How exactly is a dating show supposed to instill fear into people? Or how is it supposed to torture the protagonist?

I somewhat like the game, but it's pretty thinly plotted, like the title said, it never elaborate on why'd a dating game show would make people fear...whatever organization the villain is from, and why even bother to make a dating show?
