How to fix the game crashing to desktop/blackscreen crash.
There's guides on here already that talk you through how to download a hex-editor and downpatch your game, but there's actually a much simpler way to get the game working.

If you're crashing to desktop or getting a black screen before the game closes, there are two options:

  • First, if you're on Nvidia, open the Nvidia control panel and turn off any scaling in the game's settings tab.

If that hasn't worked, simply go to this link HERE [www.nexusmods.com] and download the .exe file.

  • Use 7zip or Winrar to extract the .exe file to a location of your choice. I chose Desktop for convenience.

  • Rename the .exe file from "DevilMayCry4SpecialEdition (Fixer).exe.xd" to "DevilMayCry4SpecialEdition.exe" remove quotations.

You may need to enable file name extensions in your windows settings if it doesn't let you remove the xd at the end. Windows will warn you about changing file name extensions, say yes.

If you did it right, it should look like this.

  • Go to your games installation directory, usually c://program files (x86)/steam/steamapps/common/DevilMayCry4SpecialEdition OR you can right click the game, properties, and browse local files/installation directory.

and drag the new .exe file you renamed into the games directory. When it asks if you want to replace the .exe file, say yes.

If you cannot find DevilMayCry4SpecialEdition, it may just be called Special Edition for you like it is for me.

  • Boot up the game, and it should work for you now.

Credit goes to Ikari6002 who put this .exe up on the Nexus recently.

Please leave them an Endorsement if you downloaded the .exe and it worked for you :)
