Your starting group is not that important as most of them will be replaced with better alternatives down the road. But yes ranged assist is very valuable. And you should have atleast one of your 6 characters be healer. Personally I have two melee with high HP/Armor. These act as triggers for ranged support. One of they is heavly armored and has a solid critical counter mutation. The other is a wearbeast with colossus mutiation. I'm aiming to have critical awareness on all my 3 ranged attackers to dispatch as many enemy damage dealers as early as possible. Last stand mutation in combo with the mutation that triggers your focus twice in start of game gives your ranged a much higher change of surviving spike damage.
