Note
The newest update has changed the nature of the "morph toxic" and "black contract" items to be one time use. Everything else in the guide stands as of time of writing.
"Method" 1: Full Odds
Any encounter in the game has a base 1/777 chance of being a rare. This does include starters and legendaries so if you like full odds hunting go nuts!

Tip 1: Make sure you turn off auto-saves if you are hunting a starter or legendary. Turning off auto-saves is also best for the next method in this guide.
Tip 2: You already have a rare! Your house cat Dokimon Whispurr is pre-programmed to be rare!
Method 2: Morph Toxic (Part I: How to obtain)
First and foremost you will need to get to Xelos City circled here. (Masterfully in MS paint. Graphic design is my passion!)

Next you will want to make your way to the north-most part of the city and a bit to the right until you find the building with the sign "Blu-Ray DVD Collectible" pictured below.

Then you'll want to go all the way to the back (past 2 inside doors) until you get to this PC.

Lastly you will need to buy the Morph Toxic for $10,000 thankfully you can get an unlimited number of rares with just one!

Bonus tip: This shop has a lot of neat items that go outside the scope of this guide, but they are worth taking a look into. If you are serious about rare hunting I'd also pick up a couple "Midnight Captal" from this shop (think "Master Ball" from Pokemon) because you never know when you'll stumble upon an unexpected rare (the best kind)!
Method 2: Morph Toxic (Part II: How to use)
The Morph Toxic can turn any Dokimon into a rare guaranteed! But you can't just go applying it on anything right away and there are a couple mild, albeit temporary drawbacks. The first drawback is the Dokimon will lose 5 levels, and the second is the Dokimon's AP will drop somewhat. That's it, both are fully recoverable with battling and leveling as normal!

To use Morph Toxic first you need to get your Dokimon to have max affection points AP's. You can view the APs of any Dokimon from the third page of the stats screen. All six stats MUST have 50 AP's down the board!

Example of a Dokimon NOT ready for Morph Toxic:
Even though this mon has 50 APs for Magic Attack it does not have 50 APs in all stats!

Example of a Dokimon that IS ready for Morph Toxic:
Here you can see all AP's are at 50. This means you can use the Morph Toxic item on it and it will become rare!
Important Notes for Rare Hunting
Did you know here are 7 types of rares for every single Dokimon? They are all equally likely to get and are determined after rareness is determined so if you find a wild one they are all equally special/unique but more importantly if you are using a Morph Toxic you can save before using it and get any of the 7 colors you would like! (REMEMBER TO TURN OFF AUTO-SAVES WHEN RE-ROLLING!) Also although equally rare there is one "special" kind of rare that has more variation in color than the others, this again is just cosmetic however and not any less likely.

Lastly although many of the details of this mechanic are outside the scope of this guide there are special captured/shadow mons that also have a unique color and sparkle like rares although they do behave somewhat differently as well. To obtain these simply use the Black Contract (found in the story and also the same shop in the guide) unlike the morph toxin as of now no conditions are needed to apply it! But the drawbacks are somewhat unknown but what is so far known is you lock the affection of the monster to zero permanently (or until restored) and can not evolve the mon until restored.

Below is all sprite variations of Deathscye including all 7 rares, shadow, and standard.
Tip for Raising APs
APs are simply earned through winning battles with your Dokimon or through berries. For battling I would recommend using a strong Dokimon to carry a weaker one in a double battles. Conveniently just south of Xelos City is this guy who you can repeatably double battle with. I recommend a strong ghost type attacker for getting consistent one hit knock outs.

The guy who double battles you:
Thanks!
Special thanks to the community of people at the Yanako RPGs discord server for teaching me and helping me understand all this info! I'm enjoying doing all this stuff and thought it would be nice to have it all in one place and available on Steam.

Has someone confirmed when you would see if the starters is rare??

i would assume it would not show in the OW but i do hope it at least shows when picking.

I've not done it personally, but I believe after choosing in the stats screen.

When do we see that the starter have alternate colors? In their OW sprite, before we select them, or after we choose them?

You will need to do multiple rematches, he's just convenient since he does double battles allowing you to have a strong monster carry a weaker one.

do that guy give all the AP stats or sum of them?
