Definitely! Battleships are designed purely for large gauge artillery shells. Their cannons are large and can load HE for shore bombardment, and AP for anti ship engagement. Heavy cruisers typically have a smaller armament, anywhere from 305 to 157mm guns, and are good for moderate combat and escorting Carriers, Battleships, etc. Light Cruisers can mount heavier weapons, but typically go for a small-medium caliber gun such as a 203mm. They also typically mount the most Anti Aircraft armament, along with the Heavy Cruisers. These are fast ships that can lead Destroyer flotillas or engage in Anti-Submarine engagements. Destroyers are fast screening ships that are useful as anti-submarine vessels, torpedo carriers for anti-capital ship engagements, or as raiders against commerce and military fleets, such as fleet oilers and transport ships.
