unblurred yet in the sketch. Keep a mental note of this bit and head to the next memory.
Chapter VII - The Doom. Part 1
X "Let me on."

"Over my dead body you bloody Dane"

X "Eh? How's that?"

"There's no cause for trouble, boys."

"Get in the boat."

"Thought I'd forget? You killed my brother."

X "What? That was an accident! The ropes!"

"It wasn't his fault. I saw the whole thing."

"Lies!"

"I shoundn'a waited so long!"

"No! Don't!"

Ah, good, some hints already in what's been said. We have a Dane, of which there’s only one of them. The attacker is also unblurred here, he talks about his brother being killed which we will get to later. There are only two people with the same surname as well. The way to identify this guy isn't in this scene directly [Must confirm this]

Once you leave the scene, you will have filled in the whole of Chapter VII and you will see that 7 people disappeared in this chapter alone!

Let's go through this list and see what we can work out. The first chap's portrait is blurred. You may not have seen him at the point where he disappears and this can mean that the cause of his death can be hard to figure out. Check Chapter VII - The Doom Part 6 If you can't find him... He is at one side of the ship, starboard side. Though not actually on the ship...

The next three chaps on this list were all in the same memory together, recently actually. in fact, the very one we just came out from. You may need to go to check ship map, as you can use this to go through the timeline of which memories occur in which order. They disappear in a later memory so you may need to go through them and see if you can find which memory they appear in after part 1. Alternatively, one of the chaps who goes missing is only in 2 memories so far... Parts 1 and 7 of The Doom. And 7 is where you can see them and their boat being flung into the air by the kraken. The second memory will help explain their fates.

The second person on this list is unblurred now. Apart from the clue in the scene where he says another crew member has killed his brother, there is very little to identify time outright and you may just have to guess which one of the brothers he is until the game confirms this. He's also 3/3 on the deduction rating. This is how I believe you can make the deduction at this time... Remember the empty hammocks from Part 2 of The Doom? There was a sword hanging among three empty ones. One of these belongs to the Dane he murdered, one is for a Persian crewmember and the other is number 48. His brother is already dead, so this must be his.

Right, the fourth one in this list you can identify in a scene with hammocks around... he's sat next to an empty one. As for his fate. You will find him on the top deck of another memory from earlier in the game, you'll need to click on his section in the book, use the option to show the memories on the deck map and find the last one he was in. The Doom, part 8 He is... climbing the rigging with a tentacle wrapping around him... oh no...

Next, is a chap we will only ever see in two memories, his portrait is unblurred and if you overthink this it can really be hard to figure out who is (like I did). Despite that, you can make an assumption at the very beginning of the game where his picture is unblurred right from the very beginning. My take is that because of where he is on the sketch, he must be the helmsman. The last memory of him is in The Doom, if you check the option to show memories on the deck map. He's being lifted up in the air by the kraken... well he's no longer on this ship anymore.

The last person on this list has appeared in a few places, as his face is blurred you won't be able to tell who he is yet. We also can't tell how he died yet either, only when we learn of who he is will we be able to determine his fate. All will become clear later!

If you want to go to the next memory you can, however, there are some more unblurred faces at this point so the next part will be going through filling in all that detail.

If you skim through The Doom once more, you may catch the fact there are two new faces in part 4... That got shot by the cannon. For the chap in the hat there is only one other memory other than just before and after he died. In this memory, he is mentioned by name and is giving the order for the firing squad to fire.

As for the guy whose body we never even see after the cannon going off, he's hard to deduce. But again this relies on the hammocks, he's sleeping in one. Key this time is what's sticking out of the hammocks. The shoes, you'll only see them twice in the four memories he is in. Just before he dies, and when he is sleeping in the hammock.

Bearing in mind those hammocks again, two other unblurred portraits are... the chaps sitting part way up the mast at the time of Hok-Seng Lau's execution Like the last chap, their appearance is key here. He even sleeps near them in the same part of A bitter Cold, part 1. Go back between those memories to work out who they are. Don't worry if you can't figure them out, one of the china men in the group is still burred at this point too.

