although i have found a solution, it is much simpler than all of this garbage. and it works on windows 10.
firstly, all you have to do is go to the control panel -> programs -> uninstall a program. now on the side of that there will be a selection called "turn windows features on or off", click on that one.
then navigate down that list to "media features" and expand that and check the box beside "windows media player".
now, all you have to do is press the windows button and type "default" and default apps should appear, now change the default media player to windows media player and....
