My use usually places a barge near a few islands. When I need some supplies (either from banked materials or fresh production batches), I task my nearby barge to deliver the supplies and then return to a position near to the islands again.
When performed correctly, this allows for more logistical flexibility with large supply networks, essentially combining preemptive ordering and some minor micro for looped barges. Additionally, this reduces the number of barges necessary to fully supply a hungry carrier as not all islands need to be serviced repeatedly.
