Although, at first I would guess the same, but since you are at D6, it doesn't make sense - in Metro 2033, you find D6 to be empty and, if I remember correctly, with no dead bodies inside.
If those guys scientists were there, where did they go?
How would no word about D6 got into the metro from them? There were only legends, if they found some real people from D6, it would be bigger.
And why did they leave no trace?
My conclusion is, this is happening in 2041, after D6 got shared with other parts of metro, situation was stable, and scientists had enough energy and free time to try out these technologies.
