The recent Steam releases my have a problem when downloading depots. If you find you have this problem, please try use this tool: https://github.com/SteamRE/DepotDownloader - which can be downloaded from here: https://github.com/SteamRE/DepotDownloader/releases

Please comment below if you need more info on how to use it.

You'll need to edit the depotdownloader.bat to be something like:

dotnet DepotDownloader.dll -app [appid] -depot [depotid] -manifest [manifestid] -username [yoursteamusername] -password "[yoursteampassword]"
pause

Replace all the square brackets and contents with what fits for your depot/username.

Please be aware that downloading from that link technically wouldn't be legal as it is copyrighted material being distributed without permission. If the Mods or Devs ask, I will remove the link from my guide.
That said, the game is pretty much unplayable without downgrading your version which is why I included the link so feel free to decide for yourself. The link will just make it a lil easier, and quicker.

Press [Win]+[R] to open the Run menu, then paste the below and click [OK] or press [Enter]:
The Steam client should come into focus and you should also see the console tab appear.

*Alternatively, you can paste the same command in a web browser's address bar and accept the prompt*

The version we are downloading is a build from March 29, 2018.
This version was previously considered most stable but some people have found the 2013 build to be best. The build IDs are at the bottom of this guide

Runs these commands in your new console tab to start the download:

- Content
- Bin
*either previous versions required brackets around the manifest ID or some people have needed it in the past. Had reports from users saying opposite things.

It will take some time to download as Steam doesn't zip the package in any way. You'll know the download is running if you navigate to your downloads section and see your current speed is more than 0 bytes/s.
When it is complete, you will see something like this (though you'll have to see two 'complete' messages for each different package):

Navigate here: *Your path my differ slightly with a different drive letter or some other changes*
You are now in the folder that contains your two packages for Magicka.


Create a "Magicka - Fixed" folder:



Then copy all the files from the two depot_xxxx folders into your new "Magicka - Fixed" folder:

Now copy or cut your "Magicka - Fixed" folder here: *Again, your path may slightly differ*

And now you have two Magicka versions. One with the latest build, one with the old. This is just an easy way to stop your build auto-updating though there are alternate methods from the guide mentioned in the "Credit" section.

Finally, you likely want a shortcut to access the rollbacked version of the game. You can either add a Desktop Shortcut or add it into your Steam Library as a separate app.

Desktop Shortcut
Inside the "Magicka - Fixed" folder:
Right click on Magicka.exe, then create a shortcut on your desktop like shown below.


With this, you can now just use the new shortcut, "Magicka.exe" to launch your game!
That shortcut can be found on your desktop!


Steam Shortcut
In your Steam library, at the bottom left, select "Add game>Add Non-Steam Game".
Click Browse and navigate to the "Magicka - Fixed" folder. Select Magicka.exe and click Open.
This takes you back to the Steam window. Make sure you click "Add Selected Programs".
This version of Magicka should now be in your Steam Library.

Find the new Magicka app on Steam. This will just be called "Magicka". You can identify the new version but selecting the app without launching it. You will see no artwork or other Steam specific features like shown below:
Right click on it. Open the properties. Rename it to indicate version number or any other unique identifier.


Once your game is running, you should see at the bottom left that the version is 1.5.1.0

Please note this method does still run the game through Steam. Multiplayer does work, though possibly will have ever so slightly more crashes (for the clients at least).

If you still have issues, be sure to install the dependencies as it says in the link below (use the dependencies in your normal Magicka game folder, not the "fixed" version since that one won't have a dependencies folder). Also, be sure to check out the other link below which has some additional troubleshooting methods. :)

It would be great if the devs either opened these old builds as options for Steam beta builds or if they let us post the old game files from the cloud so it is easy for people to download, though without their permission, I couldn't do that :/

I thought I'd document the crashes I get while playing through on 1.5.1.0. It seems playable, just a few crashes you still gotta deal with. You seem to return to checkpoints after a crash so it is just like you died anyway.
