Smooth Mouse Look (Minecraft's Cinematic Camera)

Beskrivning
Smooth & floaty mouse input.
Many of you will see the title and immediately know what this is. It's an acceleration filter on your mouse input, with a short attack and a long release. And it's probably best known as "Cinematic Camera" in Minecraft.

Origin
In fact, this addon truly is a faithful copy of Minecraft's Cinematic Camera, replicated exactly from its source code. You can use it just how you would in Minecraft - pretty useless in most gameplay scenarios, but helpful when you need to record some quick first-person footage and you want it to look like it has slightly-more-than-zero production value.

It's most useful when you need a stabilized or smoothed first-person take, like when panning over a scene, tracking a target, moving around, or any combination of all three. That was the scenario I had which led me to create this addon.

How to use & Customization
Open the Spawnmenu, click on the Options tab, and find the Smooth Mouse Look section.

Basics

On the main Settings page, check the box to enable Smooth Mouse Look.
  • Use the Floatiness slider to control the strength of the filter.
Low values like 0.2 are subtle and responsive. Similar to L4D.
High values like 0.8 are slow and broad. Similar to Minecraft.
  • Expanding the Advanced section will show additional options for atypical use.

Hotkeys

On the Hotkeys page, you can set a keybind to quickly toggle Smooth Mouse Look on and off.
By default, it's set to F8 - just like in Minecraft.

Advanced

(These options all have descriptions while in-game; this screenshot just omits them for bevity.)

Generally, you should leave all of these options enabled & at their default values.
  • If your mouse sensitivity changes when you enable Smooth Mouse Look, try adjusting Inverse Turn Rate until it matches your normal (unsmoothed) mouse sensitivity.
  • Disabling InputMouseApply hook override might improve compatibility with other addons that use the mentioned hook, but it can introduce errors in your mouse input.
When disabled, it is critical that Inverse Turn Rate is set correctly (usually 45).

Lastly...

Attention Commenters! Yes, that means YOU!
Are you an impulsive brainlet currently typing up a "smooth mouse bad u rеtаrd stpuid addon" comment? Can you count your all chromosomes and brain cells on just one hand? Are you utterly incapable of performing basic tasks like reading addon descriptions?

If you answered yes to these questions, then STOP! and instead look at this very different addon I made! I promise it is very helpful and useful to apes like you!

But seriously, some of the comments here are bizarre. Very few people will actually need a tool like this, so the rest of you really have nothing else better to do.

This kind of breaks the game, even after uninstalling it the camera is floaty and after trying to reinstall it and set floatiness to 0 it still remains the same

@Gmodism Simply use an addon or external tool which inverts your mouse Y axis input
Gmodism 13 nov, 2024 @ 14:04
Huh, this is a really cool mod, if only it supported the right way to play games: inverted Y axis...

@Smokkerino That's why I told you there is no such thing within this addon itself. If you absolutely require that, you can extract the gma, modify the lua accordingly, and put it on your server. Please give credit if you do that.
Smokkerino 25 sep, 2024 @ 10:56
I was thinking more of an hardcoded lua that apply the effects and runs only in my server, but that would require to edit completely your addon.

@Smokkerino Not within this addon itself. This addon is exclusively client-side code. However, everything in this addon is controlled by (clientside) cvars, including enabling/disabling it and the various options. You could write a small addon which enforces certain values for these cvars clientside, to make it always enabled and have the same options. This is a slippery slope, however, and it's a violation of a user's right to their chosen preferences, since any changes you make to their cvars will persist and affect other servers they join, unless you are very careful about backing up their cvars and restoring them when they leave your server.

Any ways for server admins to enforce this to be always active?

good for trying to replicate the hand held camcorder look
