The Grateful Eight Guide
By Slim (And His Dome Shine)
Struggling with The Grateful 8 (or Frank The Pimp)? This relatively brief guide details everything you need to do, and what scoops and survivors to take, since the remaster doesn't have any guides.

Preparations
Before starting Frank The Pimp (Grateful Eight,) you should level yourself up to at least ~35. If you've already finished a new run and you're at a good level, you'll be fine.

The easiest way to start the playthrough is through NG+ and already having a solid level so that you don't get too screwed over. Of course, you'll want to prepare yourself mentally - the survivor AI is fixed, but that doesn't mean you can't be cautious. It still does some dumb stuff sometimes (i.e, Sophie pushing zombies away like 5 times consecutively).

This guide focuses mainly on a "broken save" - skip the scoops that aren't important by killing their survivors unless told otherwise. This is to make sure that the survivor limit doesn't screw with any cases.

This guide does not take the unlockable weapons into account, but it's recommended to use them for an easier experience.

This guide does mention specific times, but it is possible for unmarked scoops to be completely postponed by other scoops if they hit the survivor limit (this happened to me with The Cult after i left The Coward to be a lost scoop). Use fast-forwarding carefully! Don't fast forward too quickly, you'll miss Otis's calls about certain scoops.

You'll need to progress up to Case 2, Part 1, but no further. You'll get the shortcut open, but fail the case on purpose in order to keep the female survivors you have by that time with you. Progressing Case 2 will force any female survivors with you to go into the safe house, and screw up the playthrough.

Few tips:

- Make Quicksteps as soon as possible. Grab at least two of the Coffee Creamers from the safe room before you leave and mix them with Orange Juice to get Quicksteps. They're very useful and work very well with survivor escorting (which you'll be doing a lot of in this playthrough, big surprise). They can also be made with two Wines in a blender.

- Get the Small Chainsaw with three books ASAP. The Engineering and Entertainment books can be grabbed as soon as you enter the mall in Bachman's Bookporium. Head to Sir Book-A-Lot in Wonderland Plaza to grab the Criminal Biography book.

- Save often! The remaster gives you many, MANY save slots, so make separate saves for if you need to go back on any of them.

- Important items will be bolded and put at the top of the page. Their locations will be shown as well. There won't be too many.

This day's going to be pretty standard at the start. You'll play through the game as usual (Grab the Shotgun on the ground, near one of the stairways), but after you gain control of Frank in the safe room for the first time, take the two Coffee Creamers. We'll need them for Fleetfoot mixed drinks later (also called Quickstep), by combining them with Orange Juice in Colombian Roastmasters. We will also be able to combine two Milks to get a Fleetfoot mixed drink if needed (or for a skateboard-less route).

Grab the Engineering Magazine and Entertainment Magazine in Bachman's Bookporium, you'll need them for later for the Small Chainsaw.

Use skateboards for travel without any female survivors, and make it a routine to get two or three when you can. Don't get too many, we'll be getting the Skateboarding Magazine which increases their durability by 3x and lets you do sick tricks. We can use it until we get our first survivor, it saves time so that we don't need to make Quicksteps.

You can't mix Milk and Orange Juice either, that just creates Nectar (which will be important for later, but not now.)

Instead of neglecting the case, just go out and help Brad to get that part over with (and unlock Entrance Plaza). Kill Carlito immediately by using your Shotgun, since it has a high damage at the range where he is. If he runs off, just follow him. If you get the Barricade Pair scoop, kill both Aaron and Burt, and grab that free milk! You can make it into a Fleetfoot mixed drink if you want, or use it as a recovery item.

If you get the A Mother's Lament side quest, give Leah a helping hand by caving her face in with one of the nearby dumbbells, found in the gym. She's more trouble than it's worth for a female survivor, you might as well not even bother. Either that or let her die to the zombies.

If you've gotten to the Convicts fight, don't let Sophie die. Instead, after killing the Convicts or avoiding them, let her stay with you. You'll wanna keep her by your side, she's cool, but she's one of the female survivors that adds to that count!

DO NOT FORGET TO ENTER THE SECURITY ROOM AFTER MIDNIGHT!

The reason why doing this is so important is because you will unlock Queens. These make traversing the mall much easier, since throwing a Queen can kill a high amount of zombies in a wide radius... and they're useful for an unmarked scoop later on, but we'll get there later.

If you get Out of Control, kill Adam and let Greg show you the shortcut, it will be incredibly useful! You can kill him afterward. Don't forget to grab the Criminal Biography book in Sir Book-A-Lot! That book, combined with Engineering and Entertainment, makes the Small Chainsaws nigh-invincible.

You will have to kill Shinji and Yuu, the two Japanese tourists (Lost in Translation), along with David Bailey (Shadow Of The North Plaza). This is due to them not being who we're looking for (female survivors).
Afterward, wait for Case 2. You can head up to the rooftop with Sophie, but let her get far away from you so she doesn't come in the safe room early.

MAKE A SAVE HERE. YOU WILL NEED IT.

This is where the bulk of your run time is going to come in. We're going to be rescuing Heather and Pamela Tompkins, along with everybody that Jo has kidnapped.

If you're waiting for other scoops, wait either in the Wonderland Plaza or Paradise Plaza depending on their location. Otis will call you when they're available.

The unmarked scoop Twin Sisters doesn't start until 9 A.M. Kill everyone in the scoops before that to prevent the survivor limit from screwing you over.

Above The Law starts at 12 P.M. After you get that scoop, kill Jo as soon as possible before she can kill any of the female survivors!

After you rescue all of them, this should be your list:

  • Heather Tompkins
  • Pamela Tompkins
  • Kay Nelson
  • Lilly Deacon
  • Kelly Carpenter
  • Janet Star
  • Sophie
  • Jennifer Gorman

This is the eight survivors you need for the challenge. As soon as you get Jennifer, congratulations! The challenge is completed, and you get a snazzy outfit for your efforts. Don't forget to save, because if you don't, the challenge doesn't count.
Extra Stuff
And that's it! Congrats, you've completed Frank The Pimp/The Grateful Eight in the most time conserving way possible. Again, don't forget to save - the challenge doesn't count otherwise, for some reason.

This site is where I got the specific times for each scoop and the specific survivors for each scoop as well! This is also where I got the majority of my information about weapon and item locations. While most of their information was on the original game, it all applies here as well.

Well I only have 5 left with the 53,594 zombies, pp, and infinity mode left so I’m not super worried

I wish you luck on your journey to platinum-ing this game! It has a more balanced difficulty than the original, but it can still be pretty difficult to get used to at times.

God dammit I’m trying to platinum this game on PlayStation and I’m annoyed since I have to play through the game while also keeping Sophie safe since I ignored her the first time and just let her die since I thought I already knew a way to get this but that was to hard

She is, she's the survivor that spawns along with the prisoners during their fight if I recall.
Madeline 4 Apr @ 8:19pm
Wait a minute Sophie isn’t the survivor that spawns when the prisoners first spawn is she?

Haha I knew the achievement was called frank the pimp in the original, thought I was imagining things. Thanks for writing everything out like this, helped me out a bunch! I forgot about mechanics like the mall only spawning x survivors so you need to kill of the ones you don't need etc. I remember hating this achievement but you made it a breeze so, take my points!

I did the Hatchet Man, killing Rich and Josh and sparing Barbara, and got the achievement when I saved Jo's hostages. Barbara's probably a lot more useful than Jennifer, seeing as she can actually use a shotgun.
