1) The walls are op, upgrade them fully
2) Upgrade builders and structures ASAP
3) Advance by placing the walls first, right among the enemies, they will focus those instead of your bugs
4) Build spawners right next to the new walls so that the builders will instantly repair them and halt the enemy troops
5) Use wasps with the upgrade that makes them spurt out 5 bugs on death. Along with the explosive upgrades for all of the bugs. Upgrade influence and speed and send the wasps forth.
6) Use selective breeding and do not unlock more bugs than necessary, since you will get higher penalties from selective breeding. Swarmer, builder, titan and wasp were enough for me to finish the game
7) You can retract your upgrades individually by clicking on the those that have no subsequent ones obtained
8) The artillery is great. Get that one early and build in the back
9) The builders explode for fun, leaving goo behind, for faster construction, deactivate the "gooing" (lol)
You can get to the Wave 50 for the achievement using the advices in my next comment as well. But I'd suggest upgrading the artillery and the walls first.
Also very good for pushing, as they can spawn 5 swarmers when they die, and they can cost only 15 nutrients.
Builders are also required for anything past the basic levels. You would always be running out of nutrients otherwise. Artillery is also good (in amounts more than 5) if you have an un-moving front-lines, as it's easy to hit a still target.
Walls are good to pair with boom slugs, because the walls get shot instead of the slugs and the slugs deal massive area damage.