Two more people who are unblurred, one is the last Russian. Who will be identified by process of elimination if you have worked out who the other two are by now. Lastly is the chat in the sketch just to the right of the hanging Formosan being shot at in the sketch. You may work out who he is from where he is stood in the memory this sketch was drawn in. Behind his superior, near where he's stood in this sketch

That's all the loose ends tied up. Back to the memories now. There is only one place we can go, which is the corpse hidden at the port walk, you may find this earlier if you spotted and followed the blood trail between the surgery and the pursers office on the Orlop Deck.
Chapter VI - Soldiers of the Sea. Part 7
"They make for the lazarette!"

"Secure the hold!"

"Someone shoot the damn'd thing!"

This is a good point to note, that you have to remember you are viewing these memories backwards. So if you are wondering about how something happens, keep it in mind for the next in the sequence as your questions may get answered. After the sequence is over you can always view them again in the correct order.

You'll realise you can only move along the port walk here and peep through the holes. Some people you can't check against the sketch by zooming in as they're too far, which will make it more difficult to tell who kills him from this memory. Though you can use the sketch highlighting who is in this scene to deduce which guy. We can't name him just yet however. Make sure to get a good look through each hole here though, someone's hiding in a room. Use map and you'll be able to identify the guy.

You should surely notice the first time we see a new monster here, you'll get a better look at them later too, and they are pretty creepy.

Back to our victim, there’s three clues here to determine how this guy dies. You may see the first before you even enter the memory. That hole in the wall. Then there is the lines spoken and sound just before your vision returns.

You may notice his pictures unblurred as well, as a three rating it's difficult, yet the clues are there. Mainly because of the clothes he is wearing. You'll find them hanging up in a room, if you can tell which one that'll help a lot for identifying the others wearing the same. Thankfully, those that share his rank are of... Steward, have different nationalities each. You might be able to tell his nationality from his face. Or you can leave identifying him for later once you have identified the others of his rank.

Lastly, there’s one other unblurred portrait here, figuring out who he is will allow you to fill in more fates. Again, the room they are in helps. He's also been stood with the other person in other scene's, specifically the execution earlier of which the sketch is based on.

Make your observations, then we will go onto the next memory. There is another bloke I haven't mentioned as his portrait is unblurred. I'd say his attire and weapon are enough to give him away by now but apparently not!
Chapter VI - Soldiers of the Sea. Part 6
"I've got you."

"Don't move."

"I'll get you down."

"Give me that gun."

Give a good luck of the list of deaths to choose from on this one, many people will have the same fate as this guy. It should become obvious which one it is from the list. As for his identity, you can have him marked earlier if you worked it out from the cow slaughter scene. It's really the only clue you need here.

There's a chap not on in this scene whose picture in the sketch becomes unblurred, oddly. (I've been checking the entire time writing this guide on when people become unblurred. He wasn't unblurred in his last appearance, timeline wise or gameplay wise. It's the first in the disappearance from The Doom chapter. How you deduce his identity at this point is pretty impossible. All you have going for you so far is his voice (If you can tell who's talking which is also hard) and that he isn’t in uniform (Which means he isn’t an officer) After going back to the scene where is sleeping in the hammocks. He doesn't poke out of the covers like the other do, which may suggest he's shorter than the others of his rank he's sleeping near.

Still, we will go to the next one.
Chapter VI - Soldiers of the Sea. Part 5
No dialog here but a long scream. You'll notice it's not just a human ghost here but one of the crabs (minus rider) as well. I'm assuming that this is because they both die together at the same time here. No idea where the rider goes though, but our victim here is on top of him.

The cause of death here, like many others can actually be one of multiple choices. My first run I had the chap with the sword as the culprit. But you may notice that he's also... on fire? You can confirm this in the next scene.

When you are ready, onto the next in the sequence.
Chapter VI - Soldiers of the Sea. Part 4
"We're no use!"

"Burn it quick!"

Oh dear... A double death here, and you can see right away how they're getting killed here. You also get a better look at these crab riders as well! Creepy. Again, you can see our victim of a few memories ago crawling at the back. There's also a lantern being thrown. If you keep this effect in mind, it will help you later on to identify another fate that's tricky. Remember there's more to this memory than these two dying, so explore a lot.

