I appreciate your suggestion, though I always enjoyed the vanilla game. Obviously there were some bugs and some annoyances. But I've always been pretty fortunate when it comes to this game, as I haven't really experienced many annoying bugs like the ones you describe.
I also think it's difficult to give good suggestions, as I haven't really played this game much in the past few years. And only occasionally came back to it briefly. So there's not really much that comes to mind that I would like to see fixed.
Although there was one thing that kept bugging me throughout it all, and immediately came to mind upon reading your comment. That's the 'insane' trait, which characters seem to get at random. It's a pretty severe trait that seems to be meant to only be given in rare cases and mimic a character lose his mind.
But I've had several campaigns where multiple generals (I'm talking 5+) got this trait, and it just became very annoying. So I would be in favor of removing this trait, or restrict its occurrence to one per faction (like the Legendary traits).
When it comes to balancing issues, I actually think the game is really well balanced between the various difficulty settings. In Easy difficulty the AI mostly leaves you alone, whereas Legendary really is far more hostile. And in terms of the combat AI, it does have its exploitable weaknesses, but I don't see that as a problem. The AI can break rules we can’t, so it's only fair that we get to break rules the AI can't ;)
In terms of bugs there are 2 minor bugs that come to mind.
1) in sieges by sea your units can't set fire to towers or attack the gates. This really limits your tactical ability to approach by sea and land units outside of the city to open a 'back door'. There is a work around by landing most units on the coast and wait outside the gate, to draw all enemy units to the wall, and only land 1 or 2 units in the city to capture the gates from the inside. But it's much more work, and doesn't work in every coastal city map.
2) The switch governors bugs, where the game crashes if you switch governors. Like the other one, there is a workaround by removing the governors first, and then assigning each to the other city. For this one the extra work is mostly in having to explain the workaround in the forums when people bring the bug up again.
Not sure if any of this can be modded, but I thought I'd mention them just in case.
I never claimed my way is the only way to play. It's just that over time I've noticed a lot of people who struggle with things like maintaining loyalty, or which followers to pick. So I decided to share my own thoughts on the follower system in case people find it useful.
Because although my method is definitely not the only way, it has proven its effectiveness multiple times.
And as far as I'm concerned the the top level bonus of the priest is by far the strongest in the game. Weakening enemy armies without engaging them has saved me countless times, especially when it comes to the large end-game armies. Having extra movement doesn't really help there.
