Even though this game, FF7, is a dearly beloved game. It's one of THOSE games, these types of games either don't do cloud saves...Or in this case, the cloud save that Square Enix uses for it is ancient. - Just as old as the game itself. So, it doesn't sync and save as well as it should.

The second thing is that this is an old game, some of these games aren't updated to fit with the modern standards (Which is the reason for the above.)

This guide will show you how to do a manual save and a few other tips.

Save Folder

Some of these tips require you to go to the save folder where your game is located.

Type in "windows + R", this will get bring up %USERPROFILE%\Documents. Look for the "Square Enix" folder and eventually the "FINAL FANTASY VII Steam" folder. Go to the user folder. That's where you'll find the save files, like save00.ff7,save01.ff7 and etc.

Saving Locally

Copy and make a duplicate of the save files and store them in a happy place new folder where accidents won't happen.

Square Enix Cloud Servers

Now this game uses the Square Enix Cloud, which are infamous for losing save files randomly. I say randomly, because, there's no telling when it will glitch out and not save your progress. - It can happen at the beginning part of the game or when you're near the ending.

It's best to disable it and begin a new game.

How To Disable The Cloud

Sometimes, it's just a tiny simple method that doesn't require you to recall your trigonometry lessons.

Log in to your SE account /while you're basking in your new account's glory (If you're a first timer) and before you get distracted by SE's awesomeness. Go to the account settings, that's where the linking accounts are located and login with Steam to link the Square Enix account.

The second method is that once you're in your Square Enix account, go to the Options and disable the launcher's cloud for FF7 from there. Remember, this game doesn't use Steam's cloud save system.

Appdata

Tip: This location is probably the same with the other Windows versions.

With mobile it's this, go to the Menu, tap Save and click on the file to save.

The second method, to configure the auto save, just go to Menu and then Configuration. This will auto save whenever you're hopping around the world map, after a battle, and saving progress during random times.

Sync?

One can sync both the PC version of FF7 to mobile and vice versa, but it's basically a manual sync. So, you have to do all that file save transferring sync yourself.