There are also two new faces unblurred. One of the guys who die here, and our turban friend (Finally...) The chap who dies can be identified the same way you can identify a lot of people, he's only in two memories so far after all. Hammocks! There's something sticking out of it that can help you identify him, but unless you are reading a guide like this you can miss it so easily.Shoes! Also, if your marking everyone possible as you are going along... he is the last Chinese man left, so you don't really need to go back in this case to the hammocks

For our turban friend, there are a lot of clues here. His position in the sketch and who he is with. And their rank. His sword. Which was also hanging near his empty hammock while he was on the top deck. His turban. Lastly, where he is in other memories. On the top desk mostly, especially in later ones if not identified by now.

When you are ready, onwards to the desk above.
Chapter VI - Soldiers of the Sea. Part 3
"A Demon!"

"Out of the way!"

"Beat to quarters!"

"Enemy aboard!"

X "What's going on?"

"Stay back! It's already done for Nick!"

X "Come on, boss!"

"No, get down!"

X "Hey! Catch!"

Not much extra info here admittedly, mostly this just leads you back up to the top deck to the next memory. Your info here comes from the transcript. I believe the "En Daemon!" is Danish spoken by the Dane you most likely already identified. The guy who dies, calls someone else his boss, which would seem to be the guy on the floor nearby. You may have also heard a name as well. But... It's not the guy dying here. Even though you may think it is. Also, there are no new unblurred faces here.

Up to the top deck when you're done.
Chapter VI - Soldiers of the Sea. Part 2
"Heave!"

"Run!"

"What is it?"

"Bloody devil!"

"Another one!"

"Over there!"

Interesting scene here. Cause of death here should be obvious, his face in unblurred here as well and is only a 1 deduction rating. I have to admit that I'm not sure why it's just 1 when it's your first time playing the game, unless this is after you go through every memory in the game first before trying to identifying the crew. Only by judging his place in the sketch of the crew is the obvious clue. But the next memory will also help.

Also, a new face becomes unblurred who we have seen a lot so far who is by the crate looking on. You hear of his death before you know who he is. So you may need to backtrack sometime. His position in the sketch isn't helpful. His clothes may be though... People say his shirt is typically French but I'm not entirely convinced. He looks like he was overseeing the other seamen on deck, and someone was asking for "Their Frenchman" earlier in the game. If you can remember that far back. You may need to check the glossary to see what certain roles on the ship are to help too. Once you do figure it out, you can also potentially... fill in the fate of a crewmember earlier

Next memory when you are ready. This one is my favourite scene in the game.
Chapter VI - Soldiers of the Sea. Part 1
"Main sail, hauled up!"

"Secure the braces and lower the topsail!"

"Work fast, the wind is alive!"

Boom! This lightening effect is awesome and you’re on top of the rigging this time. This scene was just above the last one, so if you missed identifying the previous victim and the other chap from before, this will help.

There are a lot of topmen here, which should be obvious considering how high up they are. The cause of death here is also simple. As for identifying him, I wrote about it earlier in the guide, where the Formosan gets executed. There’s a trend with identifying the men from China... Hammocks and Shoes they all sleep near each other in one scene.

It can be possible at this point to have identified the cause of death and identity of all the people in this scene. As this is the end of the current chain of events you may want to go back and try to fill any holes. But it's also worthwhile to keep on going as you may get more clues to some of these people. Entirely up to you.

The cargo deck is now available to us, and we have the last three corpses to use the pocket watch on. We will save the one that causes the longest chain of memories until last. We are going to head to the bosun's store at the bow (front). On the cargo deck, facing the stairs, there are two doors. Head to the left one and you'll find some flies on top of a barrel.
Chapter II - Loose Cargo. Part 2
"Hoist away!"

"Lower away!"

This scene we don't have to identify who died, because it's a stowaway on the ship, but it's the next memory that’s important. Still, take a good look around, and notice who is here. This chapter is referenced earlier, remember the brothers?

There’s nothing new here, no unblurred faces and nothing to identify people with, other than noting the people in the upper decks working on this cargo being lowered.
Chapter II - Loose Cargo. Part 1
"Make way, coming through."

"Orlop stern, 'neath the tiller."

"Lower away!"

"Oy!"

"Wait! Wait!"

"No!"

"Down Below!"

Nothing different here than the scene before, except it happens just before the previous one and now we get to identify the chap who died and why. The cause of death is easy here, and the identity should be easy if you can remember back to an earlier scene referencing this chapter. Where he is on the sketch helps too. This is the brother that was killed.

