LSD TYPE: (1-Way, 1.5-Way, 2-Way)
  • 1-Way LSD:
    • Effect: Engages mainly on acceleration . Minimal effect on deceleration.
    • Handling: Improves acceleration traction. May slightly increase understeer on corner entry (less deceleration effect).
    • Use for: Prioritizing acceleration out of corners, simpler setup.
  • 1.5-Way LSD:
    • Effect: Engages on acceleration (stronger) and deceleration (weaker) . Balanced effect.
    • Handling: Good balance of acceleration traction and corner entry stability. Often a good all-around choice.
    • Use for: General track driving, balanced handling, good compromise.
  • 2-Way LSD:
    • Effect: Engages on acceleration (strong) and deceleration (strong) . Strongest locking effect in both situations.
    • Handling: Maximum traction and stability. Can increase understeer on corner entry. Potentially oversteer on corner exit if too aggressive.
    • Use for: Maximum stability, powerful cars, experienced drivers, tracks needing strong braking and acceleration traction.
INITIAL TORQUE: (Mild to Strong)
  • MILD (Lower Value):
    • Effect: Less pre-load. LSD less engaged initially.
    • Handling: More nimble corner entry, potentially less understeer on entry. Can be less stable overall.
    • Use for: Agile handling, reducing corner entry understeer, dry conditions.
  • STRONG (Higher Value):
    • Effect: More pre-load. LSD more engaged from the start.
    • Handling: More stable, increased traction under braking and initial acceleration. Can increase understeer on corner entry.
    • Use for: Increased stability, maximizing initial traction, slippery conditions, powerful cars.
LSD RATIO: (Mild to Strong)
  • MILD (Lower Value):
    • Effect: Less aggressive locking when wheel slip occurs.
    • Handling: Smoother, more predictable handling. Less risk of snap oversteer. More forgiving. May allow more wheelspin before LSD engages fully.
    • Use for: Predictable handling, smoother driving, less experienced drivers, cars prone to oversteer.
  • STRONG (Higher Value):
    • Effect: More aggressive locking when wheel slip occurs.
    • Handling: Maximum traction, aggressive corner exit traction. Can be less forgiving, potential for snap oversteer if throttle is abrupt. Can increase understeer.
    • Use for: Maximum traction, aggressive driving, experienced drivers, maximizing corner exit speed, powerful cars needing to control wheelspin.
Quick Tuning Guide - Based on Handling Issues (FR Car)
  • Problem: Understeer on Corner Entry:
    • Try: Decrease INITIAL TORQUE (towards MILD).
    • Consider: 1-Way or 1.5-Way LSD TYPE.
  • Problem: Oversteer on Corner Exit (Snap Oversteer):
    • Try: Decrease LSD RATIO (towards MILD).
    • Consider: 1-Way or 1.5-Way LSD TYPE.
  • Problem: Wheelspin on Corner Exit (Lack of Traction):
    • Try: Increase LSD RATIO (towards STRONG).
    • Consider: 1.5-Way or 2-Way LSD TYPE.
  • Problem: Car feels unstable under braking/deceleration:
    • Try: Increase INITIAL TORQUE (towards STRONG).
    • Consider: 1.5-Way or 2-Way LSD TYPE.
Key Takeaways for LSD Tuning
  • Experiment! No single "best" setting. Track and driving style matter.
  • Small Adjustments: Make small changes and test.
  • Focus on Specific Issues: Tune LSD to address specific handling problems (understeer, oversteer, traction).
  • Balance: LSD is part of the overall car setup. Consider it with gear ratios, suspension, etc.
  • Driver Preference: What feels best and fastest for you is most important!

Personal sweet spot is going 1.5 Way, mild Initial Torque, strong ratio, and mitigating any oversteer on the brakes with strong fwd bias to taste. Thanks to this guide for making sense of a rather confusing and off-putting localisation.

The "ways" referred to by 1, 1.5 and 2 are Acceleration and Deceleration, and refer to the state in which the differential will lock. A 1 way will only lock while the car is accelerating. A 1.5 way will add in a weaker effect while the car is decelerating. A 2 way will function in the same way during both states.

Initial Torque is a passive locking force applied to the differential that makes it more difficult for the wheels (left and right) to turn at different speeds even before the active locking action is activated. A lower value will loosen the car up but also trigger the differential to lock more easily. A higher value will make the car feel tighter but also prevent abrupt/unpredictable locking when throttle inputs are rougher/less precise.

LSD Ratio refers to how much the wheels (left and right) will be allowed to spin at different speeds before the differential begins to lock. The highest possible value would be similar to having a solid rear axle.

The comments have really opened my eyes on how surface left some people's car knowledge is. Car knowledge translates into car games and comments like Crockmuth's "LSD makes the speed number go down (RED=BAD) so I don't use it. You don't need steering in a game about going in a straight line, just make the number go up (GREEN=GOOD). Everything else is snake oil." really show how little people understand certain car components and what they do. I really appreciate this guide, though. As someone in the U.S. going to a place called NASCAR Tech, who has learned how to tear apart and rebuild at least 4 different styles of LSDs, this guide is very accurate in the game as well as real life. Someone could take this guide and make genuine decisions on what style differential to get for their vehicle, as well as tuning their differential based off of the foundation of knowledge provided. You have earned respect from me and many others, Sato.

Can I get this dumbed down even harder? "1", "1.5" and "2", "Initial Torque" , "LSD Ratio" make no sense when no longer in a vaccum. I have no context for what it's referring to.

there are,,,, turns in this game??? guh???

LSD makes the speed number go down (RED=BAD) so I don't use it. You don't need steering in a game about going in a straight line, just make the number go up (GREEN=GOOD). Everything else is snake oil.
