The History of Dyrwood

This is a summary of Dyrwoodan history prior to the beginning of the first game, according to the in-game books.

There are no spoilers here. This guide briefly covers the background lore relevant to the first game.

  • circa 0 AI - the time of Engwithian civilization.


  • circa 2200 AI - People of the Deer unite into Aedyr Kingdom.

  • 2260 AI - Aedyran animancers discover how to raise undead. Animancy is banned in Aedyr.

  • circa 2398 AI - After centuries of armed conflicts, Aedyr Kingdom unites with the elven kingdom of Kulklin. Aedyran Empire is formed.



  • 2602 AI - Aedyrans discover the territory of what is now Dyrwood. The local population (Glanfathans) are protective of the ancient Engwithan ruins and aggressive towards trespassers.

  • circa 2622 AI - Dyrford and New Dunryd are established. The colonisation is accompanied by hostilities between Dyrwoodans and Glanfathans. Dyrwoodans enslave captured Glanfathan prisoners.

  • circa 2625 - The construction of Caed Nua begins.

  • 2626 AI - An accident results in The Broken Stone War. Gref Edrang Hadred leads Dyrwoodans. Galven Regd leads Glanfathans.

  • 2631 AI - The Broken Stone War ends. Galven Regd steps down. Edrang Hadred unsuccessfully tries to end slavery. Tension between Dyrwoodans and Glanfathans remains.



  • 2652 AI - Several rebelious earls under Edrang's rule restart looting the Engwithan ruins for artifacts. This results in severe Glanfathan retaliation. Galven Regds leads Glanfathans once again. Because of his advanced age, Edrang sends his son Admeth to lead Dyrwoodans. Admeth Hadreth defeats the Glanfathans using the scorched earth tactic and captures their leader Galven Regd. These events become known as The War of the Black Trees.

  • 2654 AI - Admeth succeeds his father as the gref of Dyrwood. His rule is unpopular among the local erls. The gref seeks for increased power and it is granted to him by the fyrconyng who is preoccupied with other events at the time.

  • 2655 AI - Dyrwood becomes a palatinate, and Admeth bring the erls in line, as well as improves the local economy.

  • 2662 AI - Admeth Hadret ends the slavery in Dyrwood and releases Galven Regd. But the new leader of Glanfathans is Galven Medhra.

  • 2664 AI - Aedyran ferconyng tries to bring Dyrwood back under control, supporting opponents of Hadret's rule and sowing seeds of discord among Dyrwoodans and Glanfathans. His scheming is discovered, and Admeth prepares for the next major event.

  • 2668 AI - Admeth Hadret declares independence of Dyrwood. The War of Defiance starts.

  • 2672 AI - The War of Defiance ends with Dyrwoodan victory at the Battle of Defiance Bay, but Admeth doesn't live to see this. The new duc of independent Dyrwood is elected and rules from Baelreach, whereas New Dunryd is renamed to Defiance Bay and remains the capital.


  • 2680 AI - Iroccian calendar is introduced. It is the calendar used in this timeline.
  • 2681 AI - Academics restart studies of animancy, as it is no longer banned.

  • 2704 AI - An animancer in Baelreach accidentally shatters souls of his volunteers (The Baelreach Incident). This angers the local population that lynches him. Other animancers, fearing their safety, move to rural areas. Most of them settle in Defiance Bay, particularly in the district of Brackenbury. Further studies prove to be to expensive and risky.

  • circa 2723 AI - Durgan's Battery in the White March ends its operation under mysterious circumstances and the secret of the Durgan steel is lost.

  • 2729 AI - Brackenburry sanitarium is founded. It becomes a centre of animancy research.

  • 2737 AI - A group of animancers discover that some artifacts from Engwithan ruins bear some affinity for soul essence. Their trespassings anger the Glanfathans, and the animancers are executed. Dyrwoodan authorities ban practice of animancy near Engwithan sites.

  • 2780 AI - Some animancers are allowed to cooperate and train with Glanfathan "mind hunters" (local ciphers). This becomes a tradition that results in knowledge advancement among the two groups.



  • 2807 AI - Some Waidwen claims that he's an avatar of Eothas and overthrows Raedcaras government, then marches on Dyrwood. This becomes to be known as The Saint's War. Waidven's forces enter Dyrwood from the White March, unopposed at Cold Morn (which is why this town is held at contempt by the other Dyrwoodans). Dyrwoodan forces are lead by the new Hadret duc and Galven Medhra. The war ends within less than a year with the death of St. Waidwen from the Godhammer (bomb) at Halgot Citadel (renamed into Godhammer Citadel). The Purges (of Eothas's worshippers) start in Cold Morn and spread throughout Dyrwood in the aftermath of the war.

  • 2808 AI - Woden Teyleg (Eder's brother) dies in a battle.

  • 2809 AI - First Hollowborn (children without souls) come into the world (Waidwen's Legacy). After failed attempts to cure them with animal souls (the Salvation), upon entering puberty, they turn into wichts.

  • 2823 AI - current year.