For the next one. We are going to go back to the Bosun store, and enter the right door, facing the stairs. The giant crab here is our next corpse.
Chapter VI - Soldiers of the Sea. Part 8
X "Is that all!?"

Well this dude is a badass, his picture is still blurred, but we can still input his fate for now and should be easy to deduce. There’s no new info here that can help us, it just finishes off this chapter.

Two chapters left excluding The Bargain at the end. The last corpse, or well a leg at least. Is at the other end of the cargo deck hiding behind the stairs.
Chapter V - Unholy Captives. Part 4
"Keep pressure here."

"Hold him down."

"What madness is this?"

"Twenty years my steward and never a doubt on your sanity."

"Explain yourself!"

"Those ungodly beasts carry a curse!"

"Throw them back or doom us all!"

"Tie him up and put him in the lazarette with those... things."

"He may yet find his senses."

"Come on."

"Era darar! | You fools!"

"All's fine John. Been in worse spots I think."

"Where's the rest of his leg?"

Well, we know where it is, at the other end of this ship. (How? No idea!) This might help tell you which is the surgeon and which is his mate if you don't know already. One was being ordered to keep the pressure on. The cause of death here may not be obvious at first, but there is blood about and a weapon. The transcript is very useful here in identifying the victim. Careful as there is more than one john and also where is on the sketch.

There is also a new unblurred face here. Who can now be identified in this scene. Someone talks about a steward, and it may be easy to work out who this is, especially if you recognize his voice. Also the language spoken helps. The victim's attacker is the one being dragged away here too. It's the steward... particularly... of the Captain

Once you are done, head upstairs to our next memory.
Chapter V - Unholy Captives. Part 3
I can hear someone say "Look out!" here, but it's not in the transcript so I wouldn't worry. Most likely you have identified the victim here already, while at chapter two when two chaps died of illness. Go back later if you need to, check the hammocks and the tags. Still, they're transporting... something down, you'll work this out later. Technically it's still cargo they're transporting, but also falling works here too.

This scene is small, get a look around as someone looking on has now been unblurred. Along with someone else who are both now identifiable, Lots of clues including what they're holding and... check the map!

Lastly, there is a chap also unblurred here in the sketch that isn't in this memory, who can be identified by elimination, location in the sketch and his appearance. You may want to confirm this later though.

Onwards!
Chapter V - Unholy Captives. Part 2
"Clear the deck."

"Move the boats astern and throw the bodies over."

"Watch you footing."

X "Hey there. What's this?"

X "Give em' to me and I can fry us a solid meal, boys."

"Careful now, take it slow!"

X "One tick gentlemen."

X "There's a pretty shell here."

X "Let's have a look."

"No! Get back!"

OK, first of all... when you work out what these things are later. You wouldn't want to eat them. More on these shells, which will become important later, this scene kind of hints to it too.

Still, you can work out who it is by the dialog, remember the X in the transcript means it's the person dying here talking. The cause of death may be tricky, not exactly clubbed but kind of. Struck, more like it.

Again, explore this scene as there’s more above deck. Some officers are grouped together and two dead bodies which are our next stop.
Chapter V - Unholy Captives. Part 1
"Lift this out and take it below."

"What the hell is going on?"

"What do you know about these things?"

"About the chest and your dead friends?"

"What are these monsters? Where are they from?"

"You must tell us everything."

"This is your fault!"

"The shell must be protected!"

"We will all die!"

"He talk about a shell."

"Very dangerous."

"Shell? What shell?"

Some of these chaps had a close shave, though for two, not so much. You can't identify one person here as their picture is unblurred but their position in the sketch is your clue here. As for the other guy, He is identifiable, but there’s nothing solid to mark him out individually other than process of elimination. There are small hints in other memories as to his rank at least... Such as where is in the scene, who he is with and where he is on the sketch

You've encountered the method of their death before and it should be simple here too. As for the rest of the sketch, everyone can be identified at this point. What they are doing and where they are should give you little hints. One person is speaking Chinese and isn't the victim, who might it be? Judging by the conversation, perhaps near the captain to translate?
Chapter IV - The Calling. Part 6
X "Ahoy!"

"They're back!"

"Get the captain!"

X "Ahoy!"

