Starting out

So you have gained the position of commander, what do you do next?

1. Research field tactics from your bunker. this is the first thing i do when i hop in the chair. it allows you to build your armory and research different things, most importantly being advanced kits which allows your team to use the previously locked siege weapons.

2. While field tactics is being researched, you should be moving out of your base, usually towards prime with relays to get a forward spwn up for your troops. this and field tactics are the most important two things to do at the start

3 Field tactics will probably be done researching by your second relay, now build your armory. you may be out of power, you dont have to build a powerstation just yet as the bunker gives off enough power to get started. you may need to power down your starting mg turret to build it however.

4. After the armory is built, research advanced kits as soon as you have the funds. researching advanced manufacturing for better turrets is usually a good idea but sometimes not necessary right away.

5. You will now definitely need a powerstation to continue your advance.

6. You now have the essentials out of the way, keep building forward, supporting your troops with spwns, supplies, and turrets.
Tips for true success.

1. Communicate with your team! tell them your plan of attack, ask them if they have a good idea of where to go. they are your eyes on the battlefield, and you are also theirs. Using a microphone is definitely the best way to communicate but if you do not have one. type! which reminds me, you need to hit the team chat button on the user interface for the chat to show up. it is hidden on default. make sure to read the text, not everyone has a mic.

2. Always build forward powerstations. you need to have redundant power, if the enemy team destroys a vital relay from base you want to still keep power maintained at your front lines. building forward power stations will do this for you, i make sure to keep building them as i advance further up the map. they will be a hot target so make sure to put defenses up near them.

3. Forward spwns. Spwns are your best ally in this game, build many of them. Your team can't hold the front lines if they have to keep running from the main base.

4. Use your flanks! don't just push up towards primary. All the maps have different sides to vitalize and attack from. Get spwns on all the flanks for the best results.

5. Default Spwn. I know some people don't like it because it can interrupt you from spwning if in the middle of the countdown. But i love them. They tell your team where you need them the most. In some cases your team isn't aware or isn't listening, so throw up the default spwn and part of your team will always spwn there. This is great for when you need guys to defend in a hurry and also helps you call out where to go. ( "go to the default spwn and attack")

6. Supplies. Some commanders will say just die but a lot of times you just need that one shot to finish off a vital relay or something else. Dying gives the enemy team time to go and repair all the damage you have just done. I always try putting supplies around the battlefield usually near my forward spwns. Build them behind cover though, as they are easily destroyed.

7. Turrets. machine gun turrets can be useful right at the start of the game to maybe hold down prime, but after the other team has siege they become rather useless. Instead just save up a little more resources to build an advanced turret. Rocket turrets are great for anit-personnel, and sonic/flamethrower turrets are wonderful at taking out structures. Place turrets behind corners and at the entry ways of buildings to keep the enemy from coming out. Try not to build them in the open. Protect your vital buildings with them. i guess i should note that mg's are also somewhat useful in combination with rockets, and also behind a forward powerstation to keep those pesky engies and bbq off of it.

8. Extra armory. If you lose your armory your team loses the ability to use advanced kits, and you lose the ability to place advanced turrets. If you have the extra funds during your push, put an extra one down. Put it either in your main base or up with a forward powerstation and base. Putting it forward allows your team to resupply at it and also change classes on the fly.

9. Artillary and radar. I don't usually build these things unless im having a real tough time breaking through into the enemies' base. These are also great tools for a defense.

10. Auto-repair. You can click on a building and have it repair automatically. Using this will take a small amount of resources but it's well worth it. I also use this while my buildings are still being built, helps the health gain faster therefore making it less vulnerable while building.

11. Commander abilites. These are mostly a waste of resources. The only times i would really use them is if im going to lose a vital building before my team can save it. It's better to lose 2000 resources than say lose a powerstation (3000 resources) and losing power to your buildings. The other instance i find it useful is if your siege is attacking the assembler or bunker and enemy engies are repairing it too fast. You can lay down some poison and clear em out, allowing your siege to finish the job.

12. Get out of your bunker. If you see an enemy taking out a vital relay or capturing a secondary or anything. Get out of the chair and take action! If you are low on resources and have nothing to build at the moment, get out and help your team collect resources, siege, or repair.

13. Don't turtle to early. Lots of commanders lose their forward position and basically give up on advancing altogether. Do not do this. I know it can be very frustrating rebuilding something over and over again. This is just part of the job. Keep supporting your team til the end. Keep getting those spwns up!

:steamsad:

A note on #12. It is extremely useful to jump out of the bunker and go for a little tour. Look for problems your team might have in using your transport gate network. Feel out how the battle is going from a first person perspective. Stretch your legs and put your feet in the boots of a soldier to find out how to improve your build.

This guide assumes the reader has already finished the tutorial, and knows how to build relays. A very common mistake is to build many power stations in base. The error message for no power relays is the same as for not enough power stations. Know the difference! Your power levels will be shown in a moving 4-bar gauge on the minimap. There will be more than one if your buildings have been isolated by losing relays.

This guide means nothing if no one listens to what the commander says, and that is usually what happens in every match, a shame this game is now dead, there is but one server and its still full of the same toxic people that do their own thing and dont listen to what the commander tells them

I'm glad you found commanding easy but it seems to be a real challenge for most people new to the game. The starting out part of the guide is vital to do. This game doesn't play out like a normal rts game. The biggest challenge unfortunately is, when someone does step up for the first time they are probably going to be going against a long time player who knows exactly what to do.

Hm... Just like BF2/2142 commanders. I think, that kind of experience may be helpful.

@whiterabbit
there used to indeed be weak points in the consort buildings however a couple people and myself have done some testing and this was patched out. the siege weapons seem to do the same damage vs building for each team now no matter where you hit it. (distance for empires' may still effect the damage done) i forgot to test that.

It seems that Nuclear Dawn wiki has been removed and thus loads of information seems lost. I only found bits a pieces of information regarding weak points in buildings, and it said only consortium has them. Is this true?
Overall, great guide and I would like to see more

you can make a control group of any building or group of units by selecting desired structure or unit and then hitting ctrl-x (x=any number you choose.) it will then show up on the side of your screen where the squads are and will also become selected when you hit the corresponding number. i usually do ctrl-1 for assembler, ctrl-2 for bunker, and ctrl-3 for armory. ctrl-4 is nice for grouping artillary.

when someone does the requesting a supply, a little blinking indicator will show on the mini map, if you miss where they said it, you can ask for them to repeat or ask for a specific location. Keeping them by your forward spwns should usually keep the team supplied.

Hey,
is there a way to use the assembler options with one button without direct clicking on the assembler it self, cause sometimes i´m (as a commander)far from my base on the map and i click somewhere else or something and i can´t chose any option without going back to the base and choosing the assembler. one more thing how to know which one needs supply if i missed who said it? and how to know where he is?
