TL:DR
  • Moving Left = higher speed and less acceleration.
  • Moving Right = lower speed and more acceleration.
  • Set the Default Gear Ratio (it is highest speed + acceleration combo).
  • keep Final as it is, adjust each gear by moving it to the right to gain more acceleration which is needed in races.
  • move 6/5TH gear to the right and lose about 10km/h in speed.
  • move 4/3RD gear to the right and lose about 5km/h in speed
  • move 2/1ST gear to the right and lose about 3km/h in speed.
  • keep doing the above adjustment until you are satisfied with the accelearion.
Understanding Gear Ratios
I. Understanding Gear Ratios
  • Gear Ratio Number (e.g., 2.626, 0.767): Indicates how many times the engine turns for each wheel rotation in that gear.
    • Higher Ratio (e.g., 2.626 in 1st gear):
      • Engine turns more for each wheel rotation.
      • Stronger acceleration.
      • Lower top speed in that gear.
      • Good for starting and accelerating from low speeds.
    • Lower Ratio (e.g., 0.767 in 6th gear):
      • Engine turns less for each wheel rotation.
      • Weaker acceleration.
      • Higher top speed in that gear.
      • Good for cruising at high speeds.
Understanding the "Speed" Number (e.g., "75 km/h" for 1st gear)
This is likely the maximum speed you can reach in that specific gear.
  • It's the speed where the engine is at its limit (redline) or where shifting to the next gear is more efficient for further acceleration.
The "FINAL" Ratio (e.g., "4.385" slider)
  • Master Gear Adjustment: The "FINAL" ratio affects all gears (1st to 6th) equally.
  • Increasing "FINAL" Ratio (towards MAX, higher number):
    • Makes all* gears shorter.
    • Increases acceleration in all gears.
    • Reduces top speed in all gears and overall.
    • Engine revs higher at the same speed.
  • Decreasing "FINAL" Ratio (towards MIN, lower number):
    • Makes all* gears longer.
    • Decreases acceleration in all gears.
    • Increases top speed in all gears and overall.
    • Engine revs lower at the same speed.
Troubleshooting & Tuning
  • Problem: 6th gear takes too long to reach max speed.
    • Solution: Increase "FINAL" Ratio (or, if possible, increase 6th gear ratio directly).
    • Trade-off: Slightly reduces overall top speed (or top speed in 6th gear specifically).
  • Problem: Need more acceleration in all gears.
    • Solution: Increase "FINAL" Ratio.
    • Trade-off: Reduces overall top speed.
  • Problem: Want higher top speed overall.
    • Solution: Decrease "FINAL" Ratio.
    • Trade-off: Reduces acceleration in all gears.
  • Problem: Gears feel too short, hitting rev limiter too quickly.
    • Solution: Decrease "FINAL" Ratio (or, if possible, decrease ratios of lower gears).
    • Trade-off: May reduce acceleration.
  • Problem: Gears feel too long, sluggish acceleration.
    • Solution: Increase "FINAL" Ratio (or, if possible, increase ratios of lower gears).
    • Trade-off: May reduce top speed.
Key Takeaways for Optimal Settings
  • Track Dependent: The "optimal" setting is not universal. It depends heavily on the track layout (corners vs. straights).
  • Experiment! The best way to find the right setting is to test and feel how the car performs.
  • Small Adjustments: Make small changes to the sliders and test. Don't make drastic changes all at once.
  • Balance: Gear tuning is about finding the right balance between acceleration and top speed for your car and the track.
  • No Single "Perfect" Setting: It's about finding what works best for you and the specific conditions.

Hey Sato.

Bit of a long shot but would it be possible to have a call with you even if its through steam?

I know this might seem weird but i am only really able to retain something by talking with people

Mind you i know this might sound weird so no worries if u don't feel comfortable but i would appreciate it i have a lot of people i know online but none of them understand cars so i would be happy if you could help with that.

lastly this is for better understanding not passing the game as i already did that long ago and i just like the idea of min maxing all cars

Thank you

Im going to send u a friend request

its a highway, not a race track. you want to start races mid rpm in 1st gear. if you start in 2nd, you have a wasted gear since crashing to 0 mph means a loss anyway. my base car with stage 1 trans was a rocket compared to the competitors after adjusting 1st gear to 100 kph and each gear adding about 20kph onto it, with a really short rpm drop per gear. as car got faster, 1st gear was taken up to about 140kph or 100mph also with a long 2nd gear so i had more gears to work with at battle speeds. trans tuning is as important as horsepower in this game

While the solution isn't perfect, it should allow you to have a relative brain dead way of getting close gear ratios with little effort. I recommend tuning the gears in metric (kph) since the intervals are finer with the final ratio all the way to the right, and once fully adjusted, you slide until you get the desired max speed.

The formula is first gear all the way to the left, with last gear dependent on where the max speed hit. My preference is 1.000 ratio at the start. You can adjust with the rest of the gears from the speed of last gear minus the speed of first gear divide by the amount of gears minus 1 [(last - first)/(x - 1) where x is amount of gears]. You then add the speed value to every gear starting from the first one.

There's also RPM based tuning which is more accurate, but it's a lot more tedious and time consuming.

I run my first gear as long (to the left) as possible, you start races at about 60kph so setting it for 80-100kph in 1st means you're in the powerband as soon as the race starts.

i think a good tip applicable to most situations is to check your average speed while racing, rarely are you at your top speed

@Doug_Skinwalker plus its good to actually understand what you're doing

@Sparklebits Honestly running AT is basically handicapping yourself. Even in the cars that only came in automatics/CVTs IRL like the Levorgs.

vvv FYI real-world terminology greatly applies in this game and has been since the series' earliest titles.

Not helpful. Don't use fancy real world terminology, this ain't forza or gran tourismo just explain it with terms relating to the game. The sliders only go left and right, the numbers on the left are irrelevant, only the number on the right KMH actually mean something.