"Recover the boats!"

X "Wait! Don't shoot!"

X "I have treasure! I yield!"

"Hold your fire!"

Now this is a very interesting chain of events here, and we get to walk on water! There are only 4 people in this scene and one becomes unblurred. The victim we know has been shot, that's obvious, but his attacker is still blurred. Remember to fill this in when we later identify him. The victim can already be identified if you have already gone through the third chapter.

The guy on the top deck can also be identified in another chapter, this one doesn't give any new info. Check the cargo deck memory by the bones of another’s leg, if you haven't worked out who he is already.

The last person, who can now be identified, Is in a certain location on the ship, use your map. Use your other clue gathering methods to find out who he is. What he's wearing, what he's doing in other memories? He's also the last of his rank to be identified if you've been following this guide.

Get a good look at the boats, and go to the next memory when you are ready.
Chapter IV - The Calling. Part 5
"Are you there? Miss Lim?"

This, and the next few are important in the story with regards to the shells and why they are dangerous. At first it can be hard to tell how this guy dies, there are two accepted answers here. The effects coming from the chest and his arm might help, you will have come across this earlier. The game also accepts... Poisoned. I guess this is because the box is filled with quicksilver

You cannot identify him here, and there’s very little else of note here either, other than the shell. Again it gives off an odd effect, where have we seen that before? Why the other chap is hauling these things onto the boat is anyone's guess so far. But keep going.
Chapter IV - The Calling. Part 4
"I have it!"

"Hold on!"

Get a good look here, this will further help you tell how the last chap died. In this one, we should be able to tell who the victim here is but not so much their fate, at least yet. Notice the other bodies here as well. Our victim has been named on many occasions so far, but if you haven't caught on, check other scenes she appears in.
Chapter IV - The Calling. Part 3
X "O'hagan, are you still breathin?"

X "Can you row?"

"Help!"

X "Nichols! Sir! Shoot them for God's sake!"

The speech gives a lot of info here, two names to go off, and he calls Nichol's sir. Common in these memories is that important info for the current one can be in the previous or next memory.

A hint to this person's fate... is in the one previous memory This is also the same for the previous memories victim here too as you get a clearer idea of their fate in this one.

One chap looks unbalanced here? What's that he's dropped? You can use this to... Identify him in earlier scenes.
Chapter IV - The Calling. Part 2
"Mother of God!"

"Keep rowing!"

"They are here!"

"Beng, the chest!"

"I see it!"

X "Give us a weapon!"

"Miss Lim! Stay Down!"

"Pick up the oars and row, you fools!"

What a good throw! Also, we have a name here. Should be easy to tell who she is referring to.

This scene's victim's death is clear here, his identity can also be confirmed, especially if you know who the rest of the people are and it was hinted to in an earlier memory. He was asked if he can still row.

The languages spoken here can help, at least one of these people was Russian. Another chap has been grabbed by a beast, keep it in mind. When you are ready, let's go to our last memory.
Chapter IV - The Calling. Part 1
"Keep course due east."

"We'll reach the Canaries in 3 days."

"You packed enough stores?"

"Aye, sir. Checked and loaded um me self."

"Good. Stay quiet and alert."

"If the wind picks up we've no chance against the Obra Dinn."

"Miss Lim, are you all right?"

"Yes, I am ok."

"But the chest. If must not fall into the ocean."

"If the monsters come, you must stay down!"

"Aye, shut it up."

X "They say strange things!"

X "About monsters!"

Well, this chap seems to understand Chinese before he got killed. Again the method of death here is obvious. His identity can be deduced from earlier scenes. His attire should also help identify him from a certain chapter. Hammocks and shoes!

Nothing else here really to help identify anyone. Once you leave this memory you will see that two people disappeared here.

The first chap with the pipe, His last appearance was in an earlier memory... Looking like he was about to fall out of the boat. The pipe is a blue clue to his identity, to help... The hammocks yet again come to our rescue.

By now, this second person can be identified through process of elimination. Though there are many opportunities in previous memories to identify this chap. He was also Grabbed earlier by a beast

Once you leave the book, you'll hear thunder, and it will start to rain. This means you've seen all that there is to see. All that's left to do is fill in the rest of the book. Don't forget to fill in those whose fates were cause by another crewmember that you couldn't identify at the time.

