We still have "clusterfuck of players with diffrent amout of skill" and you could "play competitively but also has space for those who wants to chill out, get goofy or even be friendly" before. It was and will be forever. It is not because of server searching system, it is more because of players.
But what about ACTUAL UPSIDES of pubs and casual? Man, pubs had A LOT of them, there is probably-not-full list of them: https://test-steamproxy.haloskins.io/groups/returnpubs/discussions/0/3020122487784584032/
Today matchmaking is comfy, perfectly balanced for any type of player whether for friendies, average players or even for epic gamers.
TL;DR: Matchmaking, unlike Quickplay is stable, comfortable for all, balanced and there's no point coming back to the 2010 version of pubs.
