What I learned is to make good use of various defenses.
I figured what I did wrong was that I kept on using bullet hives, feather wires, and Tremormines (the mines in my opinion are kind of useless). So, whenever the bots would tech up towards tier 2s my defenses would get destroyed very easily (damn those ferrets).
To counter this, I would use balloons for better range and vision, as well as using the Drumfire Cannon (in my opinion, you only need one as it has a high range that can protect the 2 entry points the enemies can go through).
I also followed the tips the user below me gave, it's very helpful. All you need to do is take the gristmill as soon as you start the game, and turtle up until the bots are unable to break your defense, then you finish them off with whatever mobile units you have on your army.
You have to rush to get the second gristmill immediately (with your first 60 food), since you will never have a chance to claim it again once you start getting attacked.
You have a narrow window to get 1-3 hives set up before 1st wave, and setting them on the ramp first is essential, as they'll get free hits in while some enemies focus the gristmill.
Then you have to build a few hives and two fences to the south just in case, a farm or two to accelerate funds, and then start amassing hives at the north ramp. And hoping that they won't send a large army south. And if you ever lose more than a few buildings you won't catch up again unless the enemy is almost starved by then.
The Deadbones rush was super easy thanks to Puff Ball's seed and tactic. Apparently achievements only unlock at Army Size 6 !!
you'll wanna place the squirrels in the mill zone across from the enemy spawn, and you can take pot-shots for free against any spawning spots they set up (so long as they don't spawn anything before they die). after you kill off most of their early stuff with at least 9 squirrels, set down moles so they can take out the enemy main mill and any spawners/defenses they have set up. was fairly nice for me, cause they had lizards and doves as their cheap guys (and I drained them of meat by destroying whatever they put down).