Remember to view memories in chronological order, explore everywhere, and take your time. By the end, you'll discover the last 4 fates in sets of two instead. When you’re done, the game will tell you. The last chapter will be available once you leave the boat. Navigate back to the other scenes in this guide if you need to. Uncover the spoilers for stronger hints.
Game End.
One Week Later.

The next part is interesting as you get to view the finished report on the Obra Dinn, Whichever fate you found for the crew will affect what is written here. Read it and we will go to the next bit. Interestingly, the ship sinks in the storm when you left. I wonder how? You know what happened to the ship the last time a storm happened? Abraham Akbar can be fined £40 if you name him as the culprit to the Mr. Wolf's (gunner) and George Shirley's (seaman) death by cannon. I felt a bit bad actually, not his fault the kraken grabbed the cannon after the fuse was lit!

One Year Later.

Enjoy the scene here, and we'll jump into the final chapter.
Chapter VIII - Bargain.
Chapter VIII - Bargain. Part 5

"There you are."

"Collect your things, we..."

"Where is the key?"

"To that door? Gone."

"Damn."

"There's no time. We need to go."

"Right."

"In you go."

"What are you up to?"

"Nothing good."

Now you realise what's in the package your given. It's part of this monkey. Which raises all sorts of questions. Still, you have two bodies here, one is our next memory.

Chapter VIII - Bargain. Part 4

"A third shell!"

"Captain didn't toss them all!"

X "Leave it. Help me lift this."

X "Stop! Wait!"

X "We're to set you free!"

X "Give it the shell."

"Eh?"

X "Do it!"

X "Hoist it out."

X "To the main deck."

X "Throw it over."

X "Lock the door when you leave."

"Get the tail, boy."

X "In return..."

X "...the ship..."

X "...the Obra Dinn..."

X "...see it home."

More story here, and a familiar effect incomming from the shell the beast holds. We can now say what happened to this chap. You should know this is the third mate by now. And he's spiked.

This time it's one of the beasts that takes us to the next memory.

Chapter VIII - Bargain. Part 3

"I'll kill every last one of you monsters."

"Withdraw the kraken!"

"Or I will kill you all!"

A simple scene, setting up more story. Someone’s holding the shell. He was thrown in here in an earlier chapter.

Chapter VIII - Bargain. Part 2

"Call it off damn you."

"This is your kraken."

"You brought it here."

"Send it back!"

Just more story here really. Nothing really to add!

Chapter VIII - Bargain. Part 1

X "What's this?"

X "Quicksilver!"

X "God in heaven!"

The last chapter, and the last death. If you haven't placed his name, he should be the last one left. He's the captain's steward He dies the same way that the Formosan previously did. Quicksilver is mercury by the way. Though I don't think it will burn your arm to the bone like in this scene. Perhaps the work of the shell inside.

Still, once you've placed the cause of death with his name. You've completed the game. Congrats! Enjoy the credits, and thank you for reading this guide.

Whoops! This should be corrected now.

All your Chapter VI (6) segments are incorrectly marked Chapter V (5). You should really fix that.

@Mitchell

You blame it all on the captain. Every death is because of the captain

One thing which I am perplexed by is why the victim in Soldiers of the Sea part 3 is blurred after this memory. You can hear that he has an American accent, and he calls someone else boss. The only two Americans on the boat are in a pair and one is subservient to the other.

Thank you for this, i have just completed the game correctly identifying everyone and their deaths. Perfect guide for this game as it doesn't give too much away but nudges you in the right direction, and helps with the things that are hard to see (like the rowing boat being thrown in the air really near the start). I went through it all on my own a few times but this really helped keep my sanity and stay on course (bloody footwear!)

~Nice guide, ty for the effort.

One small thing - in Chapter IX - Escape. Part 2 you can spot four (4) people in the boat - if you go to the fore of the ship, he's perched on the back winching it down.

No idea if this helps but it's easy to miss.

In Chapter V - Soldier of the Sea Part 2 the reason why the victim had a low rating is because of the previous memory "Stay back! It's already done for Nick!" i.e Nick has already been killed by the beast. With that in mind as you view Part 2 you simply have to find a name which could be shortened to Nick.

Just in case anyone was wondering! Thanks for the help with everything.
